Join me as I dig into a brand new backgammon board from across the pond.
The Lennox is a beautifully crafted hardwood backgammon board made by @BONECLUB in the UK. I had the pleasure of working personally with Guy Haslam, founder/owner, on this video.
I also enjoy a beer provided by Guy from Farm Yard Brewing Co. in Lancaster, England www.farmyardbrew.co.uk. The beer is called Chaff, a delicious session hazy IPA jam packed with fruity aromas and flavors.

beautifull have fun with the board
Great video and review, Jason! Are the dice cups lipped? The reason I ask is because at the Denver tourney my opponent pointed out that the cups that came with my FTH board did not have a lip inside. (And would therefore presumably be easier to manipulate the dice rolls). He was very nice about it, but it made me aware of something I hadn't previously thought about. Anyways, I always look forward to your videos, take care!
Hi Paul. I appreciate you watching a commenting. The cups that came with the board do not have much of a lip, but dice a definitely randomized well with good shakes. I’m surprised someone said the FTH cups don’t have a lip. I feel those FTH cups have good trip lips. I’ve started bringing a baffle box with me to tournaments in case someone is persnickety about dice cups hahaha. Cheers! 🍻
Congrats, that looks pretty sweet!
Another Jason! Hello. Thanks for watching and dropping a comment. Had a blast opening this one. Cheers! 🍻
Oh damn ! I wanna play you now !!!😂
Cheers! 🍻
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Another great video dude!
Thanks Brother Scott! I appreciate you man.
Great to see a Bone Club review! I like the action of the leather, on other leather boards they either slide too much or not at all. Now to me the wood color and design seems to plain to me, has a "home made" feel to it. Would have been nice to have the wood have some elegant type of etching or carving to it. Really like your calming voice through out the video. Hope you give us an update on the board after some matches.
This is Vinny, right? I recognize your channel picture as I've watched several of your board videos. Plus I recognize you from St Louis this year. Cheers dude! Thanks a million for watching and commenting. BC has a stained wood version of The Lennox for a slightly different look and feel. Overall construction is the same for all variations though. I will say that even though overall design is simpler with The Lennox compared to other BC board, the construction is solid. I will definitely let you know how it's holding up after some tournament appearances. What tournaments are you going to this year? Congrats on winning St Louis BTW.
I also appreciate your comment about my voice in the video. I struggle with the sound of my own voice at times. I am glad to hear it came across nicely.
@BeerAndBG Yes it's me Vinny, thanks man, yes was nice meeting you in St. Louis! My next tournament is Chicago in May and then most likely St.louis in June (my brother lives there). It really shows how much you enjoy playing with a nice board in your video, part of the reason I like the game so much, a gorgeous board to play on makes the experience so much more pleasant.
Should catch you in Chicago, then hopefully St Louis as well. See you there! I couldn't agree with you more. The tactile nature of this game is huge for me too, and the board can make a difference. I love engaging my mind with strategy, tactics, and some math, but the visual and auditory aspect of the game are icing on the cake.
I've only heard about Bone Club in passing so it's nice to see one of their boards in detail. Nice work! Can't wait to see it in person and lose on it.
You da man! Thanks brother. The very first match on it I took a loss, so nothing but wins from now on. I appreciate you tuning in. Let's make a triple J chouette happen by spring time. We'll meet near you.
Gorgeous handmade work! Do you know if you need to condition the leather playing surface to keep it healthy over time? Either way, my goodness that is lovely, a wise investment indeed sir! Thank you for the great content as well, always nice to see another Hoosier in the wild!
Hoosier!? Where are you from my friend? Thank you for watching and commenting. I am not sure about the leather surface. That is an excellent question I can pose to the builder. It was an absolute pleasure to play on in our clubs tournament two weekends ago. Cheers 🍻
@@BeerAndBG I was born in South Bend! My wife and I are currently living in Dodgeville, WI. near Madison. I am still a super beginner at the game but I am hoping to get out and meet some people that play casually in person. Keep up the great work!

Awesome job, Jason! Beautiful board from Bone Club! I can't wait to get a few in person matches in with you over the board. You saved some of that beer for me, right? 😉🤣 Cheers man!

Way too much work for one cup 😂 I'm a Maxwell House Man dammit!! 😅
Fair enough lol To each his own 😀 Thank you for watching
This was great. I will be playing in my first tournament in February. I'm going to play in the Texas Open. I decided to go open because I thought I would learn more than playing in intermediate or advanced. I'm 49 and I don't have access to XG but I do have BG Blitz. My game though is inconsistent. I've had 3 different games at the hardest difficulty with a PR of 0. But I've had my PR go anywhere from zero to thirty plus. But I do win a lot overall. It's single elimination so my goal is to make it past round one. Knowing my luck I'll end up drawing O'Hagen or Simborg in round one and get destroyed
Glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for following my journey at this tournament. You are going to have so much fun at the Texas tournament. Best of luck! XG has been such a huge improvement to my game. I would recommend investing in it for your study. However, my PR still varies. Some matches my PR is way high, some way low, but your average really tells the story. XG will track all the stats for you.
Thx for the tour. Nice to see some backgammon in US. and see CJC walk by. I meet her in MC in 2001, just a few years ago Lul. Greeting from Denmark.
Firstly, several months late to your tutorial vid. Complete Newbie question: preface. As a graphic designer hobbyist I'm always intrigued by the design and structure of things. Why do Backgammon boards have required hinges in the centre of board for the "bar/prison"? I realize many are designed to be closed like a briefcase, but can the board exist as a flush, smooth board sans central hinges for bar/prison, and still function? I assume that the budget friendly backgammon carboard boards (available at Target, Walmart, etc) have border depicting bar/prison. Always thought it would be cool to have a backgammon table. Hope my question wasn't too weird. Thanks in advance. Now I'll learn from your tutorial. ~ Eric.
I apologize for taking long to reply. First off, thank you for watching and commenting. This would be a very interesting historical review to see the evolution of the backgammon board. I personally feel it was design before function regarding the hinged area. They do make 1 piece boards called table top boards, but the bar is still in the same place. It is generally accepted that the bar is always in that location. I hope you picked up something from this video. Cheers 🍻
@BeerAndBG thank you. I'll have to google tabletop backgammon boards for design ideas then. Fascinating game insofar as there's always some "chance" due to dice rolls.
Awesome video! Hey I might have to make the trip to this tournament myself. It would be 5 hours 50 min. trip for me from Tulsa OK.
That’s a heck of a drive, but I would say worth it. Maybe I’ll see you there next year. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers 🍻
Where did you buy the extension checkers box? It’s a must for this type of board. Nice chill video!
I really appreciate you watching and commenting. Regarding the wooden bear-off trays, a member of our club has a buddy who does woodworking. He made us each customer bear-off trays for our travel boards. Pretty sweet! Cheers 🍻
@@BeerAndBG Now that Black Friday is near , I think about buying a travel FMgammon Board if it will be on sale. Do you think your buddy can make and sell one of these trays for a stranger like me based in UK? And around how much it is ? Thanks and keep the good work!
I am checking with the gentleman who makes them if he is open to working with you. I will keep you posted. Cheers!
Hi, thanks for the helpful video👍 Would you please tell me Where I get a backgammon like yours or whats the best way to get one
Hi! Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it. Are you asking where I got my backgammon set?

I will! Thanks for watching and commenting brother Scott. Still had a blast. See you in a couple weeks.
Are there money games and ` Chouettes going on in the evenings and at the bar? Or are people focused on the tournament ? What rating would you say the intermediate players are. I seem to be about a 19 on BG Galaxy, need work.....
First off, thank you for watching and commenting. From what I have seen at the few tournaments that I have been to, people are not bashful and will play backgammon as much as possible including cash games and chouettes well after the hustle and bustle of tournament play. Everyone seems to be really dialed into the tournament though too. Anyone who goes to these tournaments seems to really love backgammon and will take any opportunity to play, which is so awesome. I’ve transcribed some of my matches from these tournaments, and I suspect (small data set though) that most people in intermediate play on average around 10-14 PR. This is a very loose estimate though. Could be higher could be lower. I wouldn’t get hung up on PR though. Just get in there and play. If you have a good understanding of match play, comfortable with the clock and cube, you probably belong in intermediate. My first tournament I played novice, I didn’t win or anything, but next time I felt intermediate was where I wanted to be. I hope any of this made sense. Cheers 🍻
Great stuff, Jason! Thanks for sharing your ups and downs with us. Can't wait to get back to doing more tournaments. Cheers my friend! 😁
Thanks for all your feedback dude. I hope you don't mind I gave you a nod at the end of the video. I appreciate you. Let's plan the next tournament adventure!!! The 3 midwest J's need to throw down in the I-division again 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
@@BeerAndBG No worries man! I appreciate the nod 😉 Heck yeah! One of us has to win at some point, right....? RIGHT!? 🤣 Cheers, Jason!
Or 1st, 2nd, and 3rd...BOOM! Hahahaha
@@BeerAndBG That would be sick! And a fun video ;)
How do we make that happen 🤔 ah! 3 person tournament hahaha
I played in my first tournament as a Novice in Madison and did not play that well. However, it was good to gain that experience and will enter a tournament again in the intermediate class. Nice video on your experience including the traveling and hotel parts of going to tournament.
Hi Mike! Hey, thanks so much. My original plan included going to Madison this year, but we had a last minute trip with our kiddos instead. Glad to hear you had a good experience there. Any highlights from your trip? I appreciate your comment. Thank you for watching. Cheers 🍻

Thank you for watching. I appreciate you commenting as well. Cheers 🍻
Excellent vlog, really enjoyed it! I still haven't had a chance to attend a tournament as BG is not as popular in Spain as it is in other European countries...
The tournament atmosphere is so much fun. Spain would be a wonderful place to go play in a tournament 🙂 Thank you watching and commenting!

I appreciate this tutorial. But I found it really confusing looking at the XG simulation where the board was configured upside down from your camera angle view the port on your table.
Hey, thanks for watching and thank you for the comment. Yes, you are absolutely right. I realized and made sure I corrected that in the new video I put out about using a shot clock app to help with time management. I appreciate your feedback. Cheers 🍻
Thisis something I need to work on. What app did you use? I looked at some on the App store.

Hell yes! 🙂 We are just a couple of Jasons loving backgammon hahaha. Seriously, we are friends. We talk often. We hung out together at the Chicago Open. We even shared a beer 🍻 Thanks for commenting. Cheers!
❤
Good stuff, bud. Your club should consider speedgammon brackets every once in a while. They’re a great way to improve time management.
Thanks James! Oh man great idea. What clock settings do you all use for your speedgammon tournaments?
@@BeerAndBG Speedgammon is typically 2min in the bank with a 10s delay for a 5-point match. 👀
@@backyammonyams got it, nothing off the bank, but shave time off the delay. You da man!
@@BeerAndBGNo, it’s actually 2min total in the bank for the whole 5-point match, not 2min per point. It’s quick! But it makes normal match play seem like slow motion once you get used to it. 😆
@@backyammonyams Oh! Yow...that's gnarly. Sorry, I misunderstood. I can see how this would certainly improve your time management...getting into a more fast paced rhythm. Thanks brother!
That's a great idea. Thank you for the video Jason.
Cheers Alex! Thanks for watching sir. I am notorious for getting into time trouble. I need something to help push me to make the majority of decisions faster so I can conserve my time for the positions that really need it. I am going to St Louis at the end of September. Will you be playing in that tournament?
@@BeerAndBG I won't be going to St. Louis. It's hard to travel with work and family commitments. Good luck and safe travels.
Right on, just wondering. It is hard to find time to travel for BG. Neither my wife nor kids have interest in tagging along, which I don’t blame them. Maybe we will cross paths in person at a future tournament.
Great video and solid information. Thanks for the upload.
Thanks again Michael. I appreciate you. Cheers! 🍻
Nice video, thx for sharing. Let's see: winning a doubled gammon wins the match and a hit here puts you well on the way. That said, dancing is more likely than hitting and at the match score you'll be dropping the coming redouble. So it sure doesn't LOOK like a double... but is it? Well, by doubling now you are risking getting to -4,-2 immediately 16/36 of the time in order to try to get them in on a 2 cube on your hits 13/36 of the time. Are you more unhappy you didn't double on your hits, or more unhappy you did double on your dances? Well, the difference between -4,-3 and -4,-2 is small... probably less than 10% mwc. The difference between winning the match and -2,-4 is large, perhaps 33% mwc. So although dancing is more likely, you are getting great odds on the bet... better than 3-1, and you hit more than 1/3 of the time, many of them gammon wins. It's obviously a gamble to double here, but you are getting great odds from the match equity table... Double/take Positions like this $ players know as potential double/beavers as they need to get the cube turned for their gammons to count, but not owning the cube, they may not even be a favorite. Is that the case here? maybe not as there are those other rolls that enter but don't hit which are somewhat good for you (meaning they don't lose immediately), but it's a thought. And even if it were a money beaver, it could still be a good double here at the match score.
Wow! This is awesome. Lovely breakdown of mwc math and logic. I love your comment that “you are getting great odds on the bet”. I feel that statement embodies so much about backgammon. Risk versus reward. The XG result is beautiful as well 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Thank you for your comment. Cheers! 🍻
thx for sharing. Filling in the gap looks good, but some positions just require counting... getting closer misses on 2,1 and 4,4 while staying back misses on more... as you showed 3,2 and 3,1 in addition to 2,1; and 1,1 instead of 4,4 so 3/36 rolls versus 7/36. But filling in the 4pt wasn't a nullo play... you might have rolled a 4,4 instead of 5,5 and felt like a genius. For a tougher 'mini-game' play: take a checker from your innerboard and move it back to your 10pt and then try to play that 3,1.
Fantastic insight! I love your idea of reworking the position and playing from there for observation and experience. This type of approach would be beneficial to my training. Thank you for watching and for commenting. Cheers!
