We're a bunch of mountain biking dads in our 40s-50s. We're not the best out there and we're not looking to set PRs (though sometimes we do). We ride just to have fun. Michaux State forest is our local riding area and we're lucky to have so many great trails close to home.

Are you running inserts in your wheels/tires? Im running a rear cushcore and contemplating putting a front in Im curious if an insert would’ve lessened the likelihood of breaking a spoke….
I am not running inserts and I usually run slightly higher pressures for my weight. I always thought the inserts were for when you were doing larger jumps or drops to avoid burping the tires on impact. I tend to break spokes when rocks or sticks fly up and hit the spokes or so it seems.
Where does upper Canaan begin at?
Follow Soccer Mom trail to Upper Canaan. Starts around 15:23
Just noticed you were riding a 130mm bike. I rode my 130mm bike on Lawnmower and it was brutal lol Just Bought a 160/150 🤙🏽
@@TheNewnan3 That sounds plush! It is a SB130 but it's "lunch rided" to 160/137. Lawnmower is so much fun even with this amount of travel.
@@MichauxGravityRidersIm sort of wondering if I should’ve gone with a 170mm bike but I think 160/150 should be okay
Gotta love some good flow and technical chunk. Good ride buddy. Maybe one day we can meet up and you can take us for a proper michaux tour. Really wanna explore that place more. Keep grinding and stay safe ✌️
Glad u guys made it to the reddish knob, I love that place. Will be going there in a couple of weeks. I wanna ride Death Star. 🤙🏾
We have been talking about a trip down there for a few years now. The place is epic and one of our riders says this is #2 after Pisgah area on the east coast. Our group did ride Death Star at the end but sadly I didn't. I will say the shuttle was an adventure and just be prepared with a good 4WD vehicle when you drop in on the WV side.
@@MichauxGravityRiders I would agree with your friend on how good this place is. Did the cliff trail but still haven’t hit Death Star. I do Have my good old tundra 🤙🏾. Hope to catch you guys sometimes at Michaux. Love that place to 🤙🏾💯
what are the shuttle routes?
The Watershed is really easy to shuttle. Hamburg Rd gets you to most of the top trails. You'll have to go in on Mountaindale Rd if you want to do the northern and steep side trails as there is a gate at the top of Fishing Creek Rd.
Man that looks like some chunky fun.
Good ride buddy. It looks like they are widening the trails to provide vehicle access to maintain the trails. That would be my best guess. Our buddy that took us to the trails near the fire tower told us the same thing about naming the trails in our video. I thought it was odd but I guess these trails aren’t sanctioned and are at risk of being closed. There is so much more there that I didn’t get to ride so I hope to be able to make the trip back from York to explore some more.
I appreciate the naming of trails! I watched this video yesterday and now have need to go riding on it! May first gravel ride to get know the area though. Thanks for the video!
Would you please stop naming trails in your videos. DCNR is cracking down on us. Otherwise, rock on dude!
@IainWalker-f4j I still haven't seen any evidence of DCNR "cracking down" other than some trails disappearing on one 3rd party website and some "karens" on FB complaining about the trails. With so many riders tracking their rides and leaving heatmaps there are no secrets in this forest other than the ones that have 0 heatmaps. I believe that more people finding and using the trails for mountain biking increases advocacy for the sport.
We've spoken to multiple rangers and friends have attended meetings with the dcnr. The threat is real, please be advised. They have started blocking off trails, such as big boy.
@@IainWalker-f4j DCNR doesn't seem to be very transparent when it comes to their meetings. They often have closed or limited meetings to the public to discuss public use areas. I'm glad you have some friends going to these meetings - maybe these can be publicized? If 100 mountain bikers show up to these meetings maybe they will listen? As for Big Boy, I haven't been up that way in a few months. Just throwing this out there - did they block it off for the Ironmasters Challenge that was this past weekend? Or did they drop trees across it? I do find it ironic that popular "hidden" trails are publicized and used in a public event with 100s of people such as the Ironmasters Challenge, but mountain bikers are the problem. They allow motorized cycles for the enduro event on these "sensitive" trails but mountain bikers are the problem. The local trail associations that supposedly represent Michaux, have no advocacy for mountain biking.
Good stuff man! I hope to see this channel grow!
Thanks for your support!
@@MichauxGravityRiders of course! I stumbled on this video but I loved the video angle, the amount of talking is minimal but also there and entertaining. It’s a great mix and I’d love to see many more riding videos like this!
Does michaux have a decent amount of flow trails?
There are no machine built flow trails in Michaux. You can find some "flowy" trails, some with jumps, but nothing like the Narrowback/Tillman trails in VA or Boundary Line in MD. Check out the backside of the ridge off Woodrow Rd. Everything you'll find here is raw trail riding.
@@MichauxGravityRiders awesome thanks man!
Cool trail, but arent there any ticks?
I never get any ticks on me. Ride on!
@@MichauxGravityRiders damnn, i wish my country was like that, theres ticks even in little grass
Nice! Which country? There are probably more ticks in my backyard than there are in this forest in Pennsylvania.

So many good trails in that area of Michaux.
Middle Michaux just has a different feel to it, like it's bigger.
very solid video.thanks how about more info...trails you were riding clockwise ? thanks great job
@rickmullenmullen1639 thanks for the feedback and for watching! I always include the list of trails in the title of the video as well as chapters if you want to skip ahead. Trail names are typically added in the video to show the start of a trail or when I'm changing trails. Ridelogs are included in the Description so you can see the route and direction I rode. Sometimes Trailforks will hide the map if they consider an area to be "sensitive". Hope that helps!
Knuckleduster is much more fun the other direction... Double track up to it to the right when you come out from taxcut
Nice, I see what you mean. We'll have to give that a go next time we're down there. Seems like it would be a nice side detour before hitting The Fear>Loam Ranger.
This and dead women’s hollow are the only sections of Michaux I haven’t rode. I’m for sure ripping wigwam hill and yellow ridge descent (now that I watched this). Probably go ride astronomy and Canadian hollow when I slide up to there, maybe in a couple weeks FYI: ejector (the trail you said I’d like beside bong) is sick! And desination mars (Billy goat you called it 😂) kind of… sucked lol.
@blaine142, this route was so much fun we did this again last weekend and brought more friends with us. If you eat the steep side of the Shed for breakfast, you will appreciate Wigwam Hill, its nuts. Be on the lookout for jibs and gap jumps along the way on Yellow Ridge Descent - they come up on you fast. CH is chill for the first half but is a fast, loose, rocky descent on the 2nd half. Avoid this on a sunny 95 degree day as there is no cover in this area. I tend to like this one better than Astronomy even though the latter is a bit steeper. The last few times I've been down Astronomy there have been trees down which ruined the flow. These are all old school trails in this section and they are mostly official and marked with 4x4 posts, unlike others in the forest. And yeah, compared to all of these, Destination Mars kinda sucks but I'll give the trailbuilders creative points on that one. Thanks for watching!
@@MichauxGravityRiders yeah I watched: definitely saw at least 4 jibs/ jumps in the descent! Looks like a great rip. Thanks for the intel, I’m for sure going up here sooner than later.
One of my favorite routes in Michaux! Can’t wait until my Achilles heals and I van get back in the woods!,,
This is great longer route down the mountain in Northern Michaux. Lots of accessible trails. I pray that you heal so you can enjoy the activities you love!
@@MichauxGravityRiders It’s going to take 3 or 4 months, but I’ll be back. 😎 Yea, that part of Michaux is so good now. Thanks!!!!
I just rode Wigwam Hill for the first time this past weekend. Should definitely be a double black. That steepness is nuts!
Its surprisingly steep and the difficulty level does not translate on video. Just know your limitations!
I’m going Tommorow. This is my first time mountain biking.
Good luck! Its a fun sport. If you're going to Hershey, bring a tire puncture kit!
I was there on the the 4th too. Rode north side and steep. Man it was a hot one!! Great video!
@@joesmith3908 Thanks! Yeah, parking was at a premium at the Hamburg lot and Three Saws trailhead. There is so much more to explore but when we only go once a year everyone wants to rip Boundary and Catovid.
Great riding👍. I feel ya on that shinner.
Thanks! Injuries heal, but epic riding days remain forever.
When I saw Wigwam descent .....yikes! I remember back in the day carrying our CX bikes up that during the IronCross!
Wow, it was hard to walk down some sections. This is one I'd like to ride again.
Great content. Watched a bunch of your previous vids. I've never been to MSF. I'm in for the fun downhills. Ebike makes it even more attainable. What trails would you suggest for me to seek out first? tia
This trail Vista is one of the best. With an ebike you'll make quick work of Cold Springs Road from Laurel Lake parking lot. Lots of trails across the ridge too. Thanks for the sub!
Looks like a sick route, I definitely gotta check Yellow Ridge out.
Yellow Ridge is so fast and long it almost feels like something from the Watershed. There were a few small climbs in this route but most of it was just fun and fast trail riding. I think I saw upper Gutter was going to be part of an upcoming MTB marathon so hopefully it gets some trimming by then.
Is it about 6 to 8 miles covering all of the loops?
Yes, my ridelog in the description shows 9.3 miles and that is hitting every trail. You can easily shorten this to your liking.
Looks like I’ll be adding this to my list, thx for the video 🤙
Get ready for a challenge!
One long rock garden.
fast and chattery - so much fun!!
My old stomping grounds. Beautiful place!
Love the trails in Southern Michaux!
Pink socks? There’s no pink socks in mountain biking. Ala Tom Hanks. 😂
He claimed it was his only clean pair. What is everyone's preference for socks? High or low?
I appreciate you explaining that. Living here for the last 5 years, I never knew they did controlled burns. What a relief. Thanks for the videos!
I didn't know that either and it was fascinating to see the aftermath up close, let alone ride through it. This is why I highly recommend riding this trail now if you can. Happy to share!
Its hard to believe this is the same trail! th-cam.com/video/eJIpXjSq5Pk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=v0bM7DPcSJE_Ul4g&t=817
I appreciated you telling me on trailforks too. Enjoy the ride!
Beautiful ride!
Thanks!
Nice ride! Thanks for sharing it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Honestly I find myself going faster on these trails then any other simply because they are easy and the downhills on the "all rights" loop are really flowy at a consistent gradient. Its the flowiest non-flow trails we have and it wears me out unlike any other riding area.
This is why it is still fun to hit these trails once in a while. I think I had more fun this time on my hardtail here than the previous time with my full suspension bike. This place doesn't really need full suspension to have fun!
What hard tail do you have..?
It is a 2021 Giant Fathom 2 29. It still rides great!
Dropping in to respectfully disagree with some of the commentators here for the following reasons: 1. The state forests are managed by - gasp - state foresters for a wide range of uses. Mnt biking and proper trail design wasn’t covered in classes. Outdoor recreation was a different part of the curriculum. This is all still ‘new’ to them. 2. Said foresters ARE getting on board and coordinating to build trails with the IMBA and other local groups is state forests all over Pa. 3. Having a handle on where the trails are now and going to be helps with planning, funding, maintenance and getting the emergency services to your location after you just send it. 4. It IS fun to mess around and create the trail you see in the landscape - illicit, hidden, your special secret cool thing - but it is not your land. It’s being managed for all the citizens and because you can easily access it without supervision doesn’t give you permission to create erosion gullies, cut trees, create dangerous conditions for other users and set bare earth for invasive species to start growing. 5. If there is a cohesive group here that legitimately wants to build new better trails - reach out and I can put you in contact with the right people. Keep the rubber side down.
that east side is miserable
I would guess people are hiding trails to try and save them, the DCNR did a land study last year maybe 2 years ago. They mapped all the trails and marked all the "unstainable" trails that were unsanctioned and from what i got from reading the report they dont want anything over some percent grade and they were talking about adding new trails that were "better" for the land bla bla. Then didnt outright say they would close trails but its DCNR and they dont like fun things. Hence why people keep alot of trails off of trail forks and cover up exits and entrances. People spend countless hours to build awesome stuff and dont want DCNR to find it and wreck it for safety's sake.
Unfortunately most DCNR staff don’t ride mnt bikes regularly - maybe that’s a problem you could solve. Contact the regional office and ask if they’d come ride to ‘inspect’ the trails. Get to know them and develop a relationship. They work for DCNR because they love the outdoors and give a great deal of thought to stewardship. Also they are updating the Strategic Outdoor Recreation Plan this year- www.dcnr.pa.gov/Recreation/PAOutdoorRecPlan/Pages/default.aspx. Get involved 🎉
@whispering_pines Sounds great and thats what SAMBA has been doing, unfortunately all we get are XC trails but it's better then nothing I suppose
There is a little section on here about "Informal Trails" now. It doesn't say to stay off them, but this might have scared the builders www.dcnr.pa.gov/StateForests/FindAForest/Michaux/Pages/MountainBiking.aspx
Most of the trails in Michaux have been there for decades. I’m glad I live about 20 minutes from northern Michaux and get to ride some of the well known trails.
Agreed, most of these are not "new". I have heard the same from other riders who have been coming here much longer.
Yo dude, yeah. Since the last time we rode and you said that you found that trail you called it billy goat and added it to Trailforks. I was kinda like “ehhhhh maybe you shouldn’t do that” DNR is a bag of dicks. Also maybe the person who built that trail doesn’t want people to know about it. That’s why when I started riding places like Michaux and even the old stuff that the watershed I stopped recording it on strava (and kind of stopped posting it on here too) the city of Frederick went through the freeride trails with a liaison (someone on our side of the mtb team, not the gOvErNmEnT side) and literally pulled open strava and just looked at the heat maps and basically could tell where people were riding. So my advice from some of the OG’s and trail builders would be stop using strava on those trails, if your going to record it, don’t mention where it is( I know it sucks, but that or it gets closed permanently and you’ll never get to ride it again ) stop adding trails to Trailforks. Unsanctioned trails are the best, and if they keep getting shut down we will just keep getting left with stupid blue flow trails that are machine made and can’t even ride them in the winter.
@blaine142 you make a great point and something I don't think I realized until things got to this level. Its certainly something that I'll be more mindful of in the future. I will say that no trail was ever exposed by me that didn't already exist as a published trail on TF or visible through the heatmaps. As I mentioned in an earlier comment, there are no secrets with this technology. If we can see it in the app, so can DCNR. If other people are riding in sensitive areas and posting their ridelogs to Strava or Trailforks, other users and entities will also know its there.
yeah I agree 100% with you on that statement. Also what I used to say to myself too, until I physically talked that guy who I mentioned was walking through the woods with a county member lol, then I was like “man maybe strava and ride logs on Trailforks is a bad idea” I’m not blaming you or even my videos that I’ve posted. So granted you can and everyone else can easily look up this information. The point of deleting it off Trailforks is to deter more people who aren’t as familiar with this area to ride here. Less people riding it, most likely less heat map. It takes ALOT of laps to make a heat map, so if you didn’t know this place and you got on Trailforks and saw 5 trails well you’d be like “well I ain’t going there, it will take me all damn year to find the good stuff “ so that means less people and less heat map. Also not to mention if you didn’t know it like the back of your hand (say DNR) you might be using this map to find where a lot of people are riding, if there’s no map. You have to work a little harder to find the trails (let me ask you how many state workers you see trying to work harder? AMiRIGHT?) 😅 So use strava in your normal legal rides (places where they want attention) continue to post your videos, but don’t pin point the exact location. I guess I’ve done more bad then good the past couple years so I’m toning it back because I love these trails and don’t want to see anything someone spent so much effort on be closed
I just went on Trailforks and all trails seemed to on the maps now.
@billygoat710 if you are using mobile then the regional data has been saved or cached to your device. If you open TF in the browser it will sync with their servers in real time and unfortunately all the trails are "hidden". I'm not sure for how long.
@@MichauxGravityRiders oh wow I get what your saying. I think it is local mountain bikers not wanting trails known. There’s a comment on a newer trail asking why people keep requesting trails be documented, stating they weren’t on there for a reason.
@@Billygoat710 Interesting theory. So it might not be DCNR who is hiding the trails to discourage MTB in this region? It may be the trail builders? I just don't know if that makes sense because DNCR has all of the "informal" trails cataloged in their most recent Trail Assessment PDF on the state MSF page. My point is DNCR already knows where these trails are. They were already documented on Trailforks and in their assessment. There are no secrets - especially with all the heatmap data. So why hide them? At least if they are on Trailforks, people can report issues and prevent re-routes if there are trees down or where there are erosion concerns. New trail riders get descriptions/ratings of the trails to help them make good choices to avoid injuries. DCNR gets data on which trails are the most popular which hopefully prevents them from getting shut down or helps to improve the maintenance. If more people ride in the region that is increased accessibility for the sport so if the district managers were smart about this, they would use this data to request more funding for MTB in the region.
@@MichauxGravityRiders I found the trail w afore mentioned comment. Its in comments under Hammy by st. wright.
Michaux is my favorite place ride in PA! The black diamonds and double blacks are the kind of trails at advanced riders crave. I go camping and riding in Michaux every spring just ride these trails. Of course i always support the local businesses while there. It could be such a boom to the area if they made these trails official, promoted them and advertised them. I realize they are kinda gray trails, so i dont spread word about them because i dont want them shut down. I know where a lot of the trails are now, so I'll be back in May for some camping and sending!
Welcome to PA..where everything needs to be legally sanctioned or the ambulance chasing lawyers and the fun police will intervene! The old school rule of thumb for PA mountain bikers is asking for forgiveness is easier than asking for permission. Maybe Pennsylvania's "new office of outdoor recreation" and the $500,000 in tax payer funding they get can change things. But sounds like their main focus is equity and inclusion in outdoor recreation!?
Yep. You nailed it dude!
I spoke with a ranger last spring who said the trails, while not sanctioned, are legal to ride at the moment. He said his concern is that if a crash happens on trails that are not built, maintained and known by the DCNR there will be safety as well as liability issues. Ex: Finding the injured person on an unmapped trail and then that person looking for compensation from the DCNR due to the fact that this trail should not exist in the first place. The other concern he stated was that MSF is a working Forest(resource extraction) and that unsanctioned trails could cause confusion when surveying an area for future logging. All that being said, he totally understood the boon to the local economy and the forest in general. I also got the feeling from his general language, “There’s only two of us for this place(MSF) and Tuscarora. We can’t be everywhere.”, that they will be turning a blind eye for the foreseeable future due to lack of manpower at the least.
Would you know if Is this happening only at Michaux or are other Pa. parks/forest losing trails also?
Not sure if this is local to this park or statewide
A larger percentage of the trails at Michaux are unsanctioned rake and ride trails. I think the local MTB riders are trying to keep them off of public platforms so they don't get closed by DCNR. In my opinion there are so many trails at Michaux that it would be great if they'd keep them on trailforks so they stay somewhat ridden in.
