The 67 Baldwin/Burns comes to its final end
As we wrap up this series, looking back on my time with this Baldwin guitar brings up a mix of feelings. It's been tough and fun at the same time, kind of like a rollercoaster ride. But working on it with my kid has been a real highlight. Doing projects together is always a good time and creates some great memories. Overall, it's been a rewarding journey that I wouldn't change for anything.

The goal was to finish all of this in 2 videos, but due to personal reasons, I found myself getting behind on the project. Not to mention a lot of screw-ups along the way. It's definitely been a learning ...

A local shop I do repair work for took in this Silvertone bass on trade. So this is just me doing my normal presale cleanup and setup. Some of the main issues. Dirty pots, the nut was cut high, and really high action due to the neck pocket being wonky and needing a shim. Overall it came out playing nice for its price range and will make someone a decent starter bass. #bassguitar #BassMaintenanc...

How NOT to Repair a Broken Guitar Neck
มุมมอง 4289 หลายเดือนก่อน
View this as entertainment. Broken guitar necks are not something I ever do as a Tech, but I am trying to step out of my comfort zone and learn new things. I have done headstock breaks before, but never have I seen a break like this. I feel this should have been reinforced with splines, but the neck is so thin. The added surface would have been minimal. After making this video I added hardware ...

Good video man!!
Oh My...all I can say is: DECAF!
Very nice! And it makes sense. What is the size difference between the new zero fret and the original frets? Well done!
@johnrogers2826 standard frets on the guitar, and I used what was called med tall for the zero fret. Allowed me some room to lower the strings if needed, but it ended up being perfect for my needs. Oh, and I used a stainless fret for the zero. Helps with premature wear.
Thanks. I’m 65, been fixing and modifying guitars forever, and am considering doing it full time now.
What kit is this? I'm looking for a 594 kit.
@roadrash6565 I bought it from bargainmusician.com they are no longer in business:(
I thought tip #1 would be getting a badass pair of overalls like yours, where did you get them pls? :)
You are amazingly fast. You'd have to charge by the minute instead of hour. Superman luthier. Able to leap 7 guitars with a single bound. [ Only last one is crushed .. ] Oh yeah I had a Zero Glide brand zero fret installed on my Epi Dot. I tune all strings at the 2nd fret. Open strings will be a few cents flat, but a cent is something like 1/100th of a quarter note. James Taylor has a neat way of tuning ... check out his video. There is a tuner available that uses his tuning method
Just get a Zeroglide
That sander to the fretboard was like a war crime to me :(
Why? Seemed a pretty good idea to me.
I really would like to see a video on the zero glide. You are very talented at woodworking and most people are not. Including myself. Thanks I have watched videos on people building houses, interesting but I can't do it.
I tried using the zero glide kit once before. The nut broke during the installation. I am about to start back up making videos again. I may try it again and do a video on it.
The cheaper tool cut stainless steel tang?
Just standard frets. You could probably get by doing one job with it, but afterwards. The cheap one would be trash.
I understand the zero fret very well what I don’t understand is why the fret, not the nut but the first (zero) fret has been slotted?
You don't slot the fret. Only the nut.
The guitar came out great and nice playing at the end! Sorry to hear you lost your job but good to hear you we're able to find another job. I'm looking forward to the next project.
Thanks. I am gathering everything for the next project now. Also, I came to the conclusion that videos in parts don't do so well, lol. So they will be from start to finish all in one video.
You defeated the point when you slotted the zero fret!??
The nut still has to be cut. Its the guide for the strings to keep them from sliding off. Its cut below the 1st fret. So now the notation starts on the fret vs the nut.
Nice job brother, hard times to loose your job, glad you come out on top. That guitar is trippy as hell, sounds great too man, keep the vids coming. 🎸
Thanks. Wish I able to mic the sound through my Daw. My dog knows when it's time to upgrade. She eats the old model. Lol time to order a new mic. 🤣
@@GuitarRx hahaha, in that case I might feed my dog a couple Gibsons. 🤣🤣
Hey man! Glad to hear the job thing worked out better for you in the end. Scary changes any time you go through something like that.
Thanks. I just wish they gave upper management a heads up, but it's understandable. All about production till the very end. They did give a nice compensation package, but changing careers at 47. Scary lol
Lets go! Nice man! I missed part 2 somehow!
You’re way hard on yourself and created something out of nothing that other would have been in the burn barrel with a family connection to on top of that under less than normal life circumstances And it looks and sounds great! A+……👍
Thank you.
Proud of you! What a blessing to see you and that young man enjoying such a great hobby and expressing your creative gifts together this is magical.
Thank you. We had a blast. Every time he comes down to see me. All he wants to do is play guitar or help me work on them. So happy he is not a video game kid. LOL
Good to see your boy getting involved. I love it when my kids show interest. Looking forward to seeing this come together, that top is wild!
That guitar has so many memories with me and my father when i was a kid. So, having my son help will hopefully attach memories for him as well. It will be his when I pass one day.
Looking good my friend!!
Great restoration job so far. It's nice to see that these old classic guitars are being appreciated again these days and are worth bringing back to life! The 60's surf music with that unmistakable drip tone went well as a backing track for the video!
This one has been kicking my butt along the way, but it has totally been worth it. Love these old guitars.
Wow, nice paint work on that guitar! I can watch someone soldering electronics all day long, it’s one of my favorite parts of a guitar build.
I can't wait until it's completed. Went to fiberglass the back to cover the big hole, and I must have not added enough harder. Just now starting to cure after 3 days. Really didn't plan on this being a 3 part series. Lol
@@GuitarRx , I’m enjoying the build so I’m looking forward to part 3.

Very well put, and thanks for leaving that post. Good inspiration. Seems like everyday I'm screwing up but learning at the same time from it. It's definitely not the right path for someone that can't learn from mistakes. Mistakes are what help us grow or those bags of worms that pop up that you didn't expect. Just hate when it happens to a client's guitar. Thanks again. I appreciate you watching. One day I hope I can do it full time vs the part time affair I have with it.

@@GuitarRx yeah it’s just a different experience when you can walk into the building and find the guitar. Hold it in your hands and walk out the door with it. But I hear ya.
And pay for it somewhere in between!
It’s gotta be a great feeling to be restoring a guitar your dad left to you. Nice work so far and I’m looking forward to part 2.
I feel your sentiment. My first guitar I made was in 1982, made various instruments through the years and even worked at Charvel in 1985-1986. Right now, I am refurbishing my first guitar my parents bought me. A 1977 Paracho guitar they bought in Mexico. It was a tourist guitar but it means more to me right now than ever before.
Amazing how many memories an object can give us from the past. I'm sure your restoration will come out way better than mine. I know my father is looking down yelling at me about the fiberglass. 😆

In 2016, I knew I wanted to be a guitar tech, so I went to my only local shop to inquire about a job. The shop had a bad reputation for less than quality repairs. The owner said they didn't need anyone. So, I dove headfirst and opened my own guitar shop specializing in used guitars. I quickly built a reputation for being a good tech. In 2019 I sold the shop and continued to be the tech for the new owner. The big C virus shut them down permanently. I setup a workbench at home and do guitar repair full time. I couldn't be happier!
Thanks for sharing that. I love hearing stories on how others made their way into the business. Do you think having and working in a public shop helped when it came to trust and reputation when you moved the business to your home?
It definitely did! I had quite a few loyal customers, and word of mouth constantly brought in new customers.
What's the point ? ....i don't get what advantages a zero fret has (why hardly any guitars not Soviet after the 60s have them?)
Consistent action without the need of fine tuning the depth of the nut slots. Nut becomes only a guide for the strings and the fret becomes the action height. It's just a preference that I personally like on certain guitars.
ask a stupid question...get a smart answer.,thnx @@GuitarRx
What were you using at the end of the video? Is that Bondo?
Short hair fiberglass filler. Last stage before I switched to epoxy resin for the coloring.
Cool man, it's like an upside down ovation. Looking forward to seeing how it comes out.
Hopefully it will be finished by next weekend. I'll be swapping from polyester resin to epoxy. So I have to wait until the poly has completely gassed off or the epoxy won't stick. I'm attempting to do a resin art dye job on the front.
Nice one bro, thanks for the shout. :)
No problem. Thank you for telling me about them. With them being more narrow. Really makes cutting the fret ends easier from the 14th fret down.
Nice work on that P-Bass, you really brought it back to life! Where did you get that matte black pick guard? I've been looking for one but can't seem to find it.
I think it was the original one that came on that bass.
