The Great Gig follows Time on the album, because it is the end of our TIME.....the 5 stages of death. From denial, to fear, to anger, to confusion then finally peaceful acceptance.
The soundbites were people around the studio asked questions on cards and their answers were recorded for the album. Paul McCartney was apparently recorded since he was there recording with Wings but never made it onto the album. The sentence was ' I am not frightened of dying...why should I be ?. There's no reason for it, you've got to go sometime'. Three singers do the live version but on the album, its all Clare Torrey.
Hi ..your reactions are great and your emotions are nothing to be ashamed of..I a not sure if you have reacted to Coming Back To Life also from the Pulse Concert..highly recommended..from Sol in Cape Town..
Be sure to check out the original studio version with Clare Torry. She's the one who originally improvised the vocal after some rather vague instructions from the Floyd. And the spoken part is by a guy who worked at the studio. "I am not frightened of dying. Any time will do, I don't mind. Why should I be frightened of dying? There's no reason for it. You've got to go sometime." th-cam.com/video/2PMnJ_Luk_o/w-d-xo.html
Is this song about death or dying?…. No. I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. We could not tell the singer so as to avoid her making any comments that would end up in the media. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at the studio prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The doorman stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Richard Wright only wrote the music for a different project prior to the songs concept ever being thought of which was the results of Gilmour being asked if P.F. would ever do a song about religion Results are legendary.
I seen this on a Blog which puts some weight behind your story. "Great Gig In the Sky began as chord progression composed by Pink Floyd keyboard player Rick Wright, Which the band referred to as “The Mortality Sequence” or “The Religion Song”, Before the band recorded Dark Side of The Moon, they performed the song live as an organ instrumental accompanied by spoken word samples from the Bible, and clips of religious speeches by conservative British writer Malcolm Muggeridge, By the time they went into the studio to record it in 1973, they had replaced guitar as the lead instrument with a piano, Then, after tinkering with recordings of NASA astronauts communicating on space missions, they decided to bring Clare Torry in to record vocals." I love the reactions Angelisa, Keep them coming, Love from the UK.

Oh I see thanks for that info
The song Great Gig in the Sky is about dying. The first part is the final fight for life until the lull, then acceptance of the inevitable.
Thanks for the info
