Cyperus Oil - Is it SAFE? | Toxicologist answer
Well, hello! I'm Mo, a toxicologist and risk assessor. In today's video, I delve into the safety of Cyperus oil-the viral sensation touted as a natural hair removal miracle. But is it really safe to use? Should you be applying it to your skin?
With limited data available, I conducted my own safety assessment focusing on hazard identification and exposure risk. Using molecular docking software and skin absorption models, I analyzed the main compounds in Cyperus oil-Cyperene and β-Selinene-to see how they interact with the body's androgen receptors and whether they can penetrate the skin to reach systemic circulation.
What I discovered raises important concerns about the potential health risks associated with this oil, including possible implications for hormonal balance and even cancer risk. I also discuss why it's crucial to critically evaluate advice from online influencers and understand the science behind products before using them.
Join me as I break down the findings of my three-week investigation, explaining each step in accessible terms. By the end of this video, you'll have a clearer understanding of whether Cyperus oil is a safe choice for you.

What brand were you using?
Experts out of their field of expertise lol.
I am disappointed but not surprised. Perhaps the compounds will be isolated and the research that comes out of it will result in safe products to be used for hair growth reduction, here’s to hoping! Edit: Can you look into tiger nut oil next? I saw some people recommending it for the same purpose of slowing hair growth, looking at a meta analysis about it briefly it seems as though it’s pretty different chemically than Cyperus oil so I’m interested to know the potential toxicity from your perspective. Honestly probably a silly question since it’s edible, but I’d still like to hear your thoughts or how exactly it may work.
Thanks for your professional answers. I would like to have more data either mostly about what happen during the time spicules remain on the skin before they go away with dead cells..do they cover too much the skin? Or they may occlude pores?
Which one is best for sunburn??
Thank you for sorting wheat from chaff for us.
Hi Mo! I am here from Dr Wong’s TH-cam video, debunking the myth of a video of a toxicologist on the channel of Diary of a CEO. Thank you for explaining things so succinctly in your video! Commenting so your videos get more reach. Thanks for doing this :)
Thank you so much brother❤❤
This side of TH-cam is.....❤
MashaAllah, lab muffin mentiond you. Good work brother
Really appreciate you putting all this together! When I first heard the claims, I was skeptical. Seeing your videos on the topic (and the controversy, oh my!), was super helpful. Thank you!! - signed, new subscriber
Thanks for making this video! I hope you have a chance to review the toxicologist interview from the diary of a CEO :) I feel like she is truly trying to do whats best but might be jumping the gun on some accusations as there needs to be a lot more research. She might feel super justified bc she deduced that toxins were the cause for her infertility and doesn't want others to experience that harm, which I get, but her science seems clouded. It's hard to see nuance when you've been personally affected and are trying to save others. For example, she acknowledges that there needs to be more research, but continues to make suggestions and seems to imply that if we find correlation, it's proof of causation. I'd love to see where you agree and disagree with her. I was pretty surprised she didn't talk about the pollution of gas stoves, which I'd think is the #1 pollutant at home. Maybe she did and I just missed it
Agree 💯
Interesting and in a way fascinating
Thank you. Very informative! Is this ingredient on the product label listed beneath active or inactive ingredients?

Commenting for the algorithm
I just used Uriage and it gave me a tingle, as long as I Don breakout I am kool. I normally use La roche possay
This is a fantastic video with great information. Science FTW! Michelle from Lab Muffin told her viewers about your channel-- very happy to be here. 🙂
Yeah i dont care if is natural, if a sustance has this absorption and potencial of system distribution withouth having proper studies to back it up , is scary. Thanks for doing all this hard work, i dont like magical compunds that come from no where, also is kind of dissapointing seeing a doctor with a huge platform suggesting the use of chemicals withouth backing
Thankfully, I saw yours and lab muffins posts. I ordered this oil because a certain dermatologist said there was no harm in trying it. Meanwhile, I’ve been going through hormone positive breast cancer treatment for the last two years. And I was about to start slathering this “Non-harmful” oil all over my skin every day when I’m supposed to be suppressing my 100% estrogen and progesterone positive breast cancer. Had I not known and started using this regularly there was a possibility of my cancer coming raging back at stage four and giving me a death sentence. And I don’t care how high or low that possibility was, it’s certainly not worth it. The unopened oil just went into the garbage where it belongs. Thanks to you and lab muffin for potentially saving my life! And there’s one more TH-cam influencer I no longer trust. But you have a new follower in me, and my own TH-cam channel Chronicles my breast cancer journey completely uncensored through every step of the process. Once I edit and upload a few more videos, the moderators in the many breast cancer forums will officially launch my channel and be posting and offering my channel as a resource for other women in the forums who need support and guidance. And now I plan to do a specific video on the dangers of Cyprus oil, and I hope it is alright if I leave a link to your video. I think that especially women with breast cancer or who have had breast cancer absolutely need to know this information since this oil has gone viral. Once again, you have my deepest respect and thanks ❤
Thanks for all the good work 👏
Thank you too!
very clear. upfront and unbiased review. great content. I have subscribed to your channel to get more useful information. Thank you !
I used it once and am now paranoid. I threw it out. Would the risk be fairly low for one time use? I also applied after using an essence so hope that buffered
I loved seeing the tools and software you used to model potential hazards and absorption! Thank you for this peek behind the curtain!
Thank you for all your research and for using your expertise to find out its potential risks 👨💻 Commenting for the algorithm too; this vid needs more views!
The “everything is full of toxic chemicals” crowd when they see an essential oil with shady studies behind it:😩🥴🥰🙂↕️💦
You did a very good job and it is wild that this video doesn’t have more views. Comment for the god of algorithms
Great job Mo! Can't praise you enough for the amount of work you have done to bring such in-depth information to us!
Hi Mo, I also encourage you to look at this ABC News (Australia) report... I don't want to insert a link, but just Google this..."'Unbelievable': Oncologist questions claims of 'doctor' lauded by Elle Macpherson". Especially, as this 'doctor' has made claims of being a toxicologist . This exposé came out only days after I was sick of getting pop-up ads for Elle Mc Pherson's 'wellness' drink; and I (out of curiosity & healthy suspicion) wanted to see what she was spruking, so looked at the website. At first I was laughing at the poorly written content etc. I then showed my partner and told him that the algorithms couldn't be more wrong to think that I would be interested in this. My laughter then turned to anger when I saw that it was making all these product claims, including having health benefits "against all odds"! What...against science?! A few days later my partner asked me whether I had told ABC news about this (which I actually hadn't), as he saw that coincidentally the ABC were doing an indepth report into this product; and Elle Mc Pherson's 'doctor' friend, who she enlisted to give supposed credibility to her 'wellness' drink brand. Elle Mc Pherson became famous in Australia as a young model wearing a red bikini in a "Tab" diet drink TV commercial. Perhaps wearing a "red flag" may be more appropriate this season? Congratulations Mo & Michelle for dedication to science & integrity. I always knew that both of you weren't just pretty faces! 👱❤️
Thank you so much for your hard work putting this together. I am so annoyed that I purchased the oil thinking the recommendation was reliable. Luckily it took a while to be delivered so I saw yours and Michelle's concerns before receiving it. It's going in the bin now. What a waste of money and resources.
Thanks Mo! You're an amazing person. Your effort towards educating people is appreciated! Thank you🎉
u r sooooooo beautiful
I know you are a Master Student, and I don't know you so don't take my opinion with too much weight, but I believe you should think about pursuing a PhD in Chemistry/Toxicology/Pharmacy. The work you have done, in only three weeks is unbelievable. Amazing video!
Thank you so much christian for your kind words, i graduated from my masters last year and currently working as a researcher, to be honest with you i don’t know if i still have the energy or the time to pursue a PhD, maybe id i get a perfect opportunity i may change my mind who knows, again thank you and appreciate you enjoying the video.
Hi Mo! Thank you for the video, I was waiting for your assessment about those viral videos. It really makes me sad that medical doctors are taking obviously low quality studies to try to sell these things and even more so saying that is more effective than the current acceptable treatments, those people are even trained in Ivy League unis in the US and I 100% think they know what they are doing (specially her that has a skincare brand). People think essential oils are this innocuous elements when they are not. I have seen a case report (haven't read the complete article) about a possible association of lavender essential oil use and precocious puberty in children, both girls and boys due to estrogenic effects in breast tissue. It would be interested if you could assess this also (although is a really long process) because your input is really necessary with all this 'clean beauty' trends that sells really expensive products with multiple essential oils. 😄
❤❤❤❤
❤️❤️❤️
This was amazing! Thank you for your hard work and dedication to science in skincare 🙏✨️
I am so glad you enjoyed it, thank you for watching
This is remarkable - an incredible amount of work 👏🏼👏🏼 💕 Before the vid popped up, I'd found one paper (seemed to a lay-person a half-decent trial),comparing it's efficacy for hyperpigmentation, compared to hydroquinone(plus a placebo group ) ....other than that,a few random online groups extolling its virtues as a 'natural' 😕 hair remover ( I was *trying* to find out what on earth was doing the work in an oil that would make your body hair fall out ... I couldn't find any proper answer,so I just concluded that whatever it was, it's probably not good 😊) . Thank you so,so much ✌🏼💕
Thank you so much, yes that paper if i am not mistaken is by the same author, it’s an attempt by that author to really glamorise that oil benefits. Most likely it’s just an oil that have a risk that need more investigation and no solid evidence for efficacy 😊
Thank you for the deeper dive into Cyprus oil Mo! Let's just say I no longer follow certain a dermatologist 😊
My pleasure and thank you watching 😊
So much work and so much to consider! Very nice, thank you for this video!
My pleasure 😇 and thank you for watching
I've been very excited for this video! It's so frustrating how people assume natural extracts are safe without proper saftey data. Thank you so much for all the time and effort you put into this, I appreciate it greatly!
Thank you so much Ruby, I totally share your frustration and sometimes it feels depressing trying to undo the damage that some just do with 5 sec video
Thank you Mo- this was truly incredible. All the research and work you have done putting this together was amazing and greatly appreciated. You presented the information perfectly and so happy to have this knowledge. Thank you so much Mo
Thank you so much for the kind words and support always Paige
Thank you for clarifying this topic
My pleasure 😇
I’ve never heard of this. Does this work mechanically or chemically?
i use skin oil in daily skin care, so ive switched out my regular one with this one to see what happens. its cheaper than my regular skin oil and smells very little, so its a zero sacrifice for me to try. if it works for its fabolous claims remains to see, but so far: it absorbs well, and quickly, doesnt leave much of a residue, and is excellent under makeup. as for anything else, i guess I'll see when im done w the bottle 🤷♀️
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. It's always a good thing to learn as much as we can before we try a new product. I have seen a lot of positive reviews on the product and I must admit that it's tempting but I was asking myself how long I should be using it to maintain the results and what it's going to be like years down the road. It's a fairly new product and I have yet to find long time users who can talk about it so I'm not hopping on that train just yet.
Is the amount you applied enough for the half of the face in single application?
Will this help with pitted scars like Normal microneedling devices?
my bad, never read the label, thought that was glycolic acid when i buy, that’s however worked on me twice a week/ sunscreen 50spf always, but now with your video i understood why i should use heavier moisturiser 🥲 u re more informative than the brand!! ❤
😯
Why is nobody talking about the A-Game 20? I was able to handle the Ordinary Retinal 0.2% Emulsion every night after only 1 bottle of their Granactive Retinoid Emulsion, but the retinal is too small and I went through it too quickly, so I switched to the G&G A-Game 20 and haven’t looked back. Great product! This is the one you should be using if you came from tretinoin. The A-Game 10 pretty much anyone can use, it’s literally half as strong as the 20.
