ABBA - Dancing Queen - Bass Cover
"Dancing Queen" is undoubtedly ABBA's most famous and successful song. Since its release in 1976, this timeless masterpiece has continued to captivate audiences across generations.
The backing track of this song was recorded on 4 and 5 August, 1975 according to “ABBA -The Complete Recording Sessions” (*1). The song's 100 BPM rhythm is driven by a simple yet essential drum pattern performed by Roger Palm and the iconic bass line performed by Rutger Gunnarsson. For an in-depth look at this bass line, there is an excellent article on notreble.com (*2).
In terms of fretboard positions in this video, for the tonic A which anchors the song, I chose an open A to make it easier to connect with the surrounding notes. For the 5th-6th-Octave (E-F#-Octave A), which is played after the A note in the main pattern, I used the A and D strings since the slide from the octave A goes down to around F in the original track. Of course you may prefer other positions.

This song is from ABBA's seventh studio album "Super Trouper". The Bass was played by Rutger Gunnarsson. The series of eighth notes in the intro are played with a slight gap between the notes. In the chorus, the same B note is played back and forth between the 2nd fret on the A string and the 7th fret of the E string. A happy song recorded in 1972. Bass is played by Rutger Gunnarsson. The chorus section is played in unison with the guitar played by Janne Schaffer. Rutger slides between C and G in the chorus when the chord changes.

Lasse Wellander was the guitarist who made significant contributions to ABBA. Tragically, we lost this legendary musician on 7th April 2023. In this song "Eagle" from "Live at Wembley Arena", Lasse's 32 bar guitar solo shines brilliantly. Depth is added by Rutger Gunnarsson's improvised bass line. Let's celebrate Lasse's musical legacy and honour his unforgettable contributions to the ABBA sound.
ABBA - As Good As New - Bass Cover

As Good As New is the first track from ABBA's Voulez-Vous album. Rutger Gunnarsson played bass on this song. The intro and the verse seem to be played with slap & pop. Or it may be two-finger & pop. In this video, I played the intro and the verse with slap & pop.
ABBA - My Mama Said - Bass Cover
มุมมอง 3.4Kปีที่แล้ว
My Mama Said from the "Waterloo" album released in 1974. This song may not be one of ABBA's most famous songs but it's very cool. Rutger Gunnarsson's basslines are great and Janne Schaffer's guitar solo is also cool.

The backing track of this song was played by the band called Foxy and recorded in Miami, US in 1979. The bassist was Arnold Paseiro. The intro riff is played on guitar and keyboard. Used to teach guitar for 10 years. Students learned to respect ABBA as soon as they understood the genius and complexity in their songwriting. And how great the women were at singing. Serious musicians know how to respect ABBA and the basslines are in general killer.
Best Abba song that I know. Amazing bassline nailed perfectly.
Amazing amazing job! Please "When i kissed the teacher" cover
Thank you for your suggestion! When I Kiss has an interesting bass line. Let me add it to my list.
NAILED IT BRO!
I can barely hear the bass
GREAT BASSIST!!!💪🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻⚡⚡⚡🎳🎳🎳👍🏻😎🙋🏻🍀
❤❤😊
Incredible playing!!!! Love it!
Acutually this song gives me the most chills no matter how many times I listen to it.
I read in a comment that their technician Michael B Tretow held this bassline as ABBAs/Gunnarssons best.
Awesome!!
nice!!! i really like your tone =)
Thank you!!
Excellent Dancing Queen bass line
Thanks a lot!
Fabulous. I know it's time consumering ... so precise and so well played. You are a Hero ! Bravo ! RIP Richard G
Rutger. Of course. Automatic correction
Absolutely it took a lot of time for me to analyse and practise! Thanks for watching.
Computers are sometimes a bit too helpful 😀
What apps do you use ? I use some splitter apps to isolate bass track too. Then with Audacity I listen to the track and I use Muse for scoring with the mouse ... Sometimes mp3 to midi convert too. What is the app that scrolls note and tabs with the music. I don't read tabs. Do you know about some apps that convert tabs to score (I do that manually). Thanks a lot
@@IntriCat I use MuseScore (musescore.org) for notation and scrolling staves/tabs, Melissa player (mosynthkey.github.io/Melissa/index_en.html) for listening for transcription and practice, Sonic Visualiser (sonicvisualiser.org) for audio pitch analysis. MuseScore can create tabs from staves and vice versa (manual adjustments are required though). For separating tracks, vocalremover.org/splitter-ai works well.
Gracias!!!!!
Thank you for watching!
What a great job you did, awesome!) Your bass sounds amazing, as well as you completely nailed Rutger's tricky funky parts :)
Thank you so much!
Merci beaucoup, c'est super! 👍 Jf
Thank you so much!
Nice! 🙂
I see you may have a favorite band for bass…
Excellent!
ABBA had such a long list of kick-ass bass lines.
Could you do dancing queen some day?
I would love to see Take A Chance On Me
I request Dancing Queen and Chiquitita please 😊
Awesome...
This is the first time I see a cover when the ghost notes make sense. Amazing cover.
Did Rutger Gunnarsson write this bassline too?
I do not think so because Rutger Gunnarsson passed way in 2015 and the bass on this track appears to be played on synths.
so cool !
Great bassline by Mike Watson although Rutger Gunnarsson appears in the video.
Right, it's a great bassline by Mike Watson!
Man you're soo accurate with those pauses making it sound soo clean, I hate pauses😅
Yeah, pauses are important but they can also be tricky to play 😀
I had no idea this song existed until an ABBA tribute played it (ironically named Arrival From Sweden, nice). I was absolutely enamored. To be 100% honest, I'd love to learn the piano for this song (former piano player, currently Bass) but luckily I am a bass player! I cannot tell you how many times I have had to go back reference this video, man 😅
Thanks for the comment. This is the only ABBA track without any vocals (not even Ah chorus). They seemed to always play in their concerts.
@@sonicbluebass I think it's the only instrumental, period. Unless there's more unreleased songs, which supposedly were released back when Voyage released.
ABBA wouldn’t have been ABBA without Rutger’s outstanding mastery of the bass !! The bass line totally makes this song!
This song is so good!
PERFECT!!
2:26 🔥
Hey man i saw your bass cover on slipping through my fingers, do you by chance have the pdf copy lying around that you can slide? Would be nice thank you
Ist das das ein CS-Modell? Bass klingt sehr gut> total trocken<Perfekt für diesen Song!!!
Thank you. This bass is not a custom shop model but a regular one - American Jazz made in 2002 😀
Thank you so much. I love this song.
I think Bjorn watched this video and he likes it.
Amazing!!! Could you please share the pdf with us?
Funny. The name of your channel is "Sonic Blue Bass". Forgive the stupid question. But at least I can take solace in guessing correctly. 😂
I like it....awesome
I like the color of your bass. Do you know what it's called? Sonic Blue?
Yes, that is the reason for my channel name. But I found out later in the 2003 Fender catalogue (this bass is a 2002 American Jazz) that it is "Sky Blue"😂 And the colour seems to have gradually changed with age.
It's a beauty! Thanks!
3:35 has always been my favorite part of the song.
th-cam.com/video/4ZfS_9ocdEQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=lm-qVa0G1sqFgnHX If you ever do a bass video of SOS listen to this version. It was recorded at the same time as the English version. Agnetha put it on her Swedish language album that was released at the the same time. Ive got a thing for ABBA in other languages! lol Especially all the Spanish versions.
Thanks @lucpraslan for the info! I like it! I searched online and found that the Swedish version of SOS is from Agnetha's 1975 solo album "Elva kvinnor i ett hus". I will check out that album. Cheers!
Do more ABBA covers thank you you're a life saver! ❤
Hello :) Love all of your abba bass covers. Its helping me so much in my bass learning journey! I have a quick question if you don't mind! I would like to share a few covers myself playing bass... if I want to use an original song, like you have with the abba songs, would I just need to sign up to something like 'lickd' where I pay for a license to play each song? If you have any advice I'd really appreciate it. Thank you!
Thanks a lot for watching my videos. I recommend you have a look at "Content ID" in the TH-cam help. I do not receive any revenue from my videos😀
Mmm seafoam green
Yeah, it seems to have taken on a slight green tinge with age.
Excellent indeed. You nailed it. And with tabs and everything.
Genial cover!!! Thanks!
