Product Pricing… points, thoughts, considerations

Ok… hehe, actually a bit of a rant but worth the listen for some trying to determine how to price products. Starting with a flat per hour rate that you believe to be worth your time is a great start point. Time your projects effectively and don’t fool yourself about how long you actually spend working on a product.

Sometimes a Simple Mix Up Means Mistakes are Made
I have to tell you I absolutely love your channel. I’m a retired fireman and just started playing with leather a little while back to make some extra fun money. I too have a nice laser engraver and just picked up a near new Juki sewing machine that can handle leather so I can add some stitching. You definitely nailed it on the head about how long it takes to hand make a quality piece of leather work. So many people race to bottom of the price structure to make a sale and completely under value their work. I sure wish I lived close to you so I could just sit down and chat about all this fun stuff. Look forward to more of your videos!! Thanks again!!
@@fyerfighter11 Thank-you so much! Great to hear. For some people this video may go over as well as a fart in church but I think many people will connect with the expressed sentiments. More and more I’m done under valuing my time. Hehe…One of these days maybe I’ll learn how to do some of that live feed stuff and get to interact more with good people like yourself.
@@jasonhankins2537yeah a live feed would be awesome, in your spare time that is🤣.
Very nice work.
great video. Thank you. Where do you buy your Kabi glue gun brush ? I can't find one. Thanks!

Try that link. If it doesn’t work…go to Weaver Leather Supply. Do a search for glue brush. Hope that helps. Thank-you!
@@jasonhankins2537 Thank you.
where can i buy this machine? I come from 🇮🇩 indonesia
I need to get some and get my settings dialed in on my laser. Thank you for your time putting this out!!
@@fyerfighter11 My pleasure! These are the settings that worked for me so far. I still occasionally experiment trying for better results faster. My laser will go faster but Delrin is tricky. To fast and it won’t etch well. To slow or too much power and it melts. I’m sure I can find a way to do it faster but will have to really play more with increasing the power when the laser travels faster. It took me a few weeks to get the results I get… so mostly just stay at these settings.
@@jasonhankins2537yeah I had to do the same thing with acrylic when I started playing with it for stamps. I’ve watched your previous videos about Derlin and found a local manufacturer/supplier and just need to bite the bullet and get some. You’re right about the brittleness of acrylic on those fine details.
THANK YOU!
You're doing great work for a great cause. I'll hit up your product page :-)
Absolutely beautiful work!!
Love your channel and work. I’ve started my leather learning journey and have made a few stamps on my laser using acrylic, just curious why you decided to use delrin? Did you find it’s more durable than acrylic?
Thank-you! Great to hear. Ok, so when I decided to try stamp making, I looked at who in the business was doing really really well with selling great quality stamps and in volume. I found two sellers who essentially have made a business fully out of making leather stamps. And I found that they both use Delrin. So that is the direction I went. Supposedly it is much harder and sturdier for leather makers where the stamp is expected to receive thousands of repeat uses. That said, when Im making a stamp for a customer that I don't expect to use hundreds of times, I often use acrylic. I find that the overall appearance of the stamped leather is just as good.
Awesome thank you so much for the info. It is nice to have the ability to make custom stamps whenever you need them. I have found with the acrylic stamps the sharp edge at the top of the engraving tends to chip off on the first one or two impressions but after that they’re good. I’m going to order some Delrin and give it a try. Again I really appreciate your help and video content you produce!!
Great tip, I just bought one yesterday, should be here in a few days, so I'm looking around for tip and tricks since Ive always heard, tippman is a little cranky. Im not new to sewing, and I understand that every machine is different and and has its own temper, and we have to learn every machine as we go, also that net you have on your spool adds tension as well, and you will have to compensate for it, so in essence your machine as 3 upper tensioners.
Thank-you. It may have arrived by now. If so, I hope it is going well for you. Be sure and share any great tips or tricks you identify. Like you said, each of these is unique and must be learned as we go. Best wishes and thanks for the comment.
@@jasonhankins2537 Hey Jason, yes it arrived a few days after leaving the comment, and while it did sew right out of the box, it was still a little off, but after I gave it a little extra oiling, and adjusting the top tensioners and reducing the bobbin tension a bit, so it can sew for my needs, it did pretty well. Now what I did, was I used a secondary thread stand that sits just behind the boss at the bottom, for me putting the thread stand on top of the boss In my opinion is a design flaw, because every time you cycle the hand crank the thread rod guide wobbles everywhere and the thread unravels from the spool and get caught up under the spool if you don't net it, like in your video, but placing the spool of thread behind the boss at the bottom, its independent from the boss and does rattle, the thread has a smooth flow to the top, second, instead of threading the thread from the front to back like the manual says, first the first thread guide, I threaded it from back to front keeping with the smooth flow of the thread, because again every time I will crank the boss, the thread will curl around the top of the thread guide and interfering with the tension, also my machine is a newer one with a manufactured date of 2021 which puts in the 19,000 series and Tippman upgraded a few things, like the bumper stops and top and bottom, adding the wingnuts, instead of the regular knurled nuts, and they added the updated gear rack assembly, so you don't have to put the gear teeth on the 12th and 13th tooth position, like they have been saying for so long, but one of the most important thing that we new Boss owners need to do, is make sure all the screws are nice and tight, I thought my boss was a little mistimed, because when i would cycle the arm there was a delay, between the bobbin shuttle and the arm of about 1/2" then the bobbin shuttle would move and that will hinder my stitching, and I was wondering why it wasn't stitching right and why my first needle broke, so I went to do the gear rack trick and realized that it looked different from what I've see from old videos on youtube, so with further investigation thats where I learned that Tippman made upgrades to their newer manufactured machine, and with further diagnostics of the crank arm, I noticed that the screw that locks the arm to the gear cam was loose and all I had to do was tighten it up and it worked perfectly, so that's why I say the first thing is to make sure all the screws are tight, if it loosens up in the future, I will put some thread lock to insure it doesn't loosen up. but all in all, after all that I did, and all the tweaks, and oiling, I am very happy so far, and will be making a video of it soon. Sorry for such a long explanation.
@@JohnnyUrbanWoodsmen I love the explanation! Good to know that Tippmann is making updates and improvements. I love that it is working well for you! And… very smart and common sense solution with putting the spool away from the machine. I think you are definitely on point!
@@jasonhankins2537 Thank you.
I like the look of stitching done with twist point needles. I was looking on the tipman site but I dont see any twist point needles offered. Do you know if any twist point like the 135x16LR Walking Foot Leather Industrial Sewing Needles Size-120/19 10 Pk Groz-Beckert will work with the tippmann?
I think you may have just missed the needles on the Tippmann website… tippmannindustrial.com/794-size-250-ten-pack/
Please can you tell me what that strip of leather that you grabbed at minute 7:22 is for. Thanks for your reply. Greetings from CGBVP station 177, firefighters from Peru.
An anti-swap strap connect to your belt or belt loop to keep the radio strap in place and close to your body. th-cam.com/video/K9UxFC72tPw/w-d-xo.html
Mine has a problem that it stiches fine o n the long straight runs but when I turn a corner or round a belt point the thread will pull too far through the bottom no matter how much i loosen the bobbin tension. Any ideas would be appreciated
Great tip bud. Keep making vids!
Thanks for taking the time to do this video. I own 2 of them, one for backup and daily lighter thread stitching, the other for heavier 277 thread. I completely agree their tensioning can be a lot like black magic once it gets out of adjustment. My spool thread wrapped around the spool base like you cautioned. Naturally i started twisting tension nuts wondering what was holding the thread back. Like you said best thing to do is go back to factory specs and make minor adjustments from there. I just ordered some of the spool netting. Great suggestion. Also, dull needle can drive you crazy wondering why the shuttle bobbin wont grab the down thread. Thats another way to get you confused about there being a tension problem. Great video, many thanks.
Thank you so much for taking the time and energy to make this video! It is very very helpful.
Thank you! I sew canvas, and have been thinking about getting into leather. My grandson is a firefighter, and wants to make his own strap. So, I guess this is my launch into leatherworks. I really appreciate this. Very informative.
My pleasure! Thank-you!
Hey! Can you tell what that presser foot is called?
Yes! This is the CENTER foot! Its THE BEST! I haven’t gone back to any other since I started using this one. Available thru Tippmannindustrial.com
I actually very much prefer to use a size 346 POLYESTER with a dry corse feel. BUT it is hard to find in the colors that the type of projects I still use the Boss for require. So, I ended up switching to Bonded Nylon size 277. This is smoother and slides thru the tension plate of the bobbin much easier so some adjustments of top tension will be needed. Try not to adjust the bobbin tension much if you can avoid it. You may find no issues till you hit a certain project with a certain thickness or firmness of leather that suddenly dictates the tension adjustment.
For the Tippmann Boss, what thread (size, brand and/or type) have you personally found that works best and given you the least troubles?
Ah! See my other comment plus a short video coming to the channel specifically answering this question. Thanks!
yeah

Great video. Any reliable vendors you've found for ordering custom embossing wheels?
Ok, sorry it's taken me a while to respond. I do tend to miss comments here and there. Ok... actually... yes, sort of. Sergei Neskromny of LeatherStampTools found on Etsy (I first found him on Instagram) does make some custom embossing wheels. Now.. here is the thing... his wheels are made for a different machine and wouldn't fit, except that we noted the size needs were different and after meticulously assessing the dimensions needed for this machine, he did make me a few wheels and all but one fit perfectly. One needed some slight filling down in order to fit. But all work great now. I think we all wish Weaver Leather made more patterns. But LeatherStampTools is good to work with.
@@jasonhankins2537 You're the man! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!
Thank you! I’m considering purchasing one of these machines, appreciate the advice!
Have you tried any of Sergei Neskromny embossing wheels on it?
Ok, sorry for the delay. But good news... yes. Now... careful, his normal wheels (at least the ones he was selling about two years ago) would have been the wrong size but I worked with him - it was fairly easy - and he made some that were the sizes needed for this machine. Again... that was about two years ago and I haven't checked back since. Hopefully he has this size option as a standard now. If not, hopefully he would still work with you to get the right size. I used a quality micrometer and drawing software to make him a detailed schematic of the existing wheel sizes I had from Weaver. I'm sure there is an easy way these days to scan something like that.
Smashed!
idk why youtube brought me here but im here
Congratulations! Sorry about the 7D test.

Awesome process. I've been trying to 3d print stamps for my leather. It too has been a learning curve.
Hope the 3D print process is going well. My oldest son once 3D printed a stamp for me. The result was ... just ok, but we both could tell that with some trial and error it did seem like a viable option.

@jasonhankins2537 just curious, on the single piece strap, is the Stitching around the edge just for aesthetics?
Don't need to make any of my own I found quite a few of the Motorola ones on eBay that were the original OEM Radio straps with holster and they work just as good if not better
Hello Jason. I recently purchased a similar type of glue gun, as I saw the Kabi gun in a different video (mine is a different brand, but I assume the mechanism is the same). I was just about to use it, but I ran into an issue and that lead me to your video. While the video does not highlight my specific issue, I thought I'd ask you as you might know. So I had filled the canister with some glue, halfway I think, and it was sitting for a few days (fully closed of course). I just grabbed it to use it for the first time ever, and I tried to pump some glue out but the glue never came out. It was not pumping it up and there was no resistance to the trigger other than the attached spring. Inside, there is a ball bearing at the bottom of the mechanism and it stays there, not sure how exactly it is supposed to sit or if pumping the gun is supposed to lift it up. Any ideas as to what may have happened?
how do i buy 3 cases for motorola t460 two way radios and 2 cases for my R350 two way radios
Hi! Unfortunately right now I don’t currently make cases specific to those radios. In order to make cases for different radios I would need to layout new design measurements adjusted to radio sizing, button locations, etc. When retire from fire and police services in the not too distant future, I may look into offering an expanded selection of radio cases.
Do you use a punch for the habaki space or just do straight cuts with a knife?
With big batches like this I actually load the pattern into a laser cutter and let the laser do the cutting work - mostly. Its thick leather so it doesn’t quite cut all the way through so I have to do the final cuts with an Exacto knife. The laser does leave a burn dust on the vertical edges so that has to be sanded away.
Here I am cutting mine by hand like a sucker. 😀
