Artillery and air strikes pounding all around, Arthur Viera crouched at the bottom of his foxhole, firing an M79 "Thumper" into the waves of enemy overrunning his platoon.
Suddenly platoon leader Lieutenant Kroger was in the open, yelling at Viera to help defend the platoon's left sector; but by the time he reached him, Kroger was already dead, and Viera himself would soon be wounded.
At the battalion command post, Lieutenant Colonel Hal Moore was increasingly concerned; would the survivors of Charlie Company hold out, or would the NVA overrun the cavalrymen, the landing zone, and decimate his whole battalion?
