Rolex Explorer 2 polar 16570. Was it worth the wait?

I got the watch back yesterday and very happy with it. I just wanted to provide an update. As always these are mechanical things and poop happens! It’s all sorted now.

My time with my Cayman is coming to an end so it feels like the right time to recap on my ownerships costs. I did forget the paint correction and ceramic coating which was £500 ish but most might not choose to do this.

Thanks for the review mate. Whats your wrist width? i was reading a review of this watch on Fratello and it seemed long.
My wrist is 7 inches in circumference. I’d say it’s about 2 and 1/4 inches wide. While the watch is 51mm lug to lug the shape of the lugs and they way they come to a point makes it wear smaller than that I think. Like with all watches the best thing to do is try it on. I think it wear smaller than the overall dimensions suggest.
@@wheelsandwatchesOh, yeah my wrist is 51mm wide. This is too big for me. it sure is perfect for your wrist
@roubenkhosrovian yeah that would be too small I think. There is always the non chronograph model you could look into.
@@wheelsandwatches I'm saving for a flyback chronograph. It appears to me under 12k the only wearable options are new hanhart, new Carl F. bucherer or used Glashütte original. Others are either too thick or too long. Guess I'll go for the hanhart then.
@ it’s a complicated movement needing a lot components. The zenith had over 300 pieces making up the movement. I would go GO personally. Incredible value for money and massively overlooked brand.
I have a submariner and the sound of the bezel is amazing. I have the Pelagos blue dial and that watch is thick, so I think I could get away with it due to my 7 1/2 wrists. I would get it but don’t think I would pay the asking price. I have bought my four Tudors on bezel App. They wear thick. lol.
If you move the control box onto the brickwork pillar that the old door was mounted on then the cable won't rub on anything
Do you mind me asking how do you finance your vehicles? Cash or part/full finance?
Not at all. Up until now cash and personal loan. Idea being when the loan is paid off I own the car and then use that as the deposit for the next car. I don’t use other car finance options as personal loan interest rates are always a fair bit less. It’s a longer way to move up the chain than other car finance options but means I have more of my own money in the cars so less liability should I need to sell them. I try to do mainly my own money and top up with finance. So maybe 60% ish my cash and loan for the rest. I would like to get to a point where I don’t finance at all but we will see.
@ thanks for sharing! I’m looking at buying a 981 in the coming few weeks so was curious. I just found your channel and really like the detailed content, keep it up, I’m subbed 👍
@Nick-jk4lr ah cool! That’s exciting. I hope you find it helpful. Enjoy the hunt. Happy to answer any questions you might have.
My rolex kermit still looks in pristine condition after so many years i got it last 2005 as a graduation gift from my mom and dad.
It's stolen the wrist time from the zenith!!
After the initial honeymoon period with the explorer 2 I did put the zenith back on all last week 👍. I need to get back into a rotation but yes I still love this explorer 2.
Some cool things about this model: the slim and trim size, the tiny secondary outer bezel edge that is polished, the white dial with red gmt hand, the delrin bushings etc of the 3186 movement
Agree. It is a superb watch.
My first Rolex 15 years ago, I still love it for so many reasons.
Negative nancy😂
🤪
Please get a Speedmaster. Doesn’t have to be a Moonwatch. Maybe the FOIS or 57. You won’t regret it. I promise.
Absolutely on my list at some stage. The recently release flight master looks nice and I live the white dial speedy pro too.
That chronograph seconds hand not center would bother me
Oh yeah, didn’t even notice that!
Wowzers. Outrageous and infuriating. Zenith has problems.
Being a brand new movement I was anticipating issues. They were all resolved really well with superb customer service and that’s the important bit for me.
Wowzers your call out of those devastating clasp errors is all but disqualifying. Such ridiculous complexity in its design is a real outrage. Am I the only one infuriated?😡
I wouldn’t let the clasp put you off. It’s very well made and very comfortable. You should handle one in person and you will see it’s all good. I just like to cover all aspects in detail on my videos.
This was my first Rolex, gently used, back in 2014. Still have it and will never sell. The only thing that would make it perfect is if that bezel was turnable.
That would be good but then it’s just the GMT. I do love it. Early days but I think it’s a keeper.
@wheelsandwatches not *just* a GMT... a lean and mean GMT with steel bezel! : )
Haha. True.
i never personally was a huge fan of the bracelet. have the black dial just threw it on an aftermarket white oysterflex rubber bracelet with a thicker clasp..makes the watch look totally different
If you change the strap it could be released as a watch today. It is a modern looking and feeling watch head, movement etc
Okay I get it I thought this was a "new watch" review, I proffered mine in black when I owned one, though kinda like the white more I see it, GREAT entry level Rolex, for a watch with an open metal bezel, I didn't have any problems for a couple years, having said that I will only buy ceramic bezel ones now after my horrific experience with a Yachtmaster II bluesy..barely knicked the bezel I felt like at least...Rolex would not "service it" under normal conditions, offered to work on the Bezel I pay allot with no guarantees, or pay them $2,000 for a new bezel...yeah...traded in for a GMT master II, was really nice while I owned it, but was a complete hog as is Rolex in terms of that cherry bezel so easy to scratch and Rolex impossible to deal with or have any "fair" service for me...the designed it! Not my fault eventually was nicked, should give people as best deal possible for those if problems with bezel, rediculous..this one is not crazy like that though no comparison, well some but it's a good looking watch don't worry :)😊
That had a platinum bezel didn’t it? Shame but I understand what you are saying.
congratulations on your new watch,
Thank you. 😃
I could'nt undetstand a word he was saying! How much did he say he bought it for? 😅
lol! I paid £6,750.
Dick lol 😂
Thats like 8,000 good price 👍
Fab piece. Do you think you have now caught the ‘Rolex Bug’ particularly for the 5 digit models ?
Interesting question. I definitely prefer the 5 digit models to anything post that era. I’d love a Kermit that’s for sure. I wouldn’t say I have caught the Rolex bug though. Life is too short and there are too many other brands I want to try.
@wheelsandwatches I don't know how you can at this point, for me I'm super sick of the company, so much demand instead of meeting it, they want in on the pre-owned market, and don't expect any deals either, if you buy one they are sure to be at market and then some... Seems to be the new trend in high snobbery society, $600 dollar T Shirt with matching $500 hat, hottest look for the year, everyone runs out to buy it until they are sold out and people are fighting over the women's model with a slight red at the brim instead of the yellow which is the whole look that everyone went crazy for in the beginning. Instead of simply manufacturing and selling more hats and T's they end production, leaving this allure off WOW if you were able to get it, and just normal inventory always at the shop...it is rediculous I point to CLOTHING as an example the watches are nice, but I have about had it with them...and the new tactic in sales of high value items...
Can you do a video on how you polish it? If you didn't sell it that is ^_^
Sadly I have sold the watch. The steps I follow are below. All you need is grey scotchbrite pad, tape and patience. 1. Tape up the areas of the bracelet you are not brushing. 2. Ensure the links sit proud of the bracelet so ideally not flat. 3. Brush gently and consistently in a straight line applying very little pressure. Consistent straight action is key! It can take 50 or more brushes to get the finish you want and remove marks. Practice on a cheap watch first.
@@wheelsandwatches Cheers, that's very helpful. Would you reccomend NOT doing it to the whole bracelet at once? Just do the scratch ed links? one link at a time?
I would yes unless you have a very steady hand! It is easier to have a straight consistent movement over one link than two or more.
Kudos on getting the explorer II that you prefer, buddy. Immensely happy for you. May you and yours have a merry christmas 🎄❄
Thanks chap. Have a great Christmas.
£10 quid aliexpress.
What do you think of the explorer 40mm
It’s a very safe very nice watch. Lacks personality but sometimes that’s ideal. Can’t really go wrong with one. I’d say for smaller collections it’s a nice watch to have.
I gave 6000 USD for my 2010 G series 3186 16570. No box or papers though. It's been great.
what a fake
what happens if you run this chronograph 24 hours a day? how long does it cut down the service time due to wear and tear? how long does it cut down the power reserve i wonder as well? those are my 2 major questions for this watch because i want / need to see my seconds hand move hehehe.
I can’t answer the question around wear but also wouldn’t leave it running all the time. The power reserve is amazing on this! They test the power reserve with the chronograph running and that is their stated reserve on their site of 60 hours. Without the chronograph running it’s about 72 hours!
This watch is in my shortlist. Does the issue with the shape of the component as you mentioned affecting all their production of this watch or was it just yours in particular?
It will have been on all watches to a point. I don’t know how you would confirm that without trying the chronograph in your hand before buying. If you for one then there is a fix even if it is inconvenient.
@ Thanks. I tried this watch on over the last weekend at my AD. Tried on a few other pieces like the chronomaster original , chronomaster sport, IWC ceramic chrono 41, jlc Polaris chrono. I liked this zenith pilot big date fly back the most , the way it felt on my wrist and the depth of the dial and Arabic numerals was captivating.
It’s my favourite of all the watches on Jace owned for many reasons. - it’s under the radar. - it’s the most comfortable watch I have owned owing to the strap and lightweight case. - it’s super scratch resistant. - it has the best crown action and crown tactility of any watching have owned. - the movement through the display case back is beautiful. - the chronograph pushers have the nicest feel of any chronograph watch I have ever used. - it wears a lot smaller than the dimensions suggest. - so many nods to it being a pilot watch. - a clean, symmetrical and well thought out dial. I could go on! I love it.
yeah its not lining up
Hi. So what was the issue with the movement? I’m not sure if you recall, but I’m the chap who had a similar movement problem with my 16610LV? I was told that the cause of my movement fault was “a small chip on the movement palette”. Apparently this defect was very difficult to find and they suspect it had happened during the service which it had earlier this year. I will be receiving the watch back in the next few weeks from Rolex with a full report of the defect found. By the way, I have the same 16570 polar (mine’s a 2010) as you, interesting back-story though was that mine was originally the black dial version but I did request a dial exchange when I put the watch in for servicing earlier this year. Rolex duly obliged (I had to pay £525 for the polar dial and associated handset) but interestingly I was allowed to keep the original black dial and associated handset (Rolex normally hang onto them because they don’t want genuine Rolex parts floating around in the wild in case they get used in franken watches. Enjoy the 16570 - it’s a great watch.
Annoyingly they didn’t say. Just said it’s sorted. That’s odd but as I always say these things happen. They are hand assembled mechanical things. Oh that’s good and yes I had heard it was a swap not a replacement with original parts back. My friend has a Kermit and it is lovely.
is your mic broken
No just an iPhone mic so is what it is
A great testimony to purchasing a used reference with Rolex warranty!
Indeed. People assume/think Rolex are bullet proof but all mechanics things can have issues. The warranty was a great thing to have with it.
Is there a way for manufacturer’s to test power reserve the same way they test accuracy? Would a low amplitude indicate a movement that isn’t getting a full wind?
They will be able to yes. I imagine like you say amplitude will vary as the watch is wound more so will be an indicator. Ultimately I imagine they wind it fully and see how it performs.
Did the previous owner ask Rolex not to do a polish on the watch since they assumed the buyer would prefer it that way? Either way looks so much better now!
Nope it was polished, just very badly!
Glad you got it sorted! Looks great and a rolex you can wear every day.
Hope the issues are resolved
They are thanks 👍
Shits so fake lmfao.
That is an extraordinarily handsome watch - so much to like. With such a weighty price tag I’d not feel bad about Zenith setting things right. I hope you get your gorgeous watch sorted.
Thank you and yes zenith resolved the issues and with superb customer service too. Which to be honest I would expect!
@@wheelsandwatches Good news. That was a pretty extensive list, so kudos to Zenith. Between your Zenith & JLC’s Polaris, I’m not sure there’s a more (near) perfect watch out there.
The Polaris is lovely. Especially the latest dual time model. The thing I love most about the zenith is the ceramic case. It still looks brand new. Not a single mark on it. To some that won’t matter but to me it means I wear and enjoy it more. It is also the most comfortable watch I have owned due to its weight and being on a rubber strap.
The rubber is definitely for water activities. Mine is finally softening up after YEARS of scuba diving, snorkeling, surfing, and just wearing it.
Beautiful!!
100% fake!
lol!
@ It is a fake one. And you know that.
@geertvoorwinden8924 if you say so.
@@wheelsandwatchescope
Who did you buy it from ?
I bought it from a dealer called ‘the Swiss link’. Great family owned business.
James seems to be a reasonable and know his neo vintage Rolex’s. Appears to be happy to do a deal if it means moving a piece on also! His vid with Brendan Boswell was interesting.
@ yes I would deal with them again. I can’t watch Brendon. He is a very jarring personality.
@@wheelsandwatches😂 best to jog on then 🤣
@johnrb9397 ha!
I love dive watches. Fit my life style. Dont dive, but wear them to work, and use the timing bezil daily. Kind of disappointing to see the quality contol issues. Not a cheap watch. Kind of cured my obsession with this watch for now by wearing my nos seiko shogun from 2008 for the last couple of days. Other than a 6r movement, very high quality. Also have an older jdm seiko samurai in ti. A remarkable case, watch. Bought a used 2011 Omega plant ocean in ti. Stunning older watch, no defects. Top diver in my collection.
Was this the light grey or black suede ? ❤️ The combo
It is grey.
The issue you’re having with your watch stopping, is exactly the same issue I currently have with my 16610LV Submariner Date. The watch is currently back with Rolex but the problem has occurred when the watch was serviced earlier this year by RSC in Kent.
Let me know if they provide and notes. I don’t believe they will though.
When looking from the outside it looks as if the slats are concave does that look ok as they should be convex. Could you of had small clear windows in some of the slats?
The doors reversed but it is not an issue. I asked this before instillation, no idea about clear windows didn’t ask.
To be honest I've gone totally off the boil on my quest to buy a Rolex sports watch. I actually felt the end I was grovelling to buy a watch in AD's. They can sod off. I'm looking at JLC's and Zenith
Yup, I have no intention of buying new from an AD so that made this a lot smoother in that regard. I love omega, zenith and IWC too. All great brands.
Fake Rolex and the neighbours car… Baller! 😂
