The TRAGIC Story of Emily Sotelo in The Deadly White Mountains
มุมมอง 239Kปีที่แล้ว
Mountains in North America are famous for their unpredictable snow storms and hazardous weather conditions. Mount Lafayette, the tallest peak in the Franconia Ridge, is one such mountain notorious for its rugged terrain. Although the mountain attracts a large number of tourists who hike the snowy trails in good weather, climbers avoid the mountain in bad weather because of the risks present. So...
Just the fact that Hollywood was involved and there’s no body. That town has countless stories to tell. Maybe somebody put baby oil on him or he took some pink cocaine?
I used to live in New Hampshire. I've climbed all the mountain ranges pretty much over my many years living there and visiting. Also in the winter. Now I live in Colorado. I've had a few close calls when I thought I wouldn't have a problem. Not really close calls but they could have been a problem. Have to be diligent in You're thinking when you're hiking or desert exploring. The unplanned happens sometimes.
Another inexperienced hiker who was unprepared. There are ten, (10), things you should keep in your backpack at ALL TIMES!
I knew that. Unfortunately, she didn't.
I guess to find him, send one of your Hawaiian ancestors to go up there maybe they can help too protect him!!!
I've read so much about Titan submersible, the people on the submersible... all i could say " Rest in peace to the 5 billionaires!"
I’ve lived in NH my whole life. Truly one of the most beautiful states in the country. So sadly, nature never holds back, so beautiful yet so brutal and dangerous. Rest in peace what a wonderful soul she seemed to be
Her mother sounds like a moron. Emily is not too bright either. DARWIN award winner!!! The mother should have told her this is a bad idea. But NOOOO. I have no sympathy for either one. Birds of a feather flock together.
You would not believe the amount of Massachusetts people New Hampshire has to rescue or recover in the White Mountains. They should just stay home.
She was a fool who died a fool's death
I cannot believe that Lee ended up in the same scenario as did Emily, who died in the same area a month earlier. Her death was all over the news and many rangers stated the importance of being properly dressed and prepared for these type of dangerous, off season hikes. If it takes an average of 8 hours to complete this trail in the summer time, under perfect conditions, he had no chance at all of completing this hike, during the daytime hours. Many hikers today still rely completely on theirs phones for information and communication, instead of providing the basic necessities needed. Many times there is no cell phone coverage in these remote areas and their phones become dead, in the process.
Right off of the bat, when the forecast was -27F to -35F that is too extreme to begin with and it is even colder with the higher elevations. She was completely unprepared in all aspects for this hike and paid the price in the end. Almost all of these hiking disasters are a result of being unprepared and/or complacent, which were the causes here. I am an adventure hikers myself and when I hiked in Siberia(-2F to -6F), I looked like an eskimo and have every important item with me, as well.
Black people are TARGETED & FOLLOWED... This man was abducted. Perhaps for his organs. He called his Dad the day before stating he was being followed. White people don't like educated successful black people. That man didn't run into no woods. SMDH 🙏🏾

don't know why my comment was deleted, but the rescuers are pathetic. They stopped searching just because nightfall came. god forbid you dont sleep one night and are cold. It's New Hampshire, not the Himalayas.
She was just down right not prepared with the right equipment. It's completely her fault and she went alone that's the wrong thing to do in the first place. What a waste of a young beautiful woman. So sad. My heart goes out to the family. RIP sweetie...
So sad but this tragedy could have been easily avoided had common sense prevailed.
In NH in winter it can go way below zero. Make sure your gear has ratings to minus 20!
He was running because he was being chased. Something startled this man and he was not having a mental breakdown. There is something very sinister about this story. The wait time alone ( to report him missing) tells me something was done to him. There are to many weird things happening in National Forest these days.

👍
He didn’t galvanize the metal or rough it up with a grinder before applying the sealants, but I think he also went cheap & used Elmers Glue. Why would a billionare go cheap? To make sure it didn't resurface.
It strikes me that in every one of the many, many videos I've seen with tragic stories, the victims are ALWAYS outstanding, cheerful, and widely-beloved. Not one "Eh, who cares? Dude was an insufferable jerk anyway." Tragedy seems to give a pass to a lot of jackasses that need it.
Boje pomoje ....…..
8 hours? For who? A paraplegic? It doesn't take 8 hours.
I recently did this exact loop but up Falling Waters and down Bridal. Definitely not for beginners not only for length but especially in winter your completely exposed on that ridge. If weather rolls in you could be in big trouble.
Simply go in a Submarine. This Titan was a gross tragedy.
I grew up in the White Mountains ON a mountain, and that entire area is definitely treacherous, especially in the winter and early spring.. I've been up Mt. Washington a half dozen times and every time you needed a winter jacket in the middle of July and August. 90 degrees at the base and 40 at the summit, sometimes even snow and ice mid-summer. There are also tons of very *strange* things that happen around there of almost every variety you can think of. Obey and respect the land here. It was and still is very sacred to many people.
Why are you showing the mist trail?
I have no idea where you are getting the temp readings of -27 to -35F. Those kind of sub-zero temps are actually quite rare and never in November which is still Autumn and not winter. Normal November temps are above freezing during the day and below freezing at night. Conditions can change quickly but anyone with an AM radio or smart phone can stay ahead of bad weather. The White Mountains can be harsh but this is not Alaska. The real lesson here is that temps from 27 to 35 above F can be plenty deadly for the ill prepared who get lost and get wet. *THAT* is the real killer. Let her tragedy please save others. Please double-check your facts on this one.
Being that I'm from that area I was wicked confused when he said that, and my first thought was that he was probably saying the Celsius version because I noticed he was also saying meters.
Stupid is as stupid does
"Minus 35 degrees below zero" is redundant. Either "35 below zero" or "Minus 35 degrees".
That's like someone saying unthaw when they want to thaw something
the way i see it, stockton offers a service, the clients, saw the tin can soda can, and willingly crawled on board knowing full well, that death was bound to happen. everyone has no one to blame, but themselves.
Unfounded confidence and lack of respect of how quickly nature can make you dead at elevation (the steeper/higher the elevation the greater the potential energy you are facing) is a dangerous combination (a U.S. Recon Marine vet. who went thru Navy SERE in the White Mountains of Vermont/New Hampshire and Mountain Survival Training in the Sierra Nevada's).
I'm a now old retired Aerospace Engineer but in my youth I was a U.S. Recon Marine who went thru SERE training in the White Mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire...once you get above the tree line at altitude, you can get dead quick if you don't have the necessary gear or the knowledge/skill to use it properly.
Winter hiking in the White Mountains is completely different than during the summer. November is close enough to winter in the White Mountains..there is skiing already up there
I remember when this happened. I was working with an avid hiker and I remember hearing she was missing on the radio and right away he said, “she’s dead.” Every year this type of stuff happens in the white mountains. I’m making this comment in august and a 72 year old man was very recently found dead on mount Washington. Only wearing a raincoat and jeans. So the weather on these mountains is nothing to be taken lightly at any time of the year.
I went thru Navy SERE (Survival Evasion Resistance Escape) School as a U.S. Force Recon Marine in the 70's in the White Mountains near Brunswick Maine...she sounds like she was an experienced expedition hiker so I don't understand why she was so unprepared, but the White Mountains in any season will make you dead quick if the weather catches you off guard and unprepared.
If you get a feeling things aren't right on your journey, the best thing you can do is swallow your pride and turn around, there is no shame in it and our great summits are not going anywhere!!
Goes to show how "the educated" are just a bunch of morons.
Little Emily ? A grown woman . not a child.
Who’s to say that Rush didn’t have a hidden gun on board for this very reason?
It wasn't 20 below zero on Thanksgiving
To have this kind of accident in year 2023 really shows how unprofessionnal was Ocean Gate.
Our mountains are beautiful and unpredictable.
That's probably the weirdest thing I've ever heard. He just got up, ran down a cliff and into the woods, never to be seen again? Can't they access his phone records?
Black people are TARGETED & FOLLOWED... This man was abducted. Perhaps for his organs. He called his Dad the day before stating he was being followed. White people don't like educated successful black people. That man didn't run into no woods. SMDH 🙏🏾
It ceases to amaze me when you hear these stories how so under prepared these people are especially in mid winter in exposed places ..
The kid fell got hurt. Those other hikers heard him calling for help. Why they left or didn't look better is being me
Solo hike, 11am start, Winter, ... what could go wrong? Geezus.
It is totally unbelievable that a family of bright accomplished people had a 3 person total of zero common sense.
I have hike Franconia ridge a few times and not in the winter. One time thunderheads can in when I had only 3 hours into the hike. I turned around and waiting until the next day to start it again. I always have laminated maps with me. I always have a sweater, gloves & hat, and a wind breaker jacket. It might be 80 in the valley but 40 with 35 MPH winds at the top on the ridge. Same with the Presidential Range.
