great video, But im wondering, How do you remove the throttle cable from the carburetor? I dont want to break something, I cant remove my carburetor since this cable is attached to carburetor to the handle.
@@AlexA-dp6kh on these old ones, it’s actually a solid rod from the throttle control on the left handlebar to the bell crank on the carb. There’s a hex head screw that you have to loosen on the carb to disconnect it.
Nice job 👍🏻 I have 3 model L gravelys good tractors thanks for taking me along!

I love these old 300 series john deeres. Ive got a 1978 john deere 316k and I recently picked up a Kabota TG1860 diesel mower a little 3 cylinder diesel engine in it. I want to someday stick it into a 300 series and make my own super diesel garden tractor.
@@iowafox2206 that would be a fun project.
@jasonwesbrock8735 I think it is a fun idea. I repowered my Case 222 garden tractor that's my main snow plow and working tractor. My John Deere 316K is my dedicated mowing machine. I brought it back from the dead a year ago and I love using that old machine. I'll definitely be keeping it long term. I love your videos glad I found your page!
Good job Jason. It runs good. I enjoyed the series and have a great day 🔧👍
@@gravelyman thanks!
NON ETHANOL GAS. Extremely important for all older small engines.
@@ebinmaine absolutely!
This chipper shredder looks like an Amerind Mackissic production. They've been selling them as stand-alone self powered machines and tractor implementation for several decades. I have a 1977 model that I recently restored. Mine is a tractor implement mounted on a Wheelhorse C160-8. Good video. Thanks for posting this.
The answer to the question you posed at about 16:18 is probably yes, there is something that is supposed to go there. I looked at my machine and there is a steel bracket that attaches to the top of the "flat" plate, the bottom of the carburetor, and the bottom of the air intake tube. Yours has that support at about the 2:15 mark. I couldn't tell if it was there at about 16-17... it wasn't there at about 19.
@@johngrossbohlin7582 thanks. I appreciate the info.
Great restoration, I'm still split on if you made the video to show it off or find those last period parts lol. Great work

What part # for the oil filter from fram? Thanks
PH6607
I’ve got a machine like that… last spring someone put it out to the curb with a “free” sign on it. It started right up! It needed some maintenance-new plug, sharpened the chipper knife, new R-clips for the guard pins, new belt, greased the shaft, changed the oil, and installed the chip guards correctly. It worked fine for 10-12 hours and then the clutch gave up the ghost-worn out. I ordered a new one and am awaiting delivery. With that I’ll have $100-110 in it…
@@johngrossbohlin7582 sounds like a good deal to me.

As much as I want a war time model L the valve adjustment on my 56 and 60 LI is a lot easier with the covers you unscrew vs this with the spring loaded covers.

@@mrbrisket6794 , that’s a great idea. Thanks.
What tires did you put on the tractor?
@@jeffreycindric5714, they were a pair of what Gravely called “semi pneumatic tires”. Basically, solid plastic tires from the 60s. They never went flat, but had almost zero traction.
Just found your Chanel and love it!
Thanks.
Great video. Looks like you specialize in the older Gravely’s. A video like this for the Commercial series tractors would be great. I assume there’s a lot of commonality between the two, but would be great to see this done on one of those machines.
Thanks for watching.
Looks like you could put other attachements on that.Never seen one, neat machine.
They made a few dozen different attachments for those over the years. Extremely versatile machines.
Do you ever show these machines doing the work they were meant to do? I wanted to see it mow some grass!
Not yet, but if you go to the “Gravelyman” channel, Artie just uploaded a great video of mowing with one of his Model Ls.
@@jasonwesbrock8735 I can't find him using the reel attatchment. He does show using a rotory mower attatchment. Would you consider showing the reel mower in use? By the way, the other restorations of these machines are awesome and thanks for the quick response. God bless.
@@nathanscott7910, oh, I’m sorry I misunderstood. I actually sold the reel mower shortly after filming this episode. I think RW3dogs has a video or two of him using a reel mower.
Thank you for the video! I recently bought an L and changed the oil/sludge out from sitting 20 years. It carried good oil pressure but after changing the oil to Rotella 15W40 and a new filter, no pressure on the gauge and didn't see any being returned to the front of the machine. Do these need reprimed every oil change?
weak magneto may need the magnet magnetized
I was wondering about that.
Nice to see an old machine fire that easy. I love finding old small engines that I can work on and get running. I have never seen a spark tester like that, but I will be looking for one now. Thanks.
Sometimes they’re relatively easy to get going. It definitely needs a top end rebuild though.
I do like the sound from the down draft muffler. What brand of spark tester are using.
They are sold under a few different brand names. Mine is an Echo.
Beautiful machine. My dad bought a 24 inch Reo reel mower in the 1950's that I used for 5 years until college.
Thanks for the kind words.
