As for the salt in the coffee, this is not normally done at the engagement party, but a lot earlier in a relationship, at the Turkish equivalent of the"knocking ceremony", called "kız isteme", which means "asking for the girl". But I get it that they wanted to show us a bit of a Turkish tradition, even if this is not normally part of the engagement. BTW, in former times, when marriages were still arranged by the parents (we're talking some 25 years ago, and in rural areas it's still common) the salt in the coffee was the woman's subtle way of saying "I don't want you" without anyone "losing face". PS and Turkish engagement parties are usually just as big as a wedding with at least 300 - 400 guests, because the bride, the groom and both pairs of parents have to invite literally everybody they know. The engagement party is being paid for by the bride's family and the wedding by the groom's family, so it equals out. (I'm talking from 40 years of marriage with a man from Turkey, numerous visits to Turkey and many Turkish friends here in Germany)

I’m sorry but Tata’s idea of them working and living with her parents in Indonesia was a disaster waiting to happen and I do not blame James for waiting to go back to the US. Tata should have know that in orden to have a real future and oportunity to have a good life she had to give up living in Indonesia but she is too childish for that and her asking James to sponsor her sister is just crazy! They are not ready to be married, neither of them is ready for that commitment.
