RMS Queen Mary's Whistle, JUMP SCARE - SO LOUD!!!
มุมมอง 35K5 ปีที่แล้ว
On board the RMS Queen Mary in Long Beach CA for the 6pm whistle blast. and MAN IT"S LOUD! Watch out, that whistle will sneak up on you! My girlfriend and I eagerly await the 6pm whistle, aboard the starboard bridge wing. This will be the first time we hear it in person, and we really are not sure what to expect. The Bridge tour guide warned that "its gonna be pretty loud!". If you notice, my g...

    Just happened across your video as I was checking out hiking umbrellas. So you mentioned Teddi Boston; I know her well, I too am a volunteer along with her with (SGWA) San Gorgonio Wilderness Association. You are right, she is amazing. I'm sixty-two, whenever I think I'm getting a little old I go talk to Teddi. She is well into her 90's and still going strong. Her mind is still as sharp as a tack, her voice is booming when she is scaring off a bear, she still drives her little pick-up truck, and she still hikes the trails. She would often camp solo at our "home base" for SGWA in the San Bernardino Mountains, but the rest of we volunteers decided (secretly) to not let her be up there alone anymore. So now at least one other person is camped up there when she is there. I think she is on to us, but is happy for the company as well. Anyway back to the umbrella; I think I may get one. I would have liked to see how you strapped that onto your pack.

    • @stevencossin7905
      @stevencossin7905 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow that's so great! I'm glad she is still kickin butt and takin names. She seemed and sounds like a powerful force. Yeah apologies for not showing better how I attached the Umbrella. At the time these videos started out as more of a personal travel vlog, for me and friends who wanted to follow my trek. But looking back I could have jazzed them up a bit. I have gotten many similar questions like yours, and as I say in the video I really just looped it around the shoulder strap of the backpack and used the sit pad as a cushion for my clavicle. low tech for sure, but effective and comfortable. Not all shoulder straps are made the same though, a friend who was using an Osprey pack had a hard time trying it this way. Good luck, and say Hi to Teddy for me.

    • @stevencossin7905
      @stevencossin7905 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Art Silva, There is nothing to it. Just tell us how you feel and the truth of your experience. For my next thru-hike I think I’ll add more of the little things to the videos, like various camp spots and town experiences. And especially more of the other hikers I got to know very well. Those are the main things I’d suggest to you.

  • @Arthur-Silva
    @Arthur-Silva 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey man, thanks for taking the time to film and upload videos. I’m starting my thru hike in May 13, I’m really concerned about the heat since I’m starting this late. I think I might even do 100 miles and skip to the Sierras and flip-flop back to finish the desert section in November. Quick question, realistically, how long do you think it takes to clear the first 700 miles? 40 days?

    • @stevencossin7905
      @stevencossin7905 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Art Silva , Right on, that’s super exciting! You’ll be starting a good 3 weeks behind most of the pack. I myself started April 22 and was fortunate to have a relatively mild first couple weeks (temperatures wise) before it got too hot. In mid May as you are aware, you’ll be feelin the heat. If I use myself as a gauge, the first 700 miles can easily be done in 40 days. I expected and usually did better than 500 miles/month. The variables to consider are whether you have your trail legs yet or not? If you are flipping back then you most certainly will. And 0 days, which can be a huge drain on time, as fun as they may be/or not be, they are mostly unnecessary. Thanks for the question, I Hope this was of some use to you. Good luck out there. I found the desert sections to be far more beautiful and enjoyable than I had thought going in.

    Thanks for this update Steve. Any idea what the snow conditions are on the PCT south of Crater Lake? I have a long distance permit that starts July 1st at the OR/CA border and will be headed north.

    • @stevencossin7905
      @stevencossin7905 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Whiskey Delta the snow conditions south of Crater lake are improving quickly, this next week will be warm and sunny. We had a few days of rain and snow up high last week but unless we get another series of storms, by the time you start I expect that most of the southern Oregon will be clear. The high points like Crater lake and shaded spots may still be snowy though. Good luck and have a great hike. It'll be fine

    A flip flop makes no sense this year as the North Cascades are even worse than the Sierra. Not sure what I would do. Snowing again above 5500 ft or so here in Oregon, so the melt is being delayed yet again. We've only had a few hot days so far this summer.

      Clara Mullen glad you are enjoying the videos, and thanks for the tip. I've used that method often, earlier in the day of this video intact. but that only works for a few miles before the bags fail. gallon ziplock and grocery bags don't seem to hold up to the demands for longer term use.

      Honestly if I was able to watch all of your videos and enjoy them, I'm not sure. You can't really help the noise wind makes... I saw someone suggest a cotton ball for the mic opening on the phone but I'm not sure if I'd be able to hear the speaker that well doing that. There are also a lot of people that cannot afford to take 5+ months off work/family commitments so I think many section hike the entire thing in a span of years. I personally would wait till I'm retired to do this as I have some priorities to tend to at this time in life. For the mean time I will enjoy everyone else's adventure videos :-)

  • @VanMaiTai
    @VanMaiTai 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the show and tell. I've heard from other people's gear videos that they prefer the foam mattress because they've had experiences where the air mattress would get holes from sharp rocks and whatnot. I'm sure you've seen that on the trail though. Just something to keep in mind. :-) Oh and that's cool you make yourself available to hang out. Maybe you can do some trail angeling if you happen to live nearby the trail.

    • @stevencossin7905
      @stevencossin7905 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      VanMaiTai, hey yeah I saw a few air mats fail after a few months, but it was mostly from poor use. I didn't encounter a single one that failed due to a puncture by rock or pocky thing in the desert (which was my fear). plenty of friends used the same air mattress the whole trail and still with no problems. so to each their own, and a little luck tossed in :) I will definitely be trail angeling around the southern Oregon stretch this year!

    • @VanMaiTai
      @VanMaiTai 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, it does help to clear the campsite before hand of such things. Thinking about trail angeling myself as I live in the Santa Clarita area and only a few miles away from the Bouquet Cyn and San Francisquito Cyn roads where the PCT passes through. Have fun trail angeling and I look forward to more adventure videos on your channel. Happy trails!
