Ford 8n Steering Assembly Part 7
Final part. Thought it came out pretty well. Just make sure that you get a shim kit. Worst part of putting it back together was lining up the ball nut and the front sector gear. For the most part all you need to do is line up the marks on the gears and it falls back together. Adjust the lash on the gears and your done!

Time to start putting this thing back together. The upper steering shaft gets its new lower bearing race and upper bearing. Only two parts but at least we're putting it back together. Second part of the video is cleaning up the lower housing. That thing was filthy. Lot's of wire brush work. Finally broke down and decided to use the sandblaster. I've got a pressure pot type. Hate using it as its...

Disassembling the lower part of the steering box. Plenty of fumbling around and resorting to a short length of 2x4 to remove the steering sectors. Run into problems removing a nut from the lash adjustment. Finally, I figure out how to remove the lash adjustment screw. There's really not much to this assembly once it's apart. It'll be quicker if I ever have to take apart one of these again now t...
Ford 8n Steering Assembly Part 4

Part 4 of the rebuild. This one's a bit long. Starting to put some of the parts back together. Included my failed attempts to get the ball nut put back together. But I eventually get it. Having never put one back together it was a bit of trial and error. Using some grease would have been better than WD40 which, while it kept thing well protected from rusting, made all the little ball bearings a...

Hi, guys! Shot this video the day after the big snow we received on January 13, 2014. Snow depth was around 26 or 27 inches at my house. I was sure glad that I had a snow blower as it really would have sucked to shovel all this stuff by hand. Took VDOT a couple of days to get the road cleared as they had quite the job of it. Enjoy!

Replacement Deck for Simplicity Lawn Tractor
I imagine they’re still picking up bearings off the factory floor. 😂
Where did you find the parts? Except for the music dubbed in, great video.
Got most of them from Just8Ns. But there are other site's out there that have parts.
Could you tell me when you bought the rebuild kit thank you
💪 Thanks
Can these parts fit Oliver 550
I've no idea. Wouldn't expect they would.
where to purchase cup and retainer
Same question
I think this fellow did a great job with this video verry clean
Would have been good if you showed how it went together, with the marks lining up, for those of us who want to repair ours, that haven't done one at all.
Thanks for the videos. I have to open up my Dads gearbox seeing that it only turns one way. Turn it the other way and the shaft turns out 🤷♂️ thanks again for your time!
Painful to see China on those new parts 😢
Usa is significantly more $
Good job
I replaced mine a few years ago! 38 in deck, got replacement from Simplicity dealer. It was around $500.00. New one is already starting to flake off some rust when I scrape it out. I started to keep it cleaner now as I want it to last for the life of the tractor!
The I&T manual says the ball nut and worm shaft are not available separately .
Where did you get it and how much did it cost?
Ordered it through my local Simplicity Dealer. Think it was around $500.
I put mine back together, can only turn left, how can I remedy this ? Thanks
There are alignment marks on the gears. Those have to be right. Another possibility is that the balls in the worm block aren't right. Don't know if you tore it down that far.
@@InquisiitorWH44K I took it back apart and jacked up the front to get the weight off the front end Then I pushed the Front wheels completely to the right and reassembled, now it’s working perfect I appreciate the comment/help I will most likely be back on here from time to time it’s got alot of little bugs , But overall I’m very satisfied with the tractor I feel like I got a great deal on it and about five pieces of equipment
Does the shaft have to be lunges up maybe halfway when you put it in.... like in a certain position with the tires ??
How do you check it for the fluid level
Do you have the part number for the rops on ur ferris mine is the same one and I can't find one for it?!
Number: 57528940
Sooooo, I sat throught the most painful youtube video to find out how you adjust the wormgear. Thanks for wasting my time dude.
A little less talk
My husband and I learned little from your steering wheel repair. Wish you had shown how the worm gear went back into the gearbox and aligned. Also, where you got your parts list and purchased them.
Great series! Have watched it twice. Bought a steering shaft, ( old one broke) I am not taking out the sector gears. The thought is they are already aligned with each other, I just need to align the Ball nut to the sector gears. What am I looking for with the shim seats. ( min. axial movement? Do I start by having the ball nut at the bottom of the ball screw? half way up? Any tribal knowledge on this would be great. Again thanks for the time spent on this.
Sorry to hear that yours broke. I think, getting the ball nut back onto the shaft with all of the bearings was the hardest part of the reassembly. My steering unit has over a quarter of turn slop before the rebuild. Got it down to pretty much nothing by adjusting the sectors. The shop manual was pretty helpful with rebuild. Those little ball bearings can be a pain. Make sure you don't loose any. As far as where to start the ball nut I think it was half way up but it seemed that part was pretty easy to get back together. It was getting the ball nut back on the steering shaft that was the pain. Good luck!
@@InquisiitorWH44K Thanks for the info. We bought the assembly ( steering shaft and assembly) Thinking the ball nut half way up would be the center of the steering Also got copies from the IT manual on adjusting the sectors. Bought the seals and felt dust washers for the Pittman arms. Expect to get this back in business before the end of the month. Hey, again my thanks for putting these videos together.
@@InquisiitorWH44K Thanks ! Kevin for this vid. series , i'm looking at possibly my first tractor , 8n , purchase , but steering is really bad . My question -- the shop manual you refer to in the above comment that was helpful in the rebuild , could you tell me the name of it & where you got it , and any other ones you needed / used . Thanks in advance for your time -- Cyril
@@cyrilbrun8764 I've got the I&T shop manual. But you should be able to just do a search for 8n Shop Manual and get what you need.
This video was such a relief to me. I now know that I am not the only person who has to fumble around with something before figuring it out. I have been doing mechanic work for 50+ years and it still happens occasionally. The fumbling always humbles me. Like you, I do not give up and finish the job, but honestly, you seem to be more patient than me. Thank goodness you did not edit out your mistakes. I am serious but have to admit that I had a few laughs along the way. Well really I laughed until tears were flowing and my wife wanted to know what I thought was so funny. Thank you for this video series.
There is no any problem in varm and lock why are you dismantling it
Balls are new or old?
Is you used equal numbers of balls in Upper and lower lock?
any idea how to get the race out of the bottom of the gear box where this bottom shaft bearing sits?
I think the dry ice method would work. My bottom race was fine so I decided to leave it.
There is a frost plug on the bottom of the gear box, with it removed you can push the race out from the bottom..
Does anybody know where to put the 90W gear oil, and do you have to remove the hood to expose the gearbox to lube it?
Thanks for all the time you put this video together. I'm sure a lot of guys are nnow going to respect the steering box more and more like me. I'm afraid to touch that box and hope I never have to repair anything there, but the least I can do is grease it. For my 8N, do I use grease, or 90 W oil. I read somewhere and my notes say use Cornhead pourable high EP grease, another guy says to use 90 W oil. What's the real answer? Thanks again.....thumbs UP!
You are welcome. I figured I didn't have anything to loose with taking a shot at rebuilding mine. For the lubrication question, either should be fine since there's not a lot of motion going on in the steering box like a rear differential or axle. Cornhead grease is specially formulated for agricultural gearboxes in implements and supposedly maintains protection at temperature. It turns into a semi liquid when hot and then returns to a grease consistency when it cools down. At least that's what I gathered from my reading of it's properties. Figured that it'd protect my little steering box for as long as I'll have it.
How much for a replacement deck
Kevin zeitz Great link Man helped a lot, thanks
Was that the fourth valley of the gears? which side of the valley to make sure the gears align to the right side?
Which side does each gear go on and what number is the tooth to align each gear together or do you just center the teeth? I took mine apart and forgot which side the shaft goes in to each other. How do you align the ball sterring gears on the shaft to the teeth on the two side shaft?
Check this PDF out. It's what I used. Pretty much has everything needed. www.ntractorclub.com/howtos/pdfs/Steering-Box-Late-8N-Steering-Rebuild.pdf
Need a diagram of that . for the pulley wheels can you help.ted@kcweb.net
Great series! How much gear oil did you use? Thanks!
Didn't use gear oil. Went down to the local John Deere dealer and got some of the green corn head grease and packed it full. It's a specially formulated grease for gear boxes.
Great job on these videos. I really appreciate it! Jim@VintageGraceTexas.com
RTV will not seal because gear lube as well as transmission fluid will reject any RTV silicone over a short period of time. If you use anything here use Permatex gasket seal here.
Dry Ice in Acetone shrinks the bearing race while the Acetone prevents ice crystals to form while the dry ice shrinks the race as well as prevents the Acetone to boil off so the race will pretty much drop in.
Nice and informative video series! Where did you get all your rebuild parts from? I seen the packages on video 2, but couldn't really read them.
Good Times Huntin' TV Dennis Carpenter Reproductions in Charlotte, NC
This video was worth watching. Some things I had already been through but the re-assembly was not working well. The book I had on the Ford tractor (8N 1950) did not tell me how to sink the two sectors so that the arms were straight down when finished. I took mine apart one more time and found the notches, lined them up and it worked perfect. By the way, don't mess with 90 weight gear oil, use a grease that pours like honey, that way the seals won't be leaking either. Thanks for your work on here.
Dude - scrap the music on your next tutorials !!! we watch to LEARN something - not for entertainment. If we wanted music, we would go to the music channel. other than, YOU DONE GOOD and THANK YOU for your time.
hi, I want to know where you ordered the parts for this. I have a 73 2000 and I need these parts. yesterday my son came in the house and told me the steering went out of the tractor, I went to look at it and if the wheel is turned left or counter clockwise the whole steering shaft moves up and if you turn it right it screws back in
Charles Kelly Sorry to hear of your troubles. You can find parts at either Stiener (www.steinertractor.com/) or Dennis Carpenter (dennis-carpenter.com) My tractor is a 52. Each site has a pretty good online catalog.
Charles Kelly thank you for sharing, I have an I&T manual and it shows the assembly but its nothing like watching someone work on it
Charles Kelly So true. The cut away drawings in the I&T manuals can be helpful but require some studying sometimes.
I have the same problem with my Ford 8n. What did you do to fix it
Where is your vid on putting it all together and showing how it performs afterwards? Is it forthcoming?
Jim Buford Funny you should mention that. Just put together the next installment. Not an excuse for the slow posting but spring came and the grass never stopped growing and when you have twelve acres there's always something needing to be done. The steering box is awesome and ultra smooth. Only problem is, now I've got to do something with the rest of the tractor! To think this started with a 6 to 12 volt conversion. My next steps are to redo all the dash and throttle part and cleanup where the steering assembly mounts. Have a nice new steering wheel, too!
How long before u put back together I need help on mine
James Hartline I've finished it. Just a matter of getting the videos edited and published. Where are you at on yours?
nice job so far.
john hempstead Thanks! Sorry it's taking so long to get more out.
the video would have been better if you had not tried to play the music at the same time as you were talking. Otherwise, I like your narration. I have an 8 N and would like to see more repair videos as I am going to update mine this Summer. Thanks
Thanks, been messing with Cyberlink's Power Director on a very basic level and wanted to play around with some music to see how it worked out.
I hope your still working on the steering box. Your right, there is no videos showing how to do this. I have to rebuild the early box on a 1948 8N. I'm rootin for ya. Look forward to seeing more
Yep, It's actually all done. Just have to edit it together. Hopefully, it will be understandable. The actual process wasn't really all that bad. Smooth as butter now and it looks better than new. Which means I'm going to have to clean and paint the rest of the tractor!
Whats the song in the first mission?
Total Eclipse of the Heart - Bonnie Tyler
Thanks
Thanks for checking out my vid and the like.
nice! left a like :)
