Love's in Need of Love Today
Stevie Wonder's 1976 "Songs in the Key of Life" is one of my favorite albums of all time. This video is a tribute to his title track, "Love's in Need of Love Today." If you listen carefully, you'll notice that I played and harmonized part of Wonder's vocal improvisation from the end of his recording.
Here is Wonder's statement about the song's meaning: "The concept I had in mind was that for love to be effective, it has to be fed. Love by itself is hollow. [...] When I was finished [recording the song], I listened to the playback and realized the song was perfect to open the album [Songs in the Key of Life], to set the entire tone. [...] It's still emotional for me. When I performed it in New York recently, I broke down. I've seen people come and go, and live and die, cry and laugh. It all came rushing back."
In this recording, I'm using my Fender FM 60-E 5-string mandolin with custom pickups made by Pete Mallinson. The signal chain is a Polytune 3 tuner, Benson Germanium Boost, EHX Parallel Mixer with a Benson Germanium Fuzz, Analogman Envelope Filter, and A+ Astronaut III in the loop, and then an EHX Grand Canyon, an MXR/Third Man Records Double Down, and the NUX Amp Academy with a Fender Delux Reverb amp and cab sim. From there, I went XLR out into my Allen and Heath Zedi8 mixer.

What a Wonderful World (5-String Electric Mandolin)
มุมมอง 330ปีที่แล้ว
"What a Wonderful World" was written by Bob Thiele and George David Weiss, and it was first recorded by Louis Armstrong. Here is my arrangement of it for 5-string electric mandolin.
Here Lies the Heart (Andy Timmons), for 5-String Mandolin
มุมมอง 262ปีที่แล้ว
Andy Timmons is a guitar legend who wrote "Here Lies the Heart." Here is my arrangement of it for 5-string electric mandolin. The mandolin I'm playing is a Fender FM 60-E. The pickups were custom made by Pete Mallinson (of Almuse) before he retired. If this video gets 1000 views, I'll make another one where I describe my signal chain.
Electric Mandolin Free Improvisation
มุมมอง 3153 ปีที่แล้ว
Over the past year, I've been playing around with a few riffs. Instead of my usual chord melody stuff, I decided to dial in a fuzzy overdriven sound with my pedals and Fender mandostrat, turn on my camera and mic, and see what comes out of a free improvisation session. I like the result because it has a mixture of a lot of different styles that I'm into. There are blues riffs, things that remin...
Autumn Leaves: Mandolin Chord Melody
มุมมอง 4763 ปีที่แล้ว
Autumn Leaves was written in 1945 by Joseph Kosma, and it is one of my favorite jazz standards. It is an important piece to study because it shows lots of basic concepts quite clearly: movement to IV, ii-V-I progressions, and the relative major/minor relationship. I hope you enjoy my chord melody arrangement on mandolin. As usual, I am playing my modified Fender 4-string electric mandolin. This...
In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning (Mandolin Cover)
มุมมอง 5293 ปีที่แล้ว
"In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning," is one of my all-time favorite standards. This is my second chord-melody transcription. I hope you like it! I'm playing it on a Fender Mandostrat that I modified with an Almuse pickup and a Les Paul Jr. Harness from RS guitarworks. I'm using two amps. I eq-d my Monoprice 15-Watt tube amp to have a lot of warmth and thickness, and I'm using a Roland (soli...
Early Autumn for Mandolin
มุมมอง 2063 ปีที่แล้ว
This is my chord melody arrangement of Early Autumn for electric mandolin. Early Autumn was written by Ralph Burns and Woody Herman. Johnny Mercer wrote the lyrics. This video represents a lot of 'firsts' for me. I started studying jazz mandolin about three months ago (my background is in classical violin). This is the first jazz standard I've ever arranged for mandolin and the first video I've...
DIY On Off Foot Switch
มุมมอง 7583 ปีที่แล้ว
Many guitar amps have a jack where you can insert an on-off foot switch for turning on and off effects. These switches are mechanically very simple and easy to make yourself. In this video, I'll show you how I made mine. Note: I said that it doesn't matter which of the jack lugs you solder to which of the switch lugs because I had already selected two switch lugs and soldered them in the previo...
DIY Volume Pedal
มุมมอง 4.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Do you want to get the sound of a loud tube amp at levels that are suitable for a bedroom? Throwing a volume pedal into your amp's FX loop allows you to cook the preamp tubes and then lower the amplitude of the signal before it gets to the power tubes. In this video, I'll show you how to build one.
Fender Electric Mandolin Upgrade
มุมมอง 2.1K4 ปีที่แล้ว
I upgraded the pickup and pots in my electric mandolin. This video shows you what it sounded like before and after. The pickup was from almuse (www.almuse.co.uk/mandolin_pickups.html) and the pots were from RS Guitarworks (rs-guitarworks.myshopify.com/). The result of the upgrade was that the mandolin has an even tone across all four strings and a richer sound. I would highly recommend this upg...
Is this a reissue>? Did you replace the pickup yourself? really nice jam
Thanks, I appreciate it! This is a reissue, and it's my favorite 4-string electric mandolin. If you're curious about the pickup, I have another video explaining what it is and why I replaced it (I replaced it myself): th-cam.com/video/h1mLNXM_WjA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=dS3rcfABZ5ciX5hR
@@aaronyarmelmusic6645 very nice, I picked up a 66 off reverb and just getting acquainted w things
LOUDER! Break windows and bleed ears !!
exactly what I needed, thank you!
Nice arrangement.
Thank you!
Thanks for posting and your explanation of the track..
Thank you!
So I got this brand new vangoa a style electric mandolin but the issue with it is that both Gs and Ds strings sounds weak(quieter) and the As and Es strings sounds louder. Any idea how to fix that?
There are a few things that could be causing this issue. I’d start by doing a basic setup as if it was a normal acoustic mandolin. Check the action; is the bridge too high? Make sure that the strings are high quality strings (sometimes budget mandolins ship with bad strings). If those changes don’t fix it, then you’ll need to adjust your pickup. I believe that your mandolin doesn’t allow you to individually adjust the magnets, but you may be able to adjust how high the pickup is by turning the screws on either side of it. Raising the pickup on the g-string side will make the lower strings louder. If none of those solutions work, then there’s something wrong with your pickup. I’d take it back and see if they’ll give you a new one without that issue.
Very Good!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you!
Excellent! I love your arrangements, they are superb! Also, the tone sounds amazing!
Thank you!
Well done!!!
Thanks!
Interesting sound.. i was how a mandolin gone electric and distorted would sound
Aaron, this is a lovely interpretation of a beautiful melody.
Thank you!
What if you used an 250 or 500K?
Generally a higher value potentiometer will make the tone brighter by letting more of the high frequencies through. You should experiment with different values and pick the one that sounds the best to your ears using your equipment. When I made this video I didn’t know as much as I do now, and if I did it again I would probably use a 250k pot.
it only works on the fx loop?
No, you can put it wherever you want. I just wanted one in the fx loop so that it would be between the preamp and power amp stages.
@@aaronyarmelmusic6645 So could it go from the guitar to that"pedal" and then to the amp? without taking out overdrive? and thx for the quick response
@@hugofioliveiraYou’re welcome! And yes it can. That pedal is basically the same thing as the volume knob on a guitar or mandolin.
@@aaronyarmelmusic6645 thx.! I have another question... Can that handle 65W? While putting that pedal on the fx loop? Or no worries on that circuit?
@@hugofioliveira I’m not sure what would happen if you ran 65 watts into the potentiometer I used on that build, but that shouldn’t be a problem for this application. The preamp section on a guitar amp doesn't amplify the signal anywhere near as much as the power amp does (I wouldn't recommend sticking this between the power amp and the speaker).
How much did you pay for it?
The mandolin itself was about $250, but they're more expensive now. The pickup is listed as £38.99 (I ordered it in the US and it cost me $61.58 (USD) including shipping from the UK). The harness was $54.95 (I paid $64.91 with shipping).
Enjoyed it. Kept my attention for the nine minutes. Thought it started off with an Eastern feel, but then went back to a more traditional Western feel. Did not recognise any snippets of tunes I knew and that surprised me. Well done. Your instrument and setup sound great to my ears.
Another nice electric jazz mandolin post. Please keep making them.
Thank you! It means a lot to hear that!
That was great. Nice to hear some nice electric mandolin.
