Slow Life In Bali
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 27 ม.ค. 2013
In 2021, we started the build of our home in Ubud, Bali, using only our own four hands. The concept is a steel framed modular design, elevated off the ground to avoid problems with moisture & rising damp which is very common in Bali. The main build was completed in 2022, with ongoing small jobs, as well as the pool & landscaping to be completed.
Early 2023, we started a new building project in the North of Bali, so make sure to subscribe to this channel if you want to follow along!

#17 North Bali Build // Baby Chickens and Building an Outdoor Kitchen
In this episode, we build an outdoor kitchen made from the bamboo that was left over after a recent storm destroyed our fence. Our hens also started to lay eggs and we welcomed 14 little baby chicks to the family. We move the chicken shed to the original block of land.

MYSTICAL BALI // A Balinese Temple Ceremony in UBUD
มุมมอง 659ปีที่แล้ว
In July 2023 I attended an important village festival celebrating the anniversary of Pura Dalem in Ubud, Bali. Preparations for this festival took more than 3 months, involving every member of the village. There were traditional Balinese dances, performances and ceremonial animal sacrifices. The temple was overflowing with flowers, incense and elaborate offerings.
#26 Ubud House Build // Pouring the Pool - BUILDING IN BALI
มุมมอง 3Kปีที่แล้ว
After almost 6 months of preparation work, we are finally pouring the pool. We have hired a local team of around 10 people that will pour the entire pool in one day to avoid cracking and leaking in the future. We finalise the plywood formwork for the pool, which is now ready to be poured. Unfortunately our concrete guy cancels on us (for the second time) so we have to postpone until our return from Australia. #22 Ubud House Build // Digging out the Pool - BUILDING IN BALI
มุมมอง 5Kปีที่แล้ว
We start digging out the space for the pool, which will be approximately 7x3 metres and mostly free standing due to the terraced land. We receive a large truck full of volcanic rocks for the garden retaining wall and our steel fabricator delivers the steel crates for the pool foundations. Thanks for sharing your journey with us, awesome project ❤️🌴
Thanks for watching!
Admire your courage.25year lease in Bali 😊
Still not sure how you actually get any work done. I think I would struggle to get out of that hammock. Every time I watch your channel my body needs a holiday to match the holiday my Brain has just had. Keep them coming and enjoy.😊
You're right, it's tough to get out of that hammock! 😄 But then again, if we want to progress we have to get off our butts and get cracking! Haha
Looking forward to watching your new house build - we loved the design of your Ubud house ! Do you still have the home in Ubud? Do you rent it out? … would love to stay there!
Yes we do, you can find the link to our Airbnb listing in the About section of this Channel 🙏
Masyaalloh,....cita-citaku banget ini, semoga di ijabah punya keinginan seperti mereka berdua, amiiin, btw terimakasih atas video yg menginspirasi ini, salam cinta dari penduduk urban di jkt😍😍, teach me plis how to give thumb 10000kali
Terima kasih banyak 🙏🙏🙏
Just pop up on my screen, north bali make me into it. After one vid i need to back from where u start....congrats. u got one new subs !
Thanks for following along with our journey!
Hope this structure can withstand huge monsoon storms like we had last nite here in Candidasa😊
Fingers crossed it will withstand the rain and storms. The weather has been pretty crazy hasn't it. Stay safe!
I really loved watching your video, your place is so beautiful and lush .I'm from the north of bali aswell but no where near you (the beach😅) we have rivers and waterfalls instead ❤😊🌺🌻🌼
Thanks! It's a beautiful part of the world! 😄 Where are you located?
Simply stunning ❤
Thank you! Cheers!
Wow North Bali looks stunning. Now sure if we'll get that far in our boat car 😅 but we'll definitely be following you for inspiration ❤
Yes it's definitely very beautiful here, we especially love those high mountains dipping into the sea below. So spectacular and unique in Bali. If you ever do make it, come and say hello! 😀
Lovely to see you rooting in the north!
We are so happy to be here! Come visit one day 😀
You should really put that bamboo on a stone or something dry. Just sticking it into the ground will rot this in no time. I have done so myself before. Had to rebuilt it all the time
You are absolutely right and we would have done it if the kitchen was going to be a long term thing but we only need it while we build the house. So hopefully it will last 12 months! Fingers crossed 🤞
Happy Sunday
Happy Sunday to you too!
Hello Is Always Good to see you all ❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you so much for watching! 🙏
Thank you. It was very inspiring and relaxed. It looks beautiful. I have a question. Do you know why the Balinese people only give cows a small place and do not even allow them to walk in their sheds? I have wondered for many years, and I now see you do that, too.Thank you.
Thank you for watching and commenting! The cows in the video are our Neighbour's' cows and we have also wondered the same thing since we first came to Bali. I guess animals are simply viewed differently here.
@@slowlifeinbali Thank you. Actually when I lived in Bali some years ago, I studied Hindu texts and paintings and healing, in which actually animals are seen as divine.
This is living
Thanks for your lovely comment, yes we think so too!
Goals. Preach what you’re doing. I do wonder who’s cows tho? Can they be free roaming makes me sad when they’re tied up and confined 🥺
We feel you... unfortunately it's the local way of doing things.
Do you have advice on trying a lifestyle like this for a family with a child in Bali? Where can you find a rental house, or maybe you have other suggestions if you were just starting out?
Anything is possible if this is the kind of life you want. Some of our friends have had kids here and it's their home now, just like anywhere else in the world 🤗
How's the weather there? Is it as hot as in canggu Seminyak , or more like in Ubud?
Yes it's very hot and the rainy season is very short (only 2-3 months). So not like Ubud at all!
wonderful life and inspiring😀
Glad you're enjoying it! 🙏
Astoundingly Stuuunnniiinnng!!! I LOVE your STYLE! 💕
Thank you so much!!
Building anything in Bali is really a mentally taxing endeavor. To those that don't know this yet, find a really good contruction company.
Absolutely, good advice!
Thank you for sharing 🙏 Just discovered and subscribed to your channel. May I ask how many sqm is each of your two lots?
Thank you for your interest in our channel! The first block is approximately 1000 m2 and the second one is 1700 m2.
Very elegant set up. Congratulations!
Thanks! It's been a long journey.
So nice ,beautiful Where is it the location in north bali?? Is it near lovina?
Near Bondalem
@slowlifeinbali oh it's close to my village tianyar ,a few week ago i visit my parents at village and i saw a few foreign tourist there... That's really good cause this time tourists come to other area in bali not only south bali (Kuta, legian, jimabaran, nusa 2 or sanur)
Yes we agree!
Quisiera poder entender lo que dices 😢
I will add the transcript in the description, then you can translate it 🙏
What an awesome location to build a home! Congrats! ❤
Thank you!! 😊
Quedó muy hermoso 🎉🎉🎉
Thanks, we're very happy with how it turned out!
Hermosos videos , ustedes y su trabajo genial , muestren más de esa vida tan tranquila, yo no hablo ingles pero entendí toda la parte constructiva , les felicito!! Me encantaría saber más de ustedes y ver vídeos con traducción ❤
We’re so happy you’re enjoying the series so far! All our upcoming videos will have subtitles which can be switched into different languages 🙏
Where are you watching from?
Berbaur dgn masyarakat Indonesia, jaga alam Indonesia.
We don't own the land, we have rented it 🙏
You should learn about planting and harvesting according to the Moon cycles. The Farmer's Almanac Moon Cycles is the place to start.
Yes that has always intrigued us. The Balinese people already do this so we will draw on the knowledge of our staff as well 🙏
Finally caught up with all your videos. Completely jealous of everything you've created so far and I'm looking forward to keeping tab's on your journey going forward. On a selfish note, please try to keep regular updates. Looking forward to seeing your plans for the new house. Good luck and hopefully see you in your next video soon.
We’re so happy you’re enjoying the series so far, we have some exciting plans for the new house coming up, so stay tuned!
@@slowlifeinbali Ready and waiting.
Wow , started with this video that just popped up and now have gone back through all your stories and just watched this one again. Well done to you both, my wife have spent a life doing similar things in Western Australia, building dwellings on bush blocks , renovations right through to our current house build in Margaret River this time built largely by our son, we have also just finished a outside dwelling utilising a sea container and skillion lean to. Always best to design and do as much as you can yourself and it is so refreshing watching you work together to achieve your goals, as a civil engineer I also appreciate the precision in the design and the way you work through every detail.Lastly there is so much Insta TH-cam relating to bali that is all about big flashy villas more suited to the Mediterranean than Bali, this definitely shows a more real side of the Bali of old. Are there any low key coastal hotels etc in your area?
Thank you for your kind words, we appreciate your support. Yes, there are many alternatives to large concrete villas and our wish is that people who want to build in Bali will start thinking more outside the box (and with the environment in mind) 🌱
What thickness is the GRC Board?
12mm... But would probably go 20mm in future.
What parts of Ubud flood?
Most areas that are built up in and around the Centre, which is all of Ubud now. Unfortunately (and surprisingly) infrastructure projects are often still lacking proper planning and drainage is often not even considered, which is crazy!
Just discovered this channel, love the video style. My wife and I have a large plot of land over looking Lovina full of Jati and Mango Trees. I plan to build there when I retire in a few years, hopefully document everything
Hey guys, that sounds really wonderful. Even looking back on our first episodes now is such a great memory, so definitely document your own journey in some way!
I've been food treeplanter in Bali since 1989. Leave your wenbsite so you cameet me in Ubud.
Yes sounds great! You can contact us through our website 🙏
@slowlifeinbali just did
And also the mosquitos, how to handle them?
We only get a few at sunrise and sunset, a mosquito net helps 🙏
With that material dont you feel the heat of the tropical weather? Or you ok with that heat?
It's not too bad because the house has a very open design, so most windows and doors are open all day to let in the breeze
Nice video...❤❤❤ Mantab....👍👍👍
Why are they building boundaries and isolation 😂
This is a real life .... i mean, real
Tidak hanya menyewa tanah. Bukan memilikinya.
I thought to myself, finally, people understanding the value in the beautiful land, and her seasons. Mother Earth. Find an older local person who has gardened for decades. Learn about what bugs might descend and how to beat them. It’s the best fun growing food. What about seaweed gathering for the garden? Can you grow courgettes?
We're glad that you understand our sentiment ♥️
What brand equipment for the filming scroll? just wanna know more....
We use Fujifilm XH1 with 23mm lens 🙏
The pig is tied up, how come it not roaming free?
It is the neighbour's pig, unfortunately this is how most pigs in Bali are kept... Many live in concrete pens all their life (not so different from Europe), so this particular pig is actually quite 'lucky'.
Great video & great piloting too! ❤
Thanks!
Glad to see you back. 💪
Great work would love to see the beginning of the pool .
If I were you, I would compost rather burn trimmings, or any organic waste for that matter.
We are composting most of our organic waste already. Banana trunks & grass clippings become food for the neighbour's cows, kitchen scraps go to our chickens. We have used most of the old bamboo fence to make an outdoor kitchen (next episode) and a chicken coop. What you can see being burnt is the last remains of what cannot be reused and would take too long to compost. The burning also helps create ash which is extremely mineral rich and helps with fertilizing our soil and gardens 🙏
