    Can someone please explain to me what math is really really required to be a data scientist? I understand why it makes sense to know statistics, but why math? Is it sufficient enough to just know the basics of math like linear algebra and calculus at a beginner level?

    • @rohitchakravarthi94
      @rohitchakravarthi94 ปีที่แล้ว

      For optimising your ML DL models you need math, you need the knowledge of gradient decent, calculus strong differential knowledge, different functions, so yea you need math. Otherwise you will be blank when tuning your hyper parameters of your model.

    Thanks for the great video! I had watched a couple of "data engineer vs analyst vs scientist" before but yours is the one that made the difference between analyst and scientist click for me. Analysts report observations, scientists make predictions. It's kind of a past vision (learn from data) vs future vision (use it to predict).

    Thank you for this video. I thought I wanted to be software engineer but I’ve discovered I like analyzing data, conducting research & solving problems . What is your opinion on a BS in Bioinformatics & MS in Data Science? I’m not going to grad school unless I can secure funding or a scholarship, so I was wondering if I should just BS in Computer Science in case I don’t go to grad school but I am still able to become a software engineer. Thank you in advance for your response.

    • @datadition
      @datadition 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Raven! Think of it like this, a masters compliments your foundation knowledge (from your undergrad) and allows you to specialize further. So you should think first about building a good foundation that is somewhat tailored to your interests. Computer science in my opinion is a more "neutral" foundation than bioinformatics. If you wanted to be a software engineer lets say, you will not likely learn some fundamental principles a longer degree in CS teaches like data structures and algos etc in Bio as it somewhat specializes you around the Bio subject already. Whereas if you decided to be a data scientist after a CS degree you would be a much better one as most companies still require strong data engineering skills in their DS roles which a CS degree would better prepare you for. Alternatively, if you did decide Bio was the area for you after your first degree, doing a Biostatistics degree as a masters compliments your CS much better and opens up more options and still keeps you marketable for DS roles and not just Bio ones. You do not "need" a masters in DS to become a DS, its a possible path but not the only. Technical know-how combined with actual project work can prepare you for the path just as well especially with a strong foundation in something like CS.

      @@datadition thank you, thank you, thank you so much for this response! Before I wrote my original comment, I realized the school I am going to has a great minor in Neuroscience. I truly love CS, I was only interested in the Bioinformatics major bc of all the math & science courses 😭🤣. (Which sounds insane bc math stresses me out 🥴). I am interested Data Science bc I would like to conduct research involving meta cognition, memory, the brain, etc. I am more adept at CS so I decided to approach my research interests from that angle. I do not want desire to go to medical school, but I wouldn’t mind analyzing data on the brain & contributing to research in Neuroscience in that way. I have many options, bc my school allows them all. I can major in CS, minor is DS. & get a Bio MS w a concentration in Neuroscience & every other combination of that you can think of! I am still having a hard time deciding but I do really appreciate your feedback. If you have any more thoughts related to what I’ve shared now, I would love to hear. Like I said, I wrote my comment before realizing how flexible the CS/Informatics departments are at my school. Edited for typos 😅

    • @TheAmazinRaven
      @TheAmazinRaven 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@datadition I should mention that I am doing a lot of DS self study utilizing Data Camp, Udemy & I would like to obtain a google cert in DS. TH-cam is also very helpful as there are Bioinformatics courses using Python but focused on DS. I would like to have a portfolio of case studies related to my research interests etc. It would be “easier” if I could major in CS w a concentration in DS + select another minor (like most schools) but my school would essentially have me select a major in either CS, DS or Bio. I was originally thinking I can major in CS or Bio & do DS as self study but I honestly don’t mind either way. 😅

    It's invariably a pleasure to see a writer from Quora - or from any writing-medium, for that matter - speak, move, laugh, etc... on video. I think it's because it's so often the case that we know of those whose writings we most admire on online forums only in the way they present themselves on those very forums - that is, they remain in our minds for so long as these sort of distant, abstract figures - and putting a face and lively personality to the profile and its name and credentials very much helps us to connect with the person and bring what we've read of them to life in a different kind of way. It helps explain why it's such a surreal experience for many people to meet their favourite Hollywood actors for the first time.
