wild feature suggestion: a slider (with custom min/max) to dial in a number. would be kinda fun to send the temp value to my heater or set the brightness of a lamp in % :D
Yeah, something like this is actually on the roadmap. But it's pretty far in the future :)
@@simonschneegansis there a roadmap we could follow somewhere?

How can i run it with windows startup ?
You do not have to ask the same question everywhere :). It's the same process as for any other application. There are hundreds of articles about this on the internet. For instance: www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000124550/how-to-add-app-to-startup-in-windows-10
Tell me, please, is it possible to somehow make this program run together with Windows?

@@simonschneegans Sorry for that =) Many apps have this setting by default, so I thought maybe I just couldn't find this option. Thanks for answering and such a cool app♥
i have a problem, (maybe im just stupid but..) I can't set it up key-bind, on Windows you can assign a keybind directly in Kando, but on hyprland they give you an ID that you have to configure in the hyprland config, but there is no command written anywhere with which I can configure this key-bind.. if you read this comment, I want to ask you to give me a command with which I can make Keybind to open the menu, thanks in advance
It's all documented on the bottom of this page: github.com/kando-menu/kando/blob/main/docs/installing.md Basically you need something like: bind = CTRL, Space, global, kando:<trigger-id>
@@simonschneegans Thanks!
thx, thats amazing
Hi, name of the distro ? (arch linux ?)
Ubuntu 24.04.
Hi Simon, may I know if there is any guideline for adding new application in the menu? Like adding discord in the menu
This depends on your operating system. On Windows, the easiest way to find the command is * Right click the launcher in your start menu -> choose "Open File Location" * Right click the file -> "Properties" * Copy the "Target" path * Create a new command item in Kando and paste it there.
How do you keep window under the cursor active?
Sorry, but I think I do not understand your question. Can you elaborate a bit more?
@@simonschneegans (for example) I use Super + X to toggle fullscreen mode for a particular window, but for this to work I need that window to remain active, i.e. focused. When I call the pie menu, the window stays focused, but not until I move the cursor.
@@danizimo Ahh, now I understand. And well, it's not possible to keep input focus in the original window as Kando requires input focus as well. However, the "Simulate Hotkey" item in Kando has an "Execute Delayed" checkbox which you can check to simulate the hotkey after input focus is restored to the previous window.
only thing i hate is built on electron. please save my ram
Huge new features!! Wooo kando 🥧
Thank you very much. I would like to know how to automatically launch Kando app on Windows startup?
Just like any other app. Google will tell you the details, but basically you have to copy the Kando desktop icon to %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup, I think.
huge one!
A Sims theme would be fun.
Especially if themes could add sounds on click.
Need Catppuccin mocha theme! Can it read colours from a config file?
The colors you choose in the settings are stored in a config file. Read more here: github.com/kando-menu/kando/blob/main/docs/config-files.md
非常好的软件,感谢更新!
Looks great. Nice job!
太棒啦!我觉得这款软件真的非常的好。不过想提个小小的建议可以吗?希望能开发出不同的语言包可以吗?
I am planning this for the 1.4.0 release. So translating will be possible in a few weeks, most likely.
not a fan of icon button . suggestion you give us another option like regular pie menu similar to blender or maya ? which only contains text and a rectangle button definitely going to watch this app . currently im using another app called autohotpie but im looking forward to your app since it looks modern to me and more intuitive to use . thanks for sharing and keep up the good work
Eu queria que esses efeitos só funcionassem ao fechar as janelas. Ao abrir as janelas não fica bonito.
fantastic app!
Fine, I'll switch to linux then.
When it would be possible to download it from software manager? 💚
What software manager are you talking about?
@@simonschneegans App store on Linux Mint :-)
AWESOME!!
Thank you! greetings from Argentina.
I really like your product, elegant idea and great implementation. I am glad I found it early enough. My question is how can I assign one of the menu items to start a program, for example "Photoshop". Unfortunately, I only found out about PowerShall a few hours ago and my script is written incorrectly. Start-Process "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2022\Photoshop.exe" Can you help me? Thanks
If the path is correct, it should usually be sufficient to use "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2022\Photoshop.exe" as command (including the quotes). If this does not work, feel free to join the discord server or open a discussion on GitHub so that we can properly fix this :)
Could the middle mouse button be used to activate the pie menu?
Not with Kando only, but there are many third-party tools which you can use to achieve this: github.com/kando-menu/kando/blob/main/docs/usage.md#%EF%B8%8F%EF%B8%8F-opening-menus-without-the-keyboard
Not sure how difficult this would be, but Kando feels like it would work perfectly with controllers. I use the steam deck in desktop mode all the time and it would be awesome if I could just hold a button and then flick the stick in different directions to access apps in Kando. This is actually already possible to recreate with steams mapping functions, but native support for controllers would be fantastic. I imagine it's a decent amount of work so I wouldn't be surprised if it's not possible atm.
Yeah, this would be awesome indeed. I do not have the hardware to develop this. But if you want, you could create a corresponding feature request on GitHub and maybe someone is willing to add this feature!
@@simonschneegans regardless of if someone would, thank you so much for all your hard work on this!
Running this on ubuntu on my macbook and for some reason the menu picks a random point on my screen to open from and not my cursor... any chance you know anything I could change in the config to fix this? would love to have it open on the mouse and avoid using the centered mode
No, I haven't heard of that issue before. Would you mind joining the Discord server [1] or open an issue on GitHub [2]? [1] discord.gg/hZwbVSDkhy [2] github.com/orgs/kando-menu/discussions
@@simonschneegansyea definitely I’ll send some vids to the discord first thing in the AM
Awesome man, I'm accompanying your work for years, its nice to see all this evolution, now i am imagining a Xbox 360 tracker of movements in front of your pc and identifying when your fingers touch each other trigging the menu, your hand goes up and when you release the finger touch it opens the selected item, its the future.
I also envision great potential with AR technology. Imagine using something like this with your hands in 3D space...
First time hearing about Kando. I'm a terminal guy and I'm not fond of animation pie GUI menu but the animation you made looks very slick I feel like I should try it. Killer for me is that you made this cross-platform. I use 3 platforms regularly and this is going to be a fun toy to show off :)
looks really cool
Hi, can you help with Kando? I noticed that it doesn't work quite correctly with SAI2 on Windows 10. I mean that if you run the program for the first time, everything will be fine, but after performing an action, it somehow stops working with this program the second time and beyond (the window itself stops being active - until you switch to the program itself). There is no such problem in Photoshop. And the update is just unreal - the program is quite cool and sometimes very convenient (I hope it will only get better for all platforms over time).
Would you mind joining the Discord server [1] or open a discussion on GitHub [2]? TH-cam is not really a good platform to track more complicated issues... [1] discord.gg/hZwbVSDkhy [2] github.com/orgs/kando-menu/discussions
@@simonschneegans My mind was blown. It turns out that even in this state, if you assign just one button instead of a combination to call Kando, SAI2 becomes an inactive window, But all the undo comands and macro - finally, it works as it should. Regarding this issue, I'll try to record a video using OBS later and share it, possibly through Discord. (Also, I'm sorry I can't respond quickly. I just have major problems with electricity.)
Wow! Is it possible to install it on Mint Cinnamon? *I'm very new to Linux
Yes, it should work! If you have questions, either join the discord server or open a discussion on GitHub! Both links are in the description above.
Holy shit this is crazy
This is amazing, thank you! I’ve written some suggestions in Discord.
I love Kando! The songs are so much fun, not only are you a great programmer but you have a great sense of humor too. 😂
This is an amazing update Simon! Any way to adjust animation speeds? Some workflows might require everything to go just a little bit faster or instantly if possible.
If you run Kando from source - which is pretty easy to do - you can adjust this. There's not yet a setting for it. If you need help, feel free to join the discord server! There are some folks running an animation-less version of Kando already :)
Obviously not the highlight of the release but the icon name tooltip is such a small but thoughtful feature.
Finally! Now with appimage, the party can begin!
1. how to make it to autostart with windows startup? 2. how to update Kando? update.exe in folder didn't work 3. can I somehow turn off "The marking mode"? Amazing app, Simon. Thank you a lot for your work!
I also have a big request: please make the settings menu appear in a windowed manner rather than full screen. At least optional. 😺
@@rondoo That's on the roadmap!
Thank you! 1. There's not yet a builtin option, but it's easy on Windows: support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/add-an-app-to-run-automatically-at-startup-in-windows-10-150da165-dcd9-7230-517b-cf3c295d89dd 2. Just download and install the newer version. It will replace your previous version but keep all settings. 3. Not yet. If you want to have this in a future version, you could open a feature request on GitHub!
Simply amazing work!
Well done!
nice!
Marking menu is so great! Just like Maya However, I heard there's some sort of patent on this kind of menus. Is it still true? Won't you get in trouble for implementing this?
Alias and later Autodesk have spread this information for years (for marketing purposes, I guess). However, simple marking menus like Kando have never been patented. There have been patents on the combination of linear and radial menus (like in Maya) and some advanced position-based multi-stroke variants. Here you can read the full story: donhopkins.medium.com/pie-menu-fud-and-misconceptions-be8afc49d870
blender has it and many many people use it inside huge companies, I think someone would've tried to sue blender for a patent infringement if it exists
Very interesting, as always. Thanks!
Thank you for the tutorial and updates.
Any plan to make it available in brew?
Here you go: formulae.brew.sh/cask/kando
Thank you!
love this tool! reminds me about world of warcraft Opie addon, same concept and i loved it!
It's cool that you mention OPie. My first pie menu for Linux was called Gnome-Pie [1] and was primarily inspired by OPie. Kando is different in that it supports nested menus and gesture selections. As such it's actually not a pie menu but a marking menu which was first described by Gordon Kurtenbach and Bill Buxton in the early nineties [2]. "Ordinary" pie menus such as OPie have been developed much earlier. Don Hopkins did a lot of research in this field [3].
