The PROBLEM with Mario in the Super Mario Bros. Movie
Did Mario have a proper character arc in the movie?
The Future of Mario Kart: th-cam.com/video/zCNqyzQuB2o/w-d-xo.html
Why Ash Needed to Fail in Pokémon: th-cam.com/video/EPBRe3wvwqU/w-d-xo.html
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the Super Mario Bros. Movie. The film had a lot of great things to offer. There was one thing that the film lacked that I don't think was talked about enough, that being the (lack of) character arc in Mario.
While Mario does "change" in the movie his arc is a bit static since he doesn't overcome any negative beliefs or ideologies by the end of the film. He only gets stronger in order to beat the bad guy which is only one half of the equation.
Join me on a journey to the Mushroom Kingdom where we will analyze how the Super Mario Bros. Movie handled Mario's character arc, how it could have been improved and if it was necessary at all.

    Ironically the sonic 1 movie had more story i know it wasn't like anything special and the set-up was kinda odd but atleast it had some story an arc and development for sonic the story was revolved around sonic's character he went from a coward who hide and run away from others because of his powers to learn not to run away anymore and uses his power to protect himself and...the ones he care about sonic payed off his arc and development in a satisfying conclusion. Look i know sonic 1 wasn't anything special or anything and the story itself was kinda 7/10 at best but atleast it successfully pulled off sonic's character arc very well and payoff with a satisfying conclusion..and i kinda love when a story give the character an arc and conclude and pay off their arc and development in a satisfying way that's good writing if you ask me is it perfect? No.. absolutely not it has it's flaws but still it was quite decent. But with the mario movie... Nothing we got none of that i hope yhe sequel kinda step things up and kimda have the same treatment as sonic movies you know...get better in each sequel.

    They could have done a Nosferatu episode as a nod to the gag, but a parody entirely with spongebob characters that follows the storyline of the Nosferatu movie, but doesn't show or mention Orlock himself.

    I feel like the writers are also missing the fact that the original “Nosferatu” (who’s actually named Count Orlok btw) is just edited shots from the original movie. It makes the scene really eerie in the same vein as the overly detailed frames they’d do in the early-mid seasons before they started making every frame overdone. It’s just one shot of him in the doorway flicking the lights and then another of him looking at the camera then smiling. But in Squidferatu, it’s clearly just another guy from the crew dressed up to look like the original that they took pictures of to edit for animation. It’s too clean. He’s not draped in shadow anymore and they have him placed against the cartoony background of the rest of the show. There’s WAY too many angles of him for him to be scary. If they really HAD to include Orlok again, they should have put the SpongeBob characters IN the world of Nosferatu, not the other way around. Have them make funny quips at the movie, it could work!

    The fact that they chose to use "The Phantom of the Opera" is just like... another gut punch. The Phantom of the Opera is for sure, MANY TIMES more well known than Nosfer-freaking-atu is. Not knowing who Nosferatu is enhanced the joke for loads of people. But the Phantom of the Opera is pretty well known. Even if you don't know what it is, you've heard of it. And also... the Phantom of the Opera isn't scary? The Phantom is a menacing guy with a scary deformed face, but he's not supposed to be that frightening. Nosferatu is funny because he is inherently scary looking. And the stiffly edited live action footage makes him appear even more uncanny. This stylized drawing of the Phantom just does not hit the same way at all. He doesn't look like a scary character.

      Yeah that’s a whole other discussion about how celebrity voice casting messes up a lot of these animated movies that use characters with pre-established voices. These movies would do best quality wise if they hired someone who is a good actor but can also do an excellent impression of the character (which is likely not a well-known celebrity) but because of how modern movies are marketed they’d take a big hit at the box office by not using a celebrity. I also think they directed Pratt to not sound too much like Mario so audiences could recognize Pratt’s voice so I don’t actually blame him for not sounding enough like Mario. He probably played the role exactly how he was directed to. Possibly a subject for another video. I’d need to research the subject the subject more before making a concrete statement, hence why I only referred to the casting as “controversial” which reflects how others feel about it, as my opinion has not yet fully formed.

  • @ryanlee5512
    @ryanlee5512 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I think Mario should give off some sort of meaning/effect weather he has an arc or not. like in TTYD everyone in Mario’s team changes besides himself due to his kindness, the movie sort of give Mario the “don’t know when to quit” though it kinda falls flat cuz no one learns from it. I also wish they had Mario’s greatest strengths used as his greatest flaws, he’s brave but it means often he gets himself in trouble plowing straight first into danger, he’s forgiving which means he gives chances to others who will inevitably betray him and him never giving up if in a team situation could cost his teammates Health a lot. it’s that kind of “conflict” that I think Mario should learn and use more responsibly like the player learning better strategies.

    • @StoriesAreMeaningful
      @StoriesAreMeaningful 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      On the point of Mario not needing an arc because others around him can have them instead, that is something that other stories have succeeded in (for example in Mary Poppins Poppins herself doesn’t change but the family does). I almost addressed that idea in the video but didn’t for a few reasons. There are two other characters who I think have arcs (Luigi and Donkey Kong). DK has a “self-acceptance” arc where he learns to accept himself in the eyes of his father and he learns this through relating to Mario’s own similar feelings (which Mario doesn’t himself overcome, rather he just impresses his dad by beating Bowser) As for Luigi (who I think changes the most in the film) he spends most of the run time captured by Bowser and most substantial moment of changing and becoming braver is through flashback remembering Mario standing up for him and feeling bad about not being able to do it himself. Then in the end he stands up to Bowser and does the opposite of what the flashback showed. These are both meaningful arcs and are better arcs than Mario’s and, as you described in your example, they changed because of Mario’s kindness (similar to Mary Poppins changing the family). However, Luigi and DK had more of a “light switch” change rather than a gradual change unlike the family in Mary Poppins who gradually learned new lessons throughout the film. If these two characters were going to have a more substantial arc than Mario, then they should’ve had more screen time and more of a gradual change. Also, Mario goes on the hero’s journey in the Mario movie. He’s the one who defeats the bad guy, he’s the one who meets a mentor figure (Peach) and learns the fighting style of the world (power-ups) and, most importantly, the audience sees the world from his perspective first. All of these elements do not make for a good candidate for static protagonist, because we spend so much time with Mario and see him go through a journey, we expect him to change too. Compare this to Mary Poppins where Poppins herself does not go on a journey, Mr. Banks and the children do. They are the ones who undergo the heroes journey and they are the ones we see the story from the perspective of. And to the point of TTYD. While TTYD is a story based game (unlike mainline Mario games) it can still get away with a silent blank slate protagonist like Mario because it’s a video game. You are correct that Mario doesn’t go through an arc in that game and instead the partner characters and other characters go through arcs through knowing Mario. However, since you play as Mario, you feel like you are having that affect on those characters and you have to get better at the game in order to succeed in helping them. Think about it, if TTYD were a tv series, Mario would have been an awful character because he doesn’t talk but as a video game character, TTYD Mario succeeds because we can easily see ourselves as him and feel like we’re the ones who help the others undergo their change. Thank you for your contribution to the discussion by the way!

    I just interpreted Spongebob's concern for Fred as Spongebob just being friendly and friends with basically everyone in Bikini Bottom. You know, he knows the names of every Krusty Krab customer, makes friends with everyone he meets or at least attempts to as in Flats the Flounder or Sandy, and also technically Pearl and has a poor understanding of mutual friendshios as he considers Squidward as his friend despite him hating Spongebob. So it doesn't surprise me too much that he's so friendly towards Fred

    I feel like they could’ve at least made a reference to the Nosferatu episode rather than making a whole episode about him. The episode could’ve been about Squidward delivering mail Mr. Krabs got by accident at the Krusty Krab. As Squidward is bicycling to the address, it gets dark and the street lights begin to flicker, eventually shutting off for a bit, and coming on. Squidward gets to the house, an old lady opens the door and lets him stay the night. Again, the lights keep flickering, and he begins to hear a bunch of noises. In the morning, he discovers the old lady is just making a bunch of noise in her sleep, but still doesn’t know why the lights are flickering. The episode ends with a cutaway shot of Patrick scratching his back against an electrical box, and cuts to black.
