Odd, the description on this video is blank.
Oh no! Thanks for pointing it out. I added it to all the older videos! It's there now
@@HappyLittleDiodes thanks :)! That oscilloscope piqued my interest!
Cher! Lovey video, nice little repair
It's lovely that you go back to the roots and keep the basic Tests in now and again so that new viewers can get a graap. Also, i like when you do a deep dive and do t blindly go for what the diagnostic tools say! :-) Well done, mate!
To anyone else who installed this kit, is it just me, or is the keypress effort really high and inconsistent? I played around with the fastener torques and got some improvement in consistency. The enter key went from painfully unusable anywhere away from the top right corner, to somewhat tolerable along the entire right hand side. I'm guessing some of this is down to the aging bubble mat? It also doesn't help that the keyboard never had stabilizers on the Enter and Caps Shift keys.
Try different bubble mats, it made a big difference for me to have a less "tired" mat
I think that r2d2 is supposed to lean back more, I’ve had this same issue before.
Lovely diction and flow throughout the video. I bought a pair of ceramic tweezers from Retroleum which are a great replacement for the screwdriver :)
So cute!
fit a bluetooth inside so you can load games from the phone
That is a very good book. I remember reading front to back in the 80’s. I can’t find my copy anymore though.

Why don't you go deeper and fix the internal leakage between the memory cells? 😂

i've had a difficult to find ram issue in a timex sinclair ts1016 rampack(for ts1000 or zx81), i usually test these behind a memotech 16k set to master so the test ram is out of the normal address space, so not(hopefully) affecting booting, it tested ok poking 170 then 85 in each location, but wouldnt work on its own on a machine, it'd boot but quickly crash when entering program lines, or even trying to read ramtop system variable, when doing random value pokes then read, there was occasional failures all on bit 2, so one 4116 a bit suspect
Sounds quite similar to this case. I built my own ram tester breadboard once but it only wrote values to each and read them back, it certainly wouldn't have found this issue
@@HappyLittleDiodes the 'usual' easy BASIC test of 85 then 170 showed no problems, but random value pokes to locations in turn then reading (using RAND 1 before each pass to ensure same lot of random numbers) resulted in odd failures of bit 2, sometimes high when should be low, sometimes opposite!
Have you checked that memory kept values for a longer time than a few seconds? Back in the days I did not get 4132, so I had to buy 4164 for expansion. For curiosity I tried a simple mod using a manual toggle switch, but half of memory lost data while being not selected due to lack of refresh. Update: I just learned that some 4164 need 256 refresh cycles, whereas others only require 127 refresh cycles.
The other video I did on these has a mod to account for the larger refresh cycles, although it seemed too slow for the refresh requirements it seemed to work, seemed a bit hooky to me though!
That is indeed, a great book. I still frequently refer to it, as well as Rodney Zaks' masterpiece.
First time seeing a bit deeper checking on the diagnosing on the memory
The issue 2 I repaired two years ago has lost its 9v 😢
9V? That's the PSU then right?
@ from the psu is fine. Diag board shows no 9v and won’t boot. Think it’s tr4&5
@@Doombrain tr4 and 5 generate the +12 and -5v bear in mind a shorted tr4 can damage the coil, not blowing it open but causing shorted turns due to overheating, this cant be tested by resistance checks, only way to know for sure is replacing, or remove and rewind using 30swg enamelled copper wire
@ it’s got a tracko in now
Check the schematic, see the path from 9V to the edge connector, something along that path must be open circuit or pulling 9V out of tolerance
Awesome explanation, magnificent moustache. 10/10
👕
🌵
Update! The machine has now had a full service and is good to go 🎉
😊
2:00 wow this is one sick scheme. c1 to c4 is shorted, and -5 is shorted to ground, all by design
😂 the schematics have their issues, they should have represented the decoupling caps a bit better
Yeah you're right - it shows the 0V and -5V shorted together at 2:10. I think that 22nf cap at the bottom needs to move to the left.
"Trump's turn" - I laughed my head off 😅

Super-informative. Even I could follow this 👍 Is that Lee's old desoldering tool?
Yes it is! Super handy for jobs like this
good job
Cheers!
What about using a sip module socket to allow for more 64KB of RAM.
The second 80k mod I looked at was apparently scalable, you could compress it all into a smaller package. The nucleon 512k machine has a good solution with it all on one chip
How do you see the SD Card from the keyboard?
It depends on the firmware you're using. Tecnocat has been busy making improvements and sharing with us in the discord, including English instructions. Try v0.96.15
Superglue is probably the worst adhesive you could have used to glue that onto a PCB. Its too brittle for something so weighty and you need something more flexible to act as a shock absorber.

I decided to build the Jason Yang PCB that's in the repository, but need to know what is in the BOM for this board?
I can't find it myself, but you could try contacting via their GitHub github.com/JasonYANG170
that little hole is the "Area Redaction Sinewave Expansion Hole " hee he e
Taxi!
Thank you. I wonder why the original ULA had separate handlers when one could do both jobs? Seems rather un-Sinclair like.
Maybe some limitation of the modular construction of the ULA? I'm not sure! The ULA book may have some insight

Very interesting fault. Well diagnosed!
I'm new to KiCAD - are there Gerber files available for this?
He doesn't provide the gerber files, only the kicad projects so you can generate your own using KICAD, to the specific requirements of the manufacturer you want to use (I think Kicad has pre-configured settings for bigger manufacturers?). Pop in to the discord if you like, some members have generated gerbers they can share with you
Use a flux paste. You don’t have to hold the components while you solder them. Once you get the hang of it it’s far quicker than through hole. You can place several components at a time.
I want some, but have loads of flux pens to get through and don't want to waste them
I'm gonna go back & watch from the beginning now 😊 👀
Why is this video called part 6 ? In the playlist there's only 5 videos
I might have messed up the playlist, I'll have a look today
Use flux. Soldering works exponentially better with flux.
Flux has improved my life a lot since making this video
@@HappyLittleDiodes 🤣 funny, but true.
Enjoyed the video very much, although I kept yelling "too much solder paste!" at my computer screen. I had to learn that in the same way, too! What is everyone using for the probes? Any working better than others? I'm about to spring for the latest 6.0 version pcb (I already have a pico 2 in hand!) & start the project.
I'm pretty sure that the User definable characters should get mangled when you switch. And what about the stack, isn't it stored in the upper RAM? Hands off to you for this video!
The stack is an issue, the next video is for a mod which seems to address this
Getting pretty good with that solder paste 👍 How come you didn't feature on Lee's Befriending event this past weekend? Was hoping to see you at some point.
I've been a bit out of the loop with building work going on at home, but yes I should get more involved!

What capacitors did you use for C11, C12, C14, C15? On schema they are polarized, but in BOM those are listed as 0805 format.
Nice video, you're looking much more confident with the SMD parts, thanks for sharing your progress - I would have been waay to shy to show my early SMD attempts on the internets!
MOSI Master Out Slave In connects to TX on pico MiSO Master In Slave Out connects to RX on pico. Think i would use an example SD card sketch to test that its working. According to the pinout, sd card CS to pin 5, MISO pin 4 MOSI pin 3 CLK to pin2.
Great video. Got myself a Pi Pico and looking forward to running it as a ZX-Spectrum.
Let us know how it goes!
Loving this. I really like the option of surface and through hole components. I would love a spare board. I am in the UK. have messaged you on Discord.
