This is the Problem with Christian Art
Dr. Brian Doak talks with film critic and theology professor Dr. Joel Mayward about art, faith, incarnation, and the image of the Divine in humanity’s creativity. Can the word “Christian” be used as an adjective to describe any kind of art? How should Christians discern what kind of films or music to engage with, and are there any that should be avoided outright? Is art necessary?

Can CHRISTIANITY and Education REALLY Mix?

“For it is written: 'I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.' Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?” (1 Corinthians 1.19-20). How can Christian students and scholars reconcile statements like this with the earnest pursuit of understand...

Brian talks with theologian and professor Lindsey Hankins about the University's role in catechizing young people toward a thoughtful and durable life of faith. How is the decline in church attendance affecting students' Biblical literacy and understanding of Church history? What should professors expect their...

Dams, Environmental Ethics, and the Tower of Babel
I've been homeless before and still managed to keep a full time job. I used an old address from an extended stay motel where I had previously stayed and nobody questioned it I had my driver's license but I had to get a social security card. I stayed clean and groomed. I never asked anybody for anything. And I always kept my distance from other homeless people especially those who I suspected were using drugs or were alcoholics. I would go to places where I could get a free meal from time to time but I kept my distance I would eat and just leave. Part of the time I had a car and part of the time I didn't. I had gym memberships where I could take showers. And I washed my clothes at laundry mats. I only stayed in shelters twice and for a very short time due to extremely cold weather and I didn't talk to anyone there. The other homeless people thought I was a snob or something but I didn't care. I still see some of them begging on occasion when I go back into the city for my work . It's always been my mindset that any man who couldn't work and support himself instead of trying to get something from everyone he saw he wasn't much of a man at all. Don't get me wrong I know there are mental and physical circumstances that hinder a person from being able to work but I'm referring to my own situation not anybody else's and this is the ideology and the standards that I held myself to. I wasn't going to let homelessness become my excuse for giving up. And my word was all that I had. If I told someone that I would show up to work by God I would walk through hell and high water to be there. My whole body was sore and aching and sometimes I hadn't had very much sleep but I didn't care. I had a goal in mind and I was going to reach it even if it killed me trying I would go down fighting. I worked hard and saved everything that I possibly could and I bettered myself by going to public libraries and reading and by taking training courses in different fields. I now have a home and a little plot of land nothing fancy it is a little old fixer upper house that needs some work but it will eventually be a really nice place but it is so much better than being on the streets. It's a place where I can set out on my own front porch and reflect on what it took to get there and give thanks to God for giving me the strength and the courage to keep putting one foot in front of the other and for leading me in the right direction. And I have a good job maybe not the best but it is a good job and I am very grateful for it. I am trying to move up as well. I moved into a nice clean neighborhood in a much smaller town where property is cheaper. I have a fairly nice car now and I'm looking to buy another for a spare and I have everything that I need. And I did it on my own. So don't think that just because you become homeless that you can't beat it because I did it. I am living proof that it can be done. Just stay true to yourself and stick to your own beliefs and don't let anybody influence you or tell you that you can't do something or be somebody because you can.
Forget the "proper term" nonsense and just advocate for getting them shelter!!
I don’t care about Gen Z-ero.
Why is she saying she didn’t have anyone to look up to while surrounded by white men while accusing them of being the ones who need theologians to look a certain way? It’s seems like they don’t care, but she calls that whitewashing.
As a gen z I can say we are doomed
Social media is what ruined gen z minds, think about it they have no attention span, they are the least educated, and have the highest rate of autism/mental disabilities not from being born that way more so than just developed it instead.
“I just think of all the movies that have a white, blonde haired, blue eyed Jesus” Such as…?
Good point. Jesus is the Word of God and Jesus is the image of God. In my mind I'm seeing charismatic worship compared to "high church" or formal worship. I don't think one is right and one wrong. God speaks through many venues. It is good to appreciate all forms of worship or created art when it brings glory to God and doesn't oppose His word.
Thanks for the discussion! As a more technically-minded person who still loves engaging with art and media to at least some degree, I already appreciate the artistic dimension of the Creator expressed in creation. When it comes to human expressions of art, I've been wrestling with the idea of how to deal with real human issues while not glorifying sin or unnecessarily/gratuitously displaying acts of sin in a way that is ultimately not glorifying to God or triggering to people who struggle with various sins.
No. There will not be another civil war 😂😂😂😂😂
🧡💛💚💙
It's not Christ that should adhere to the schools but the schools adhere to Christ! But to understand this means you must understand that Satan is real! Not just in spirit or our spirit but as an entity, which means he is the opposite of Christ or the dark side of things an so he must have children as well! Since the word created everything ( this world/reality, you, me and everything) then the teachings should be given thanks onto the lord!
To prepare for any Christian or secular college/university, a Christian student needs a foundation in logic, Christian apologetics and Bible study methods. Resources for finding answers to doctrinal or philosophical questions would also be helpful. Even at George Fox, they must be prepared to sacrifice their career goals if they have a professor who won't pass them because of their faith in the God of the Bible.
Good discussion as always. Appreciate the struggle between understanding how Christianity and culture interact since the Gospel IS for all of humanity. Also for how different realms of knowledge interact. In some sense all truth is God's truth but it doesn't feel intuitive to say that something like computer science and theology aren't distinct. What does it mean to engage in the marketplace ideas genuinely while not leveling the playing field so much as to deny that ideas have consequences and that some conclusions are genuinely morally judgeable?
Just cut your hair shorter and they'll think you're a man.
David French publicly endorsed Kampala Harris. He doesn't care about character one single bit.
I honestly thought that the 1st book was the best book because of how it was so straightforward to the resurrection ❤
If a civil.war were to occur, it wouldn't last very long. The right will show up to a field of battle with the weapons of war the left cry about while the left would show up with a freaking pool noodle...
Excuses. Excuses.
They're struggling to reconcile their faith in Jesus with MAGA politics.
When Aslan sacrificed himself and rose again ..... I shud have known ... But I was too young to make it a reference ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Any Christian at a church with a flag knows they are part of God’s kingdom, which is greater than anything on earth. I think they understand though the history of our nation and give thanks to God for blessing us and giving us freedoms we have. We have our duty to our country and government as outlined in the Bible, and I think it’s important to be proud of America. I think the issue is putting that above God…like gay pride flags in a church that celebrate sinful identity over our identity in Christ.
Why is an American flag flying anywhere in America be an issue?
I think this is just reading it too deeply, no pastor or church is ever thinking this deep or literally and this is the type of rhetoric that casts a negative light on Christians
Or maybe it's bc we're in America so there will be American flags every where? Just one idea
There a Catholic community near me and they have two flags Vatican city🇻🇦 and the us flag 🇺🇸
Faith cannot exist without doubt
Reason is the opposite of faith.
Great thoughts from the prophets. Like few others, they've had to wrestle with open-ended suffering (vs someone like David who had a better sight on the immediate promises and fulfillment of victory for himself). Appreciate that answer about multiple models for processing suffering. Also, powerful word there about how faith needs to grow up or it will break. Gotta actually process that one a bit.
You are such a liar😅
My money goes to drugs I need help
I think you mean more misinformed! More entitled! More arrogant! More lazy! It’s not all their fault! It’s western society! Bad parenting! Bad teachers! Bad society! They need real leaders real true! Most of them are Godless so naturally more evil is around them!
A “second American Revolution” that will be bloodless “if the left allows it to be.” Heritage Foundation Project 2025 President Kevin Roberts
I put these guys squarely in the category of "don't worry, everything will be fine" comfort theorists. They'd lose their jobs in a heartbeat if they were seen to side with the conspiracy cranks. Predicting anything unpleasant, really, is just impossible in our society. So, happy news! No threat of civil war here. Trump can safely take away our rights.
I LOVE LINCOLN❤ ❤ ❤ ❤
Trump supporters are being rallied to take arms against illegal and legal aliens inland as first phase.
This country has never been united.
Yes.
apologetics is just Christians circle jerking eachother
Those doubts are your brain struggling to break free from a prison of willful ignorance and superstition.
I have faith that religion is fake.
Amen
There are plenty of nazi party decedents still living in Germany. Yet to this day, there is not a single statue of Hitler out in a public space? The same rules need to apply in America throw all this confederate crap in a museum because it has no business representing the American people anymore. It's a disgrace that it hasn't been done already.
Wait a minute...WHICH Christian faith? Protestantism? And which denomination? Or is it Catholicism? Or Orthodox? Or Mormon? I don't want to pick "the wrong one"!!!!
Want some doubt? Here's some: You would have completely different fervently held beliefs if you had been born somewhere else in the world, raised by parents of a different belief system. So how true can any of them be if believing in them depends almost entirely on the circumstances of your upbringing?
So your doubt is due to where you were born or live? That's not very rational, or convincing. And if I had been born somewhere else in the world, why might I not also hold Christian beliefs like others there? Where in the world are their no (zero) Christians? BTW, the truth of Christianity depends upon the veracity of its historical claims. If they are true, then so is Christianity.
Certainty is the opposite of faith

GIRL PLEASE! We see Gen Z crying, having fits and meltdowns everywhere. They are also the poor little me generation and hate their parents They don’t even know their own gender.
Love this ... of course! Thank you for posting. I remember hearing J.P. Moreland say, "We don't require certainty, we require confidence."
Great quote!
This is just manipulating your own mind into believing something without sufficient reason
