United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 9 ส.ค. 2016
Welcome to The Grit and Polish! We’re Garrett and Cathy Poshusta, the husband and wife duo behind the Grit and Polish, a home design and renovation blog. Renovation is a family affair for us Poshustas and we take on old houses in Washington state with our 3 kids in tow. Following Cathy’s vision for natural, timeless design, we transform tired spaces into welcoming, family-friendly, and inspiring homes. As hardened DIY’ers, we perform the lion’s share of the work ourselves. This allows us to use a craft-as-you-go approach that integrates old character with modern amenities. The end result is an old house with new life!

Cleaning Hard Water Rings Off Marble
มุมมอง 30K2 ปีที่แล้ว
We have hard water and dark rings developed on the marble counter around our bathroom faucet. I decided to clean the rings off while replacing the faucet. Luckily these rings did not stain into the marble and they were removed with a metal scrubber and some Bon Ami cleaner. Our marble is honed so I didn't have to worry about scratching a polished surface. If you try this, double check that it i...

Weed Control with a Torch
มุมมอง 20K3 ปีที่แล้ว
We are battling weeds all through the growing season at our Farmhouse. We don't use herbicides so that leaves pulling, cutting and now also using a torch. We're mostly just trying to keep them from spreading rather than complete elimination and the JT850 outdoor torch is really handy for spot weed control, especially in areas like our garden patio. This video is sponsored by Bernzomatic and you...

Be very careful. This can actually damage marble. I did it and left it on for maybe an hour and it etched white dry acid stain look wider than the initial acid stain.
Marble is susceptible to etching by acids but solutions at or above pH 7 are safe for marble. A solution of baking soda in water is about pH 8 making it a very safe, no risk option for stain removal.
@@TheGRITandPolish Well, it appears that in some situations that is incorrect, because as I said todayI found a white semicircle blemish on the marble bench top. I applied a pasts of bicarb and water. and left it for an hour or so. After wiping it off, the white dry looking blemish was extended out to where the bicarb paste sat. Not as white as the original blemish but still obviously there. The damaged marble looked dried out and crystal like. The area was smooth, but dry and very mat looking. I intuitively applied several applications of an oil and it fixed the original issue and the damage from the bicarb.
Yup still there 4 years later
hi there, I have some yellowish stain on my bathroom white colored marble. will this solution work on it? what you think?
Hello! It depends on what caused the yellow stain in the first place. This works really well for stains that are from organic sources like different foods, coffee, wine etc. But some stains originate from chemical processes within the marble itsself and it won't do anything fro those. In anycase it's always worth a try because it's so gentle it won't do any harm. You can also try using hydrogen peroxide instead of water for a more powerful stain remover.
Chocolate is darker than black...interesting...
Mine straight up just fell off when I opened it. It won’t go back on. What the hell do I do lmao
Look fro some holes around the edge of your dishwasher door on the inside. The screws holding the panel to the door may have loosened and come out overtime.
What’s the width of hood vent? 30”? Thanks
Yes it is a 30". if you follow the link in the description, there's a full list with links to the items used in the project including hood vent so you can get precise specs including dimensions.
How much does your hood weigh? Mine is 36” wide and is 18 lbs. I noticed you didn’t screw support frames into back wall or ceiling like other videos I’ve seen. Thanks
Wartching several weed burnning videos...no one addresses "how burned" the weed has to be to kill it and the roots. Does the plant have to be consummed, or just heated? Toasted, charred, wilted? Completely burning the plant takes a lot of propane.
can you let the man talk for God's sake?? and why is she even here, changing faucets is clearly not her job to do here,, and interupting omg, he is so patient,, congrats
Did you attach that to the face frame? or is that the corner bracing on the cabinets?
This one is through the face frame. But the corner braces are another spot you could use.
Great video, one thing that I would say is never use marble for a counter top.....
Well I think it depends on what you value in your counter top. If you want something that looks the same as the day it's installed 20 years later, then marble isn't a good option. Personally, I like how marble gains a unique patina overtime that reflects the rhythms of life in the kitchen.
Oh my god so much yapping and such little content. Shut up, no one wants to listen to you jabber on.
Thank you
Ewww so how do you clean germs...just water?
You can disinfect however you like then reapply the oil
Thank you for saving me hours of research! I like your presentation style. Good work! 😃
Glad it was helpful!
How did you attach the sprayer cradle.?
I drilled through the fiberglass and then used a long screw to reach the wood framing behind the sink.
So so dreamy!!!
Would this work as well with marble shower tile where some have a tan color to them? Also, what do you recommend for cleaner/sealer?
This will work best when the stains are from an organic source like tea. Sometimes the marble can have iron inside that turns a bit red/tan overtime and this won't do anything for that.
Do you mind resharing the link to the panels used? Link in blog post seems to be broken. Thanks!
Here's that product for you www.metrie.com/products/moulding/1689914
Thank you very much!
Where did you get the pulleys etc?
Links to all of the materials we used including the pulleys are available in the blog post linked in the description. However you should be able to find them at your local hardware store as well.
Try a mixture of flour, water and liquid soap.
Anything that doesn't require fire?
You could certainly just cut the fabric out instead of using the torch
I don’t know what kind of stain i have. It’s dark grey . Possibly from a cleaning bottle left on counter. Any suggestion what to use?
Start with this simple recipe and try a couple applications. If you don't notice any difference, try with mineral spirits instead of water.
Will this method erase water stains?
Water marks should evaporate on their own within a day or so depending on the environment. You can speed the process using a hair dryer or fan if needed. If they don't go away then there's likely something else besides water, such as an oil, in the marble.
Hoe do you keep the coop run clean with the rock?
It's easy to wash it away since it drains well
❤
Very Cool! What shop is making this butcher block?
Hardwood Industries makes the best butcher block! www.hardwoodind.com/
This topic should have included the type of landscape fabric used, in this case, woven fabric.
Marble floor with small kids and pets, it's white but it is HIGH maintenance can't just vacuum and acasional shampooing. It's impossible to stay clean but I love how it looks and I'll keep sweeping and moping every morning afternoon and night.
thank you! so helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
I realize this video was posted a while ago but I am wondering how you dug out the channels?
Yes the contractor used a skid-steer with a custom implement that had a piece of w-flange steel that was extendable with a scoop on the end to dig out beam channels underneath the house.
Hey how did you insert the bracket into the dishwasher before screwing it all together? You skipped that in the video and I’m having trouble using the bracket to keep it in place
So in the case of this specific Blomberg model, the plastic bracket has four different "hooks" on one side that slide into catches on the dishwasher door. You can see them as the dark grey rectangles at the beginning of the video.
OMG get rid of the women. LET THE MAN TALK.
I am seeing this quote a bit after you posted it, however if you happen to see this and can offer suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. We have engineered marble countertops in our bathroom. I’m not sure what the stain is as it is pink and we don’t use anything pink. The only thing I can think of is that it is from one of my skincare products and there was a reaction with the light. The surface over the stain is slightly rough, so I’m worried it is etched in… we have soft water, it is high in iron, but it doesn’t look like iron stains. Any recommendations would be tremendous appreciated.
Dang so sorry to hear that! Yes if the surface is rough it typically means it's been etched. But you may still have some luck removing the pink color. First try the poultice with hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. It may take a few applications to remove it completely. But if the hydrogen peroxide haas no affect, try making the poultice with mineral spirits and baking soda. This will remove stains that are hydrophobic and prefer a non-poplar environment.
We sale this Landscape/garden fabric with holes
DO you have a link for the bracket?
So that bracket came with the dishwasher and will be unique to each manufacturer/model. Also although the bracket is helpful for aligning the door, you don't actually need it. You can use a couple clamps to hold the panel in place while you fasten it.
could you have a butcher block with a sink?
We have done a couple sinks both undermount and overmount in butcher blocks and I wouldn't recommend it. It's just hard to keep the water off them all the time around the sink.
@@TheGRITandPolish thank you so much!
What a waste of time
I don’t have a Brad nailer so I’ll be drilling it to the wall, should I drill into the studs or avoid studs?
I would definitely try to screw through the backplate and into at least one stud if you can!
Straight to the point, I like it.
So simple so stylin. Thank you 🏆
Glad you like it!
Love this. Thanks for posting
Glad you enjoyed it!
important stuff starts at 2:28
That's a smart idea. I've been looking to get one of these and though they've come down in price by a ton, at least in the UK, I'm loathe to ever spend money I don't have to. I've also got a whole bunch of stainless steel strapping hanging around which I could repurpose and spray black. Will definitely be giving this a try. Thanks.
Awesome you'll love it!
How many acres? ❤❤
3 acres : )
You look like Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter
I guess that's better than Crabb!
If you rout the end grain first, you won't get tear out at the corners.
Thanks for the tip Lawrence!
Marble my favorite❤
Ours too...!!
I have been looking for a diy like this, I’m very happy I found it and very excited about building my own..GRACIAS
So glad you found it helpful!
Thank you I moved in my in law Basement that has butcher block but it was never sealed I was given some home made thing and now all my butcher block has mold and it won’t come out
You can wash the butcher block with a solution of 10% bleach to sterilize. Let the bleach water soak into the wood for ~15min and then wipe it dry. This will kill all the mold. Let the block dry overnight then the next day you can decide if you want to sand it out or just proceed to sealing with a wax/oil or something more durable like a polyurethane.
