    Hi Glade. I approach my feed management here in Denver a bit differently, though our seasons are similar. First, I’m prioritizing avoiding honey bound hives in April, when the queen can’t find places to lay. That can really put a hive back. I want my bees in Feb and March to be eating their stores - I don’t want heavy top deeps two months from now. I only put food on if the hive is light - looks like you put it on all hives. That has led to honey bound issues for me. I know my bees well and I know my spring nectar bloom, so I can judge by weight alone if I need to feed the occasional hive in Feb or March.

    That’s awesome. A lot of people down here in the valley have lost all their hives. I’ll be checking mine tomorrow

    Glade how much does it cost you round trip to go to the expo? Thanks I like a few hours from you in utah

    • @utahbeeman
      @utahbeeman วันที่ผ่านมา

      Our flights were a bit more this year because we spent a couple of days in Florida before the conference, but I think they would have been around $750/person. We also flew out of our small regional airport which costs more, but otherwise we would have to drive to SLC. Hotel is around $170/night. We have rented a car, but the hotels have shuttles that will take you to nearby locations/airport/restaurants/Expo Center (which we walked to/from a couple of times). I think if you planned it right you could get by without a car. Plus Expo tickets, food and anything you buy at the conference (getting your purchases home is the challenge).

    Glade, do you find the bees chew on the pink foam board? This is my first winter using it and I'm using canvas as a barrier between the bees and foam board, but the canvas soaks up moisture and likes to mold. I'd like to get rid of it, but worry about the bees chewing on the insulation. Thanks!

    • @utahbeeman
      @utahbeeman วันที่ผ่านมา

      That has been a concern of mine as well. Thus far, they don't seem to be chewing on it. I've tried regular white styrofoam and they will chew on that. I see Etienne Tardif using what looks like a tape around his pink foam boards. If it becomes an issue then I'll probably try whatever he's using to wrap the foam boards. Moisture doesn't seem to be an issue with my setup. I think the added top insulation is keeping the lid warm enough that the condensation is happening on the side walls which isn't an issue and gives the bees water, which they do need even in winter.

    • @TheHobbyShooter
      @TheHobbyShooter วันที่ผ่านมา

      @utahbeeman Thanks! I noticed Ettiene does that too. I haven't asked him, but I'm pretty sure he's using Tuck Tape brand house wrap tape. On a different note, I see you're speaking at the UBA annual convention. I'm looking forward to that!

    Hi Glade. Thank you for sharing. Jason is right that smell is just amazing, you almost can't describe that smell of a healthy hive. For me it's a hard choice the smell vs the buzz. I don't know when you open that lid and you are in that moment and experience the harmony of a healthy hive. I'm not sure we can fully describe that moment to people that don't or haven't experienced it. It's Joy...

      They are just 60w bulbs (that's all I had). I figured I'd have to go to 75w but it seems just fine with these. I thought about using reptile heat bulbs but this is working great.

    Thank you for your video. I am a beekeeper in Iceland and I do not use top ventilation on my insulated horizontal hives (Lazutin hives). I use 6 inches of insulation at the top and don't put any sugar on top of the frames. In the spring, I am always surprised to see how little honey the bees have consumed.

    Hi from southern New Zealand 👋😃 Don't panic, I think you're seeing a climb in phoretic mites ( mites on the bee's ) because your formic has slowed brood production, nows absolutely a great time to use oxalic acid vapour and really slam them down, it can be quite frightening when you see massive mite counts after a treatment, just hitting them again that's the key and you'll get a great result I'm sure because most of the mites are currently hanging out on your bee's. Looks like you got it started as soon as you could and you'll definitely get a good knock down 👍😃 Ian steppler Canadian beekeeper had a similar issue and he's now pulling zero counts so hang in there👍😃

      @utahbeeman 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    HA ENJOYED YOUR VIDEO, I HAVE TO MOVE HIVES THE SAME WAY I PUT MINE IN A TRAILER I AM 65 A WOMAN IT IS JUST SO VERY HARD I TRYED A DIFFERENT WAY THIS YEAR I HAD TO MOVE SOME BECAUSE WHERE I KEPT MY BEES THE LADY DIED. SO WHAT I DID WAS USE THE NUC BOXES TORE THE HIVES DOWN AND PUT THEM IN AS MANY NUC BOXES I NEEDED AND MOVED THEM AND PUT THEM BACK TOGETHER. AT THERE NEW LOCATION I LEFT A BOX TO CATCH ANY STRAY BEES WHEN IT GOT EVENING I WENT BACK AND GOT THEM AND TOOK THEM TO THERE NEW PLACE. I TELL YOU IT WAS JUST SO MUCH EASIER TO DO IT THIS WAY.
