Lots of stuff about Dungeons and Dragons - classic Module Reviews, including updates for 5E use, as well as setting product reviews. There is a "Guide for new DM's" channel, as well as some of our recorded sessions. I will be adding content regularly and hope that you find my videos informative and entertaining!

มุมมอง 229 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Thanks again for joining us - this video gets into some quick facts about the Abyss, and describes a few of the layers. We will chat about adventure considerations at the end, and I'll suggest a good resource if you want to dive deeper.
Reading the 2024 DMG - Ch6 part 3 - Planar Adventuring
มุมมอง 99 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
this is a (WAY TOO SHORT) section in the DMG that gives a new DM a few ideas for adventures in the multiverse, including a table that shows some examples of what adventure situations/conflicts can look like on an extraplanar level. I do have some comments at the end, but I did find this section...underwhelming.
Reading the 2024 DMG - Ch6 part 2 - Planar Travel
มุมมอง 199 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Quick section and quick video discussing "how" to move your players around the multiverse. Simple explanations of portals and vortices as well as a short section discussing "planar conduits" (Yggdrasil, Styx, etc.) Good section!
Reading the 2024 DMG - Ch6 part 1 - The Planes
มุมมอง 219 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
welcome back for another chapter! Chapter 6 takes us into the "cosmic wheel" and other concepts for extraplanar play. The terms here help a DM expand their game from a "world" into a "multiverse". Good introduction to the concepts, and a few ideas to make your own.
Reading the 2024 DMG - Greyhawk - additional resources
มุมมอง 7212 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
I am using this video to provide a bit of commentary about using Greyhawk as a setting, as well as presenting other resources from the D&D library that can be referenced to expand upon the setting. The 2024 book gives us an excellent starting point for using the setting, but also requires a TON of work for a DM to flesh out. The resources we talk about here CAN provide content to help you flesh...

I think that potential confusion about the orbs is why WoTC left out any mention of them in the Carceri section. That way, DMs who are new to Carceri who read that can just make each of the layers be one singular expanse instead of a string of giant evil pearls nested in each other. Also you didn't mention it, but that art in the Carceri section is pretty cool imo. The party is standing right above a gigantic eldritch horror in what I'm assuming is Agathys, and the entity is just looking up at them like "Sup, mind if you let me out of this ice? I totally won't make you regret it."
Thanks for the comment! yeah fair point about the confusion, and honestly 90% of DM's will never use the outer planes, but I want to include some interesting stuff for those that do feel inspired to head off-world
This DMG is very much geared to fans of Critical Role IMHO.
if you're a veteran DM, there's not a ton here that's new or different. I think this DMG was written for any potential DM to understand, no matter what their point of entry was. Thanks for your time and I hope you enjoy the series!
I incorporated this adventure and the expedition to the ruins of Greyhawk in the same campaign to huge success. Good video, good adventure.
What do you think of using the demonic possession curse from Chapter 3 in the Abyss? How likely should that be to happen to a PC while exploring the plane, or is that something to avoid doing since it runs the risk of compromising player agency?
I think it should be discussed with the players as part of a session zero (or prior to the entry into the Abyss). As with most detailed things, the mileage "will vary" depending on the group and the skill of the DM. But the rules in Ch3 aren't especially onerous; it takes a 1 rolled on a d20 test to trigger the save that leads to the possession, which is repeated at the end of each turn. Unless a DM is using this on a party that shouldn't be there to begin with, most PC's will end the temporary effects pretty quickly. Add to the Long Rest save that can remove the possession entirely, I think the chapter 3 rules are a good place to start, and a safe way to fiddle with the mechanics
To play archdevil's advocate, I think the table could be used as a jumping off point if the DM wants to have a planar adventure, but is struggling to figure out which idea they want to go with, so they let the dice decide the initial premise and work out the campaign from that random decision. This could especially be useful if they decide to do something in the Upper Planes, since people might have a harder time thinking for adventure hooks there than in the Lower Planes, where the hooks just fall off trees.
Very good and valid point - many folks find it easy to populate the lower planes with threats, but conflicts in the heavens can be a problem - thanks for your imput!
i really like this and thank you so much doing this for us
I'm glad you are enjoying the series! Thank you so much for your kind words, and I appreciate your time and support
They mentioned dark sun? That’s a surprise.
Yeah, I think they are being very conscious about the classic stuff with the 50th anniversary - that's my guess anyway...
Wow, this is a great idea. Thank you for doing this! I have the new DMG but this is great to experience it this way
Thank you so much for your time and I really appreciate the support! I am glad that you are getting something out of the series.
Critical Fumbles in 5e for attack rolls are bad game design, period. A level 1 character who only attacks once or twice is less likely to have a critical fumble compared to a 15th level character who attacks many more times. As you get more experienced, the more likely you are to have a critical failure? I still don't understand people who like this house rule. Make it make sense.
I agree, and I think the book talks about that as well - there will be so many 1's rolled over the course of a campaign. Personally, I find that there is no "objective" way to adjudicate "fumbles", so I don't use crit fails either...Thanks for your time and comment!
Cheers for this, some good advice in here
If you strip out most of the D&D flavoured overlay (the silly monsters, the global zoo of player races etc) then there is some useful generic advice in this. The monster behaviour tables, for example, are good for solo play or random encounters. It goes off the rails when it turns into a miniatures wargame, but some of the earlier role-playing content isn't bad.
I got the dmg myself, but I appreciate getting to listen to it audiobook style plus your commentary
thank you for your time and comments! I am glad that you are getting something out of it and I hope you stay with the series!
Read The Fine Manual … lol
The fact that they removed the section on customizing villains is one of the strangest changes of this book for me. I'm not entirely sure why it was removed since, in my opinion, creating a memorable villain for your campaign is arguably one of the best parts of DND
some sections of the Toolbox have definitely been lacking, but I try to remember that they are going details-light to help a newer DM. I think some of the details for villains, major NPC's and adventure hooks are covered in more detail in chapters 4 and 5. Thanks for your time, and I appreciate the feedback!
@dmgeezerjim4010 a friend of mine pointed out the villain building section it really isn't that necessary since that's actually the easiest part to make. I struggle with building dungeons so I am more partial to the dungeon building chapter in the 2014 dmg. But you are welcome! I have been slightly obsessively comparing my dmg's and I have come to the conclusion that I'm going to keep them both and just staple the best bits together. The 2024 DMG undoubtedly has the best section on the different planes of existence. As a huge planescape fan that is huge to me
@@roarshach13 yeah I'm a huge planescape (2e) fan as well - I want to get around to finishing my planescape series now that the setting has more "fans" among modern D&D players.
This is great, very helpful!! I'm so interested in getting into DM stuff but I'm always so unsure of what to do 😭Thank you so much for this!!! 💛💛
Thank you for joining us on this project! I hope the series is helpful to you. Feel free to ask questions in comments as we go along as well - happy to help! I appreciate your time
I get the book later this month so this was great to find!
thanks for the comment! I will be doing this for the whole book (for better or worse lol) - I hope you are able to gain something from the series!
Ya, he's back. Glad to see you on TH-cam again. Putting this on my watch list!
thanks for being here - yeah getting back into a youtube cycle, great time to do it!
amazing video but the voice is very low. hard to hear.
Fun video! I’m just getting into dnd and am really fascinated by the planescape setting. Thanks for taking the time to cover some highlights from this book! I think I’ll have to pick up a copy!
plan to do the great modron march by chance?
Thanks for this.
X4 and x5 are not set in Ylaruam.
I went through this with a split class fighter/assassin/magic user and devastated the monsters. The rest of the party died and they actually let me go as I was Lawful Evil and they told me "you will be back when you die".
It should be miserable being in extreme cold, the party must be prepared for the weather.
I recently used the Allip for a very cool encounter in a deserted temple. My unfortunate players character went mad scribbling away for hours on end. And then, decided to keep the scroll she had written the secret on. The entire party, including her, refuse to read the scroll. What would you do in that situation out of curiosity as it'll be a week or two before we get back to that session? TIA
Thanks for the reply, and I hope you enjoyed the video. I hate to answer a question with a question, but it might help us work out a good direction. First - do you intend for the "Secret" that the Allip was cursed with to carry into your story, or is it something that manifested into a "bigger than intended" gameplay moment? Second, how much continued access does the Allip have to the afflicted character - or was the Allip slain in the encounter. If the former, you can keep the Allip haunting the first character, then move to a second PC - ideally an INT based character. If the latter, then there shouldn't be much danger from the scroll, unless you want to turn the next player into an Allip as a plot point (gradual shifting of form and sanity).
G1, G2, and G3...The best!
Great video! There's a noticeable lack of videos like these about 3/3.5e modules and your way of going through them is both thorough and engaging! I've noticed you've been away from TH-cam for several months now, and I really hope you'll make more videos like these at some point.
"Die Vecna die" is just German for "The Vecna the".
One thing I'd point out In terms of converting D3 to 5E: the encounter with the Succubus and Vampire is far more brutal in old AD&D since both opponents drained character levels back in the day. Which in turn left characters even more vulnerable to the rest of the module. In 5E as a DM you might even want to beef up the pair in this encounter, depending on the makeup of your player party.
I was going to say the same. Vampires used to be feared in 1st Edition and a single vampire could ruin a party’s evening quickly
Excellent video. This is a subject very near and dear to me. I've been diving into the GDQ modules for years now and you have touched on a lot of excellent topics. Respectfully, I think the rabbit hole goes much deeper but I assume you were limited by time for the video. If you ever have the time to discuss the G or D series modules further I would love to speak with you.
cool
I wanted a review of the module not how to convert it to 5th edition
5 minutes into the ad&d bashing and I quit watching.
Your audio was very quiet in this video
Thank you for making this video! The only thing I ask is to turn up your mic volume some, had a hard time hearing. But thank you for making this and I’m hoping to try and run a 5e version of this
Love the tactical breakdown good video!
Thank you for the feedback! Hoping to get back to my video series soon, and I appreciate your time
Heck ya, love these in depth reviews.
I love the idea of a "living gate" - in tradegate obviously a trader. I envision him putting daily usages of the portal for auction or something.
Sigil...Hard G! They'll lock you up for that.
Great review. Gonna run this using Castles & Crusades soon hopefully. My group tends to roleplay instead of rollplay non-combat situations so should be good. Hopefully Drivethru puts a POD at some point as I wanna get my hands on this.
Thank you so much for your comment, and I appreciate your time! L1 and L2 are excellent modules, and very easy to translate to many different RPG systems.
Great review! Enjoyed listening to the walkthrough, thank you for approaching this module through the lens of 5e, as that is how I'm planning to use it. In my campaign, the storyline takes place 50 or so years after heroes of the past have put the gems at the altars. The largest city, Tebakar, has become the Las Vegas of Faerun. This guide is helping me fill in the gaps of how the quest should go for this arc, so the plan is now that the Cult of Set is disrupting trade between Durpar and the Tebakar and beyond, and is planning to steal the star gems for their own selfish reasons, and the pcs have to figure out how to stop it. Unrelated but fun fact: My version of the desert is inspired by the idea of the Imaksar artificers once being the most advanced civilization. The desert is riddled with large, strange ruins made from metal or temples made from alien material. Tebakar has attracted many artificers and wizards from surrounding country to scavenge these ruins for ancient technology and build a community of invention and advancement. It's essentially high fantasy Hollywood exotic desert meets mad max/post apocalyptic. Also a little bit of big hero 6 thrown in there. I cannot resist mixing genres together.
Thanks for your comment and I'm glad you enjoyed the video! your idea sounds awesome - the greatness of D&D and RPG's as a whole is making them what WE need them to be!
Shut up and take my subscription! Jokes aside, in my planescape / rod of seven parts campaign, my players will head to fortitude and arcadia next. Excellent video, nice voice to listen to, my humble thanks.
Thank you so much for your time and comment - been a bit busy but I 100% plan on finishing the series (and much more content) soon. Thanks for your support and I hope you enjoy more of my videos!
Hi it's GiftOfGabby1 from stream I was looking for mystara and found you lol
Hi Gabby! thanks for joining me over on TH-cam as well. I hope you like the video - I have to admit it, my GAZ series were some of my earlier work, and were a bit challenging LOL. I still have another 7 Gazetteers for Mystara to go, I need to get back to work!
Could you make a video about the false hydra? It’s such a cool monster and has such great role play potential!
Thanks for your comment - unfortunately the False Hydra still isn't a 5th edition official monster. I am a fan of the creature, but I am trying to stick to "stat blocked" creatures for this series. The Balhannoth has a "similar" effect, but nowhere near the potency.
I did a 5e conversion guide of this adventure with digital maps. You are not kidding about building maps for this adventure. Many 1st edition dungeons were HUGE! Thank you for the review of this classic module.
So glad you decided to review the Peryton! They’re one of my favorite monstrosities!
Thanks for your time, and thanks for the idea! so many many monsters out there, its good to get some direction. I hope I did the monster right by you...

Comment for algo.
Honestly I think geese could even be scary without being giant - those wings would hit harder and faster than most people could kick, and they'd be able to escape any serious consequences just by flight... That nice goose dinner would be rather sober when getting it resulted in the wizard and rogue being beaten unconscious by waterfowl... 😂😂😂
Thanks for your comment and time - I 100% agree. I think most people have had a scary encounter in RL with a goose, and a gaggle of them charging in combat might trigger some subconscious flee response in many of us!
First!
