I watched your reviews in reverse order (i just finished watching the 3.0+1.0 movie and started your reviews there and just worked back lol) but im curious what made you say so confidently that these movies were a standalone upgrade of the tv series when you hadnt seen the others? As an Eva pilot Shinji will forever be in a child like age but will be mentally very mature(if he is not already)...so what Mosato did can be seen as a form of mercy or pity (just an opinion)

The part that made me feel weird is that before the scene where Ritsuko tells Misato about having Shinji give Rei's card to her, Gendo mentions that Shinji and Rei are meant to be closer together, as if the whole apartment scene was set up somehow by NERV.

This is the best review of Misato I've ever seen. This will be a recommendation. I never thought that I would live to see the day, that an EVG fan would actually try to understand the anime. Good job.

Mari is the relationship Shinji wanted from Asuka, by the end of Rebuild, Asuka, and Shinji dont need each other romantically, what is dificult to pin, is what she does that Shinji wanted. HE BARELY KNOW HER LMAOOOOOOOO

no, rei is based and autism pilled

it is important to note not merely the fact that she solicits sex with shinji on its own. we must also recognize that she does this in her apartment, where he lives. she had already provided him with a living space, a gesture of financial power. shinji himself does not have many other places to go, and is hence trapped. misato didn't have to respect shinji's outright rejection then and there. she could have threatened to throw him out of her place if she wanted to. she was not his parent and hence had no legal obligation to him. all of the context given suggests if not outright stating the image of abuse. she propositions him for sex knowing that he is grieving the loss of Rei. bear in mind that she likely knew somewhat about rei ayanami, since she had already learned more about the human instrumentality project, yet chose to not disclose any of that too him. perhaps it was top secret information, but given the fact that rei shows up the very next day, seemingly alive, it likely wasn't that much of a secret. ultimately mistato doesn't really see shinji as anything more than a tool. she is not concerned with his well being or safety, just with his ability to perform. she propositions him for sex not because she wants to comfort him but to comfort herself, as she is grieving Kaji at that point in time and just wants some [redacted]. it is not merely histrionic behavior, but outright antisocial behavior, given the circumstances. in every scene where she assaults shinji in this way, shinji is trapepd and not provided with any means of escape. it is quite literally the image of CSA to a T. i think you went right with this video for the most part, though i would have done some deeper analysis myself before looking into histrionic behaviors and traits. i also don't believe that misato helps shinji much at all. shinji doesn't demonstrate interest in her except in the vague and loose dream sense, and even if he did it would not have been okay. one of the better scenes was shinji dismissing some of the comments his male peers were making about her, and it was one of a few things the show actually seemed to get right about this particular topic. i don't believe that misato helped shinji into adulthood either. CSA at the end of the day is not some pearly gate of maturity and adulthood. shinji comes into adulthood without people he can trust, because he's already experienced the feeling of being exploited by misato. at one point in the show he outright states that the only person he can rely on anymore is asuka. misato ultimately hurts him more than she helps him. for what its worth, i do think end of evangelion gave a better ending than the last two episodes, because it didn't involve any guiding hand whatsoever, a promise of an uncertain future with a stable life far beyond reach at that point in time. Shinji and Asuka are the only ones left because they are the ones with the greatest capacity for change.

Not a good movie. Most interesting things about the lore have not been explained and some things just can't make sense, like the infinite sea of EVAs that already have armor, are Adam based and for some reason have giant human skulls...

I think I always subconsciously connected with rei because of her obvious neglect but deep rooted want for love (familial and/or platonic). Rei is extremely strong, in that she suffers quietly and does her job well, but weak when it comes to knowledge; of herself, on how to connect with others, her role in the bigger scheme. No matter how much she's treated and acts as a puppet, she can't escape her humanity. Seeing her as submissive or a sex object is so reductive I can't even believe that's how others see her (never mind she's 14 to boot lol). Sometimes I think about Eva and wonder how it's even as widely popular as it is. The way I've seen average people talk about such a deep analysis of the human condition is baffling to me. Reducing it to waifus and "shinjis such a pussy", there's almost nothing to enjoy about evangelion in that lense in my opinion. It's the commentary on the nature of individual trauma and humanity as a whole, combined with its stellar visuals that makes the show great. I love rei because she deals with her awful situation as best she knows how to, better than some less unfortunate characters, while learning to explore herself, her wants, and her connection to others. Rei is best girl 💙

ooookay, so shinji's relationship is twisted afterall. he dates his auntie, his mother's friend. good. i feel better now. unfortunatelly, his aging was stopped for some time too so that relationship is ... less perverted now. Mari got younger, Shinji technically aged too, but his body had to catch up to his mental state. xD

What strikes me is that Angels are Aliens. So how many Alien races are there? So-called "God" is also an Alien, right? So nothing humans would achieve in the future. they managed to enslave Lilith. Why humans wouldn't surpass those gods??

Rei by far is my favorite character in evangelion and it's not even close. Rei actively tries and grows as a character. She does this even while knowing she is a replaceable person. She often shows emotional maturity putting the important things first. She's the only one to really act as a foil to Asuka. Letting Asuka's insults about her go unchecked not playing Asukas game. The only time being when Asuka is downing Shinji or calling her a doll. Then there is a side of the story that makes me wonder when it comes to Rei. Why does Rei live alone. Misato seems to care about the well being of the children. Yet Rei is left in a crappy apartment while very injured and could probably use help in her day to day life while in that bad of shape. Yet she's alone. But with Shinji and Asuka she moves them in day one no questions asked. Why? Little background things like that.

I don't think Rei Ayanami's initial appeal is anything more complicated then a male audience appreciating both strength and loyalty in a female character with a cute design. All of the weird and bizarre nonsense that the series is known for today was loaded into the back end of the first television series. The original TV series was aired on live television. Not binge watched episode by episode, back to back. In my mind the periodical timing in which the media was presented to the audiences of the time was foundational part as to why the character was so well received. That initial character arc between Shinji and Rei hit the mark so well that there was simply no way for the creative team to correct the narrative without destroying it completely.
