Just to put this video in context, the studio version of Echoes is a single track that makes up the whole of side 2 of the album "Meddle". But Live at Pompeii was recorded to be a film shown in cinema's, so it was decided that they would split the track into 2, and have them appear as the first and last tracks in the film, with a number of other tracks in between.

Echoes is as good an epic as anyone ever came up with and good to see you watch part 2, very trippy to say the least, Gilmour sat on the stage at Boston Garden for this first part, he was next to his special effects rack and took us on a space psychedelic journey. Great song no matter the version but you do need to hear the studio original, it is their perfect audio exploration and needs to be experienced. Also of note is when David Gilmour went a his On An Island solo tour in 2006, he brought Rick Wright from Floyd on keyboards and they did Echoes, a great, extended version (26 minutes) is at the Gdansk concert at the docks where the Polish freedom movement in the 80s emerged, it in incredible show in another setting only Pink Floyd would play at. Do watch that sometime. Lastly, they also played a great show on a barge in the canals of Venice Italy. Search for that when you can, another amazing Floyd concert setting, people everywhere! Enjoy. 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶🔥

The Meddle album came out in early 1971. Someone visited Pompeii and decided it was the perfect location to perform the album. The Italian government and local authorities said okay, but no audience allowed. So......they joined a lot of electricity leeds together to take power from the nearest farm house, plugged in, and performed the whole Meddle album live, to the ghosts of the fallen gladiators and Christians......this was 1971 . In 1972 they released the live album / soundtrack. 1973 they released the movie.

The whole Meddle album? Um no. They performed many PF early tracks including two from Meddle. Three if you count Mademoiselle Nobs as an instrumental version of Seamus. Pink Floyd has never performed Pillow of Winds, Fearless, or San Tropez live. Also they never released a soundtrack of this until the Early Years box set.

I have seen Pink Floyd Live 4 times… I saw this same show Syracuse Carrier Dome in N.Y. 1994. The concert brochure said the stage is 120 feet wide. It takes a crew of 60 technicians three days to set up the entire lights and all. The concert schedule required that there had to be three entire crews to keep up. They leap froged each other for 92 shows with 20 Trucks per crew and a total staff of 195. The tour cost the promoters $98.MILLION to put on, but the total profit was $260 MILLION. Nick Mason’s drumming is incredible and matches Gilmour’s guitar emotions while Richard Wright takes us on a Magic Carpet Ride of tones that form the foundation of it all. When the “Disco Ball’ was uncovered and the lights hit it….. WHAT IS HAPPENING was what I said….The entire crowd was held in a trace and our minds totally blown by what we witnessed. I sparked up my pipe for this reaction, as I do to all Pink Floyd songs. Thanks

Is this song about death or dying?…. No. I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. We could not tell the singer so as to avoid her making any comments that would end up in the media. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at the studio prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The doorman stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Richard Wright only wrote the music for a different project prior to the songs concept ever being thought of which was the results of Gilmour being asked if P.F. would ever do a song about religion Results are legendary.

I seen this on a Blog which puts some weight behind your story. "Great Gig In the Sky began as chord progression composed by Pink Floyd keyboard player Rick Wright, Which the band referred to as “The Mortality Sequence” or “The Religion Song”, Before the band recorded Dark Side of The Moon, they performed the song live as an organ instrumental accompanied by spoken word samples from the Bible, and clips of religious speeches by conservative British writer Malcolm Muggeridge, By the time they went into the studio to record it in 1973, they had replaced guitar as the lead instrument with a piano, Then, after tinkering with recordings of NASA astronauts communicating on space missions, they decided to bring Clare Torry in to record vocals." I love the reactions Angelisa, Keep them coming, Love from the UK.

The soundbites were people around the studio asked questions on cards and their answers were recorded for the album. Paul McCartney was apparently recorded since he was there recording with Wings but never made it onto the album. The sentence was ' I am not frightened of dying...why should I be ?. There's no reason for it, you've got to go sometime'. Three singers do the live version but on the album, its all Clare Torrey.

And the spoken part is by a guy who worked at the studio. "I am not frightened of dying. Any time will do, I don't mind. Why should I be frightened of dying? There's no reason for it. Great choice for a reaction! Welcome to the Pink Floyd rabbit hole. The only line of lyrics in "One Of These Days" ("One of these days, I'm going to cut you into little pieces!") supposedly refers to a DJ at the BBC back in the band's early days, whom they felt talked way too much. Pink Floyd, as you experienced yourself, are masters of sound. They were experts at mixing sound from back when you edited magnetic recording tape with razor blades and editing blocks. The thought was expressed that one day, the lengthy stretch of mag tape containing this DJ's unending comments would be edited to remove his voice, and he would end up in pieces on the cutting room floor. Hence, the lyric. Supposedly. That long, frankly boring stretch in the middle where the bass noodles around while lasers project boring circles in the background, was used, during part of the tour, to project a sponsor's logo on the stage's background. It may have been simpler to just plan around the logo being projected for some contractually-required number of seconds, at the required number of shows, and then just project the circles in it's place for the rest of the shows for the remainder of the tour. Finally, I had the pleasure of seeing this tour, and this song probably gives you the best idea of what it was like to be there, and get blown out of your seat by the incredible light show. It was like this all night long. What an incredible tour. You can literally choose any song from the PULSE Concert, and know that the audio will be impeccable, as you've seen, and the visuals will be incredible. I hope you choose more PULSE songs to react to. If I may suggest, try "Time", or "Wish You Were Here", or the night's finale, "Run Like Hell".

Glad you love Pink Floyd, and David Gilmour. He has a new album, the first two songs have been released, maybe you can react to them, the first one he released was 'The Pipers Call", and just recently he released "Between Two Points" with vocals by his daughter Romany Gilmour, The videos are very well done and certainly worth a look.

Many people mistakenly think this is about Syd Barrett, but in an interview Roger Waters said quite emphatically that the only song on the WYWH album that was about Syd was "Shine on you crazy diamond". He went on to say that when he wrote the lyrics to "Wish You Were Here" he had in mind someone close who had refused to move on in life and had been left behind. He also said that at other times it meant something else, and that some days he didn't really know what it meant himself. He deliberately made the lyrics enigmatic so that the listener could make them mean whatever they wanted them to mean, and they have become an anthem for anyone who has lost someone close to them. David Gilmour has said that he often thinks of Syd when he's performing it, even though it wasn't written about him. The opening guitar chords were composed by David Gilmour who had in mind someone channel hopping on a poor quality radio all alone in their bedroom late at night, and upon hearing the guitar joining in himself with the crisper sound of the second guitar. Overall, a stunningly beautiful composition, both instrumentally and lyrically, and a work of complete genius. I associate it with someone very close and special that I lost long ago and it never fails to bring a tear to my eye.
