If you don’t know the major scale , you need to watch beginner videos
I know all these things but I fail to put them into practice. I’m in my fourth year of playing guitar and though I know I’ve made progress, I’m not nearly where I’d like to be with it. My 67 year old brain and fingers are slow to learn and retain.
Great advice !!! I'm guilty of breaking all 4 rules......😒 Especially rule #1.......I might be feeling a little tired ( busy day ) and a 'wee' bit lazy, so I end up 'noodling' around with tunes and movements that I can already do ( and get right about 95% of the time) instead of concentrating and putting in the effort to learn new 'stuff' !!! I'm going to 'post' these 4 helpful hints directly in front of my practice area. Thanks !!!
This is really helpful. A few months ago I started playing again after not playing for many years. I've been playing minimum for 2 hours daily. I have moments when I can play some very nuanced, technical phrases and I'm pleased with my progress. However, I often pick up the guitar and go to play one of them, and it almost feels like I've never played it before. I have to struggle with it for a while to get it under my fingers again. It's frustrating and has my questioning my progress. This video now has me re-thinking my approach to practicing. Thank you!
Thanks. It's a lot harder than it looks.
Great advice!
thanks!
Exactly all the mistakes I do, and I knew it from the beginning, and doing nothing against it 😱
we all make mistakes. 2025 is your year!
I usually do all these exercises for like 5-10 minutes each after a good hand stretch before I start playing a few easy songs for practice. They make a huge difference compared to just stretching and playing cold cause all of these get your fingers moving and makes it easier to relax your hand.
totally. always good to start each practice with technique exercises!
I really needed to hear this. It's all so obvious in retrospect and I feel like an idiot for having spent so many YEARS practicing the same crap over and over again... I'm reminded that in actuality, I'm fearful and lazy of actually trying to learn NEW things, because it's hard, and I won't be able to play them correctly for a while, and that makes me feel like I'm not good at guitar. Hence the incentive to just play the shit I know how to play already, over and over again, with the excuse that I am "refining it"... And I've learned this lesson before, but somehow I keep forgetting it. Your video however really hit the spot, and its started a little fire in me - I'm gonna do it differently this time, and I will swear to grow more as a guitarist in 2025 than I have in any of the 10 years prior. Big thanks for putting it together so clearly and concisely
Man I love to hear this. So stoked it's motivating you. 2025 is your year! Don't beat yourself up though, we all do it. It's just a good reminder to get on track. No one likes sounding bad, so it's easy to play the things you already know as your "go to". I still have to remind myself too. And it's fine to jam stuff you know, experiment, write, noodle, etc. I learn a lot by just messing around and exploring the instrument. But the real growth comes with that super intentional practice towards the things you suck at. Anyway, stoked this helped you. Let me know how it's working out for you once you implement this
I’ve been doing the same
Spot on, brother, you've just saved me saying it all myself. And, like you say, we know all this, really, but need to hear it anyway. There must be millions of us... And, indeed, stoked am I now, too. We can ask each other half way through the year how we're progressing without the excuses. 2025, it is!

"All athletes train to win. True champions train to eliminate the possibility of losing." - Olympic champion oarsman Matthew Pinsent
Great exercises. I usually add different "spiders" like 1-3-2-4-or 1-2-4-3 (it's very challenging). Super useful video, man. Thanks for this. Keep making videos. Subscribed from Argentina!
Thanks! Oh yeah those are good too I prob need to do a video on those. Appreciate ya!
Loved it. Always learn something from your vids.
🙏🏼
Thank you for your videos! They are short but they have some of the best advice on TH-cam 🙌
Man that’s very nice. Thanks Joel! I’m experimenting with some different lengths & formats, but I’m super glad these are helping!
That's what I like. I can't stand vids that go on and on but never get to the point.
My finger won’t do any of this! 😂
Haha just start with the 1st exercise for now. Try just going up - 1, 2, 3, 4 on each string. If that’s too much of a stretch, try pulling your thumb down to about the middle Of the back of the neck. or you can just start it up higher on the neck for now, like on the 5th or 7th fret.
I love it! 😂 Happened to me in my private music piano lessons. 🤯 But WHAT do you do to handle that…???
Gotta have that worship leader thin pick so it flexes 😂
Haha
You are the man. Thank you so much for your videos. I just got a guitar and your channel has helped me so so much. Thank you again wish i would have found you sooner
Thank you so much for the nice comment! I’m stoked to hear these videos are helping!
A big one is every guitarist will have a hater don’t be discouraged
thanks man this is helping.
Glad to hear it!
GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
I am big fan of your you teach very perfectly I love it 💗
Thank you!
I am now trolling you. I hope you now feel “trolled”. Get trolled. PS, I am a troll.
What is the Gospel of Salvation? 🤔 Before knowing it, you have to accept the bad news: ⚠ ONE ONLY SIN ALREADY CONDEMNED US AND DESTITUTED US FROM THE GLORY OF GOD ⛔ (Romans 6:23 The wages of sin is death 💀; Ezekiel 18:4 the soul that sinneth, it shall die ⚰; James 2:10 whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all 🤦♂). God wants you to understand your condition because of your sinful nature 🤕. THAT IS REPENTANCE ➡ (a change of mind). But God did something wonderful through his Son to save us all from hell 🌈. THE GOSPEL IS: CHRIST DIED FOR OUR SINS! ✞ THE GOSPEL is in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4: "Christ died for our sins, He was buried and rose the third day according to the Scriptures" 📖. CHRIST SUBSTITUTED OUR SINS ON THE ETERNAL PUNISHMENT THAT WE DESERVED: HIS SOUL FOR OUR SOUL ❤. To be saved, you must have FAITH THAT CHRIST ALREADY PAID FOR YOUR SINS 🙏 and therefore you have eternal life 🔝. To be saved, you must be CERTAIN (Hebrews 11:1) that Christ already saved you because that is what God has promised in his Word and He doesn't lie 🙏. In Ephesians 2:8-9 apostle Paul says: "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast" 🎁. If you say: "Christ paid for my sins BUT I have to do the works, or give my life to Christ or any other thing to be saved", you have not believed with faith that Jesus already saved you and you think you can add something to your salvation 🤦♂. Works matter AFTER salvation, not in order to be saved, but because we are already children of God for discipline (Hebrews 12:7-8) and rewards (Matthew 6:19-21; 1 Cor 15:58) ONLY IF WE HAVE BELIEVED WITH FAITH
I didn’t hear a difference 😂
lol That’s ok just mess around with it
You must be deaf then
Guitar model?

awesome thank you Love these kinda of videos with the tabs. You rock!
haha thanks brotha
This might be the most underrated guitar trick ever.
aw man. thanks!
B.S. it's a wrong way!
Yes for next lot you have please
If you keep making videos with my technique as a non-example I’m going to start expecting royalties haha
🤣
Okay awful question. How do I stop getting the strings to stop making noise when I’ve moved on to a different string and pull away. It always makes a noise when I pull my finger away
great question actually. when i go to the next string, i mute the previous string (the one above the one im playing) with the tips of my fingers. so if for example im playing that 1st exercise and go to the first fret of the A string, i'm playing the first fret of the A string wile the tip of my index finger is also muting the E string. depending on what i'm doing, sometimes i'll use the palm or side of my right hand to mute the strings i'm not playing also make sure you're not yanking off the string too hard let me know if this helps
@ yes this does help actually I’ll have to try this a couple times though before it sinks in haha. Thanks so much! I’ve played a lot of instruments that don’t require a ton of finger coordination and reaching so the guitar is definitely a new challenge.
@@robynhenry430 yeah muting strings can be a bit awkward at first so don't beat yourself up if you dont get it right away. eventually you'll be able to do it without even thinking about it. just chip away at it little by little. good luck!
What exactly does this teach/practice? I’m all for practicing, but like… how often are guitarists doing static chromatic 8th note runs? What skill is this introducing? If you’re just trying to pluck and finger a string at the same time, wouldn’t just about any lick or riff do the same thing played at this speed? This dull atonal shit is why people hate to learn music, and it does absolutely nothing for training. If you’re going to do runs like this, at *least* make them actual scales or based on finding the correct notes or something. These chromatic walks are just… well they’re pretty much useless lol
Finger independence
for an extreme beginner this is for getting fingers loose. you would follow this exercise up by mixing up the order of fingers so 4-1-3-2, 1-3-2-4 and then could speed up as well (easiest fingering possible here since the notes don't matter) etc but I agree in two birds with one stone and just make it a scale run.
haha i feel ya. i just use it as a warmup. just like any other technique exercise to help build independence, finger strength, dexterity, etc. it's cool to switch up with patterns with different combinations too. but i get your point lol.
@@libraalbert91 yeah literally any other lick or phrase would accomplish this and give practical application while also being melodic and something a beginner would actually *want* to play. Just doing chromatic runs like this is good for… building chromatic runs like this. Which is cool if you’re Dillinger Escape Plan or Cave In, but practically useless for like 95% of guitarists. The video creator has said that they use this as a “cool” way to warm-up, and I can’t argue whether something is or isn’t cool, because that’s completely subjective, and it certainly makes you move each finger and touch every string, so I guess it works as a “warm up” too. But the title isn’t “cool little warm up” or whatever, it’s “on steroids” like it’s some magic training tool.
@@frottery yeah like I said, I’m all for practicing, but this feels like one of those boring things you learn by rote that never actually translates to anything useful. Yeah, changing the fingerings and speed and stuff would be more beneficial, and might actually constitute the “on steroids” remark. As is, it’s just boring chromatic runs without purpose for *extreme* beginners. Like I could see someone doing this in an early lesson where they’re learning how to play to a metronome or something, but as-is, it serves little to no purpose for nearly all guitarists…
Isnt this just ‘the spider excercise’ ? Hows that on steroids? Great video for the excercise though 👌🏻
thanks! i guess there are different variations. normally i start beginners on a simple spider going up 1, 2, 3, 4 then back down 4, 3, 2, 1. but once they get that down i like to have them go all the way up the neck like this (on steroids lol). or you can even try different patterns (1, 3, 2, 4 for example). but i guess there are a lot of diff ways you can approach this exercise
You always show me problems I have without me even knowing. A true master
aw thank you! i'm glad these are helping!
Very helpful video and definitely some of the things I teach my students! Everyone needs different exercises as each student is unique!
Thanks! Yeah I agree!
All true IMO and experience. There are players that freefloat, not everyone can do that.
extremely grateful for this video!! really helpful! thank you ❤
🙏🏼
Always love playing open E
Yeah i love letting strings drone out
Does apply to acoustic guitar as well?
Yeah
Dude! Love it! Great tips and great job on/in the video. One of the most talented people I've had the pleasure of knowing!
Aw man. Thanks Patrick! Miss you dude
In exercise 3, key of g, why do you play f# on 3rd and 1st string instead of f? 3rd string 4th fret instead of 3rd fret and 1st string 2nd fret instead of 1st fret?
Because the G major scale has an F# in it: G, a, b, c, d, e, f#, g
Love it. ❤❤❤❤
:)
Bro played sare gama!
Been slowly digesting this one for weeks of practice. Thanks for the great video!
yeah? how's it coming? and you're welcome!
Great vid TH. Any tips for a left handed player? Cheers
thank you! I don't have anything to say specifically to a left handed player because I teach them the exact same way as my right handed students!
@thetalenthousetx Great, good to know. Complete novice to guitar playing, but everyone seemsvto be right handed
@@jankraan1 my dad is left handed but he plays guitar right handed. it just felt more natural for him. it's debatable whether you should play right or left handed, but I say try both and see what feels more comfortable. maybe try a simple finger exercise and a couple easy chords both ways and see what feels best. if they feel equally awkward, I say go with a right handed guitar just because you have more to choose from when you're buying. but if you feel more comfortable left handed (or you've already started like that) just stick with that and all the other info will be the same
@@thetalenthousetx Thanks for the follow-up and tips, much appreciated!
Editing and production quality is outstanding, not mentionning the content. You deserve way more followers, but you cant at least count me in. Keep it up, and thank you for your work and wise advice.
thank you so much!
thst's right
I find it pretty much impossible to intonate chords like this where you're fingers are all on the same fret cause they're always slightly different distances from the actual frets so they're all different degrees of flat.
Hmm and I’m assuming the intonation on your gtr is fine?
It’s based on the string coming in contact with the fret from what I understand not about your finger placement within the fret it just helps if it’s closer. I don’t have any issues
Bar 5th fret 🎵🎶🎸???
Yep you can also do a major barre chord shape on the 5th fret of the low E string 👌🏼
