Regenerative Agriculture with Stuart McAlpine | #16
On this episode, we're joined by Stuart McAlpine, a pioneering regenerative broadacre farmer from Buntine in Western Australia's northern wheatbelt region. With 40 years' experience in agriculture, Stuart has long championed an integrated approach that improves ecosystem health while boosting productive farming systems.
A co-founder and inaugural president of the influential Liebe Group, Stuart has been at the forefront of driving sustainable agricultural change. He instigated the Regional Repopulation Plan, chaired the Regional Repopulation Advisory Committee, and serves on the advisory committee for RegenWA.
Stuart transitioned to regenerative biological farming over 15 years ago and has seen remarkable improvements in soil and plant health by using biostimulants and decreasing reliance on artificial inputs. His acclaimed work, including presenting at COP28 and Regen10, demonstrates that environmental and economic success go hand-in-hand.
With a vision of revitalizing rural communities across WA, Stuart shares his decade-spanning journey of caring for the land and local environment while producing high-quality food. Join us for an inspiring conversation on the Mind, Body, Soil podcast.

Satirical decimation of Hubris!
A lot of it is there would be a lot of people losing a lot of money if we stopped the way we are doing it
As a land user the most valuable (and human only) contribution is to know the hows and whys of using compost teas and sprays. Relatively cheap, requires applications of knowledge nature hasn't directly provided and provides a huge impact on the crop or paddock which compounds into its next use: assuming no ignorance-based abuse to the soil in between. Scalable AF. YT Sources: Dr. Elaine Ingham
Love the work

I'm new to re-gen farming and this session answered all my current questions. Ill be back for more soon as you do.
The most common sense discussion I've heard in a while. Great stuff Stuart😊
Epic 🫶🙌
Great work Ian and Dianne 🙏🙌
Folic acid is not naturally occurring anywhere so it should not be used as a metric in nutrition and about 50% of the population can’t use it and is harmed by it
I'm just 25 min in, and this is the best explanation of circadian biology, light therapy, and quantum health (and I've been rrsearching all these topics with all my spare time the past few weeks). Thank you.
David asked whether UV could pass through tree coverage I think, not sure I understood Dr Jalal's answer - or whether the broader UV rays can penetrate through light cloud cover?
Brilliant. Time to relearn or reexamine '101' on personal health-care. Vital info! Great to supply a Transcript!
@25:00 This point is so deep and so complex, but so essential.
Love this and what we are missing is curiosity and humility….very true
Looks at us as if we had two heads 😮
nice implements
What types of compost extract would you use for strictly perennial pastures? C:N ratios? And Bacterial to Fungal Ratios? Do you have any recourses for answering these type of questions? Thank you.
G'day Riley, great question! Unfortunately, I'm not qualified to answer this. However, I can refer you to Dr Mary Cole's & Dr Elaine Ingham's work to find out more about compost specifics. The compost they are referring to in this particular video is a Johnson-Su composting set-up that Ian & Di have constructed themselves on their farm. They are using this system to make a fungal-dominant compost. I can't share the C:N ratio because as far as I'm aware, they haven't had it tested. Thanks for watching!
I’m glad l watched this, I’m a regenerative ag farmer and about to put in 200 eucalypts for shelter and to increase the soil depth, but was concerned about the fire risk. Had never considered oak. Great idea
I’m glad you got some value out of it! Rowan‘s approach to forestry is truly incredible
Ecological agroforestry Is a proven success. It reverses desertification and deforestation Prove me wrong bs .❤😂🎉
Absolutely fantastic to see from the Entire Earthlove Global team Australia
Stop chemicals. Need corp and gov out of farming, ranching, and fishing.
Need govt and corp out of farming. Stop using chemicals.
Are farmers forced to use chemicals?
Stop with chemicals. Animals and plants work together rotation animals feeding areas let the land regrow.
Is someone forcing farmers to use chemicals?
Nice
Spitting truths here once again 🤙
Que increíble explicación de lo que es la Salud Cuántica - Salud Circadiana. Gracias!!!
Holy smokes this was mind blowing. So much of our salvation in not in the skys but within the earth herself. Question is; can we become humble enough to reach down instead of crying up.
God created the universe and Adam and Eve with perfect regenerative bodies in the garden of Eden. The hand of a "great designer" is evident in the complexity of all of creation. We just have to open our eyes. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, abd without him was not any thing made that was made In him was life, and the life was the LIGHT of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." ESV John 1:1-5 Man has totally screwed up our immune systems with vaccinations which has led to a huge surge in childhood diseases. Read the recent book: "Turtles All The Way Down - Vaccine Science and Myth" and the book "Vax-Unvax: Let the Science Speak" by CHD to learn more.
Jay is a legend! Fascinating Stuff 🤯
Great podcast!!!! Easy to understand yet can change your life. More people need to hear this message.
Precisely, and the same also goes for grasslands.
Couldn’t agree more, went from fighting Mother Nature to working harmoniously with her, and got my biggest harvests ever doing it. No other way imo.
Yep, Mother Nature makes in one day what would take man 500 years to produce, and for 1/1,000,000th the amount of effort taken to make it happen. You’ve got a subscriber here thank you for this! Keep fighting the good fight 🤜🤛
what a video! Non-farmer here. But how do the sheep know to do 'toileting' on the bare, compacted dirt?
Dianne Haggerty said that the sheep have their nose to the ground and can probably smell the difference from the microbes in the degraded soils. Many years ago I worked at a feedlot with about 2000 animals on feed and I was responsible to make sure that the feed bunks had feed. We would feed 2 times a day and I had a notepad that I kept track of how much feed to mix up per animal per pen. You didn't want them to run out of feed because that can cause acidosis in the rumen, but in winter you didn't want a great excess that would freeze in the minus 30-35F weather. It was a bit of a balancing act. The owner came to me and asked me about a number of pens that had cleaned up the feed run of corn barley silage. I took out the note book and said that all the pens were on an increasing amount per feeding and I couldn't seem to match what they required from say 5 days ago. He said a winter storm is coming. He and the cattle were right. The cattle about 3 days before the storm would start to gorge themselves and the morning before the storm they only ate about 3/4 of what was put out. Had to hand shovel about 9 tons of silage as waste so it would freeze to the concrete feeders. Animals know things that we humans don't perceive. And we think we are the smart ones?

I absolutely love this is discussion! Thanks for sharing!

Wise words from a wise man 👏🏻
For our U.S. friends the soil in the wheat belt can be quite sandy, so lots of fertilisers are usually used to gain a good crop, there are parts that have a red soil, but again its usually a poor soil, farming techniques have changed a lot in Western Australia, lots of farmers dont plough the land and most have stopped burning off the crop stubble, another issue with the soil is it can be highly hydrophobic. Its only just become Spring here and already the pass two days have been in the mid 30'sC ( 95F), Summer temps are in the mid to high 40's C. ( 110F to 120 F )
Thanks for adding some context for our US farmers James 💪
30C is 86F and 40C is 106F, don't get me wrong it's hot but it's not that hot (120F is 49C)
@@Tasmantor I was at work one summer and it was 50C in the shade, I dont know where you are but it gets hot in W.A. out in the wheatbelt.
Just the beginning..Wait till it goes suburban.
