I have one that I am restoring (1976 Glenbrook), and owned a 1973 Painted Desert parts coach. I'm helping a friend restore a different 1973 Painted Desert. They're amazingly well built. If you have mechanical skills, and the patience/wallet it's a great coach to own and restore. All the things that made them a superior product five decades ago haven't changed. Check the frame by the rear bogeys. Check the frame by the downward kick after the UPP. Make sure the motor turns, and the THM425 doesn't smell burnt. Be prepared to curse about the fuel system (I do, daily), and enjoy the ride. I'm aiming to be out in 2026 with a new interior, suspension, brakes, FI, everything but paint. They're worth it.

Hydraulic tappets are designed to have preload so there is no free play from the cam - tappet - pushrod - rocker - valve to eliminate wear.. the way you have adjusted them there will be play until the engine warms up and the gap may close or may not.. so yes your engine will run no problem as the valves are closing fully but there will definitely be excess wear in the tappets and cams

Hello and thanks for watching! Okay so Heat Wrapped exhaust helps keep the radiant temperature from the exhaust away from other components and lowers the over all engine bay temperature. They were seen as portable offices, dressing rooms, party centers for picnics classy events, and stadium hang-out vehicles with a place for the kids to fall asleep. @@WeRoamtheUnknown I would take mine to car shows and there would always be a few that would want to argue all that like he was the first to have it. As to your comment, you can find the same tail light lenses as the Chevy vans of them (there is a better aftermarket one) and all the knobs are right off the police car Impales. To this day the NY City RTS busses have a lot of panels that could have come right off the GMC motorhomes. One has to understand a lot of this and operate them within their design parameters. Again start with the floor, meaning pull it up. Get the frame right the running great wiring and so forth. Do marine plywood with insulated hardwood floor over perhaps with heating strips between as there is just not enough room to add 3 inches of playroom and insulation. You can't change that design or nothing will ever line up. Do not do carpet or parquet as GMCs attract dirt and sand on the floor and the floor flexes so it will crack the parquet. Then do your interior. I forgot to tell you that the cockpit gets crazy hot in the summer if you don't put gate valves on your heater hoses and if I were doing one over I would run hard lines back as it gets cold for passengers. I do notice that the previous owner had the usual overheating and added the vents on each side of the engine compartment. By the way, the stuff I'm telling you is having had four transcodes and 2 motorhomes so I have already made a lot of mistakes broken things, and been stuck by the side of the road cause I just didn't know a few things in advance. By the way, the mud daubers love the heater output so you will need the screens or suffer the invasion of the wasps behind the sink! Also, you will fall in love with expanding foam since field mice seem to absolutely love the GMCs. One of the big things with GMCs is hunting down and then stowing away such things as glass and hardware but most all the running gear can be either ordered or replaced with lighter and better current technology. So this isn't wishful thinking stuff it's stuff I wish I had known!

Great videos. You're making me think I could rebuild my vanagon engine. It doesn't really need it but man that engine looks clean. Keep up the good work and get that baby fired up.

Hello and thank you for the kind words! I’d say go for it , rebuilt it and put some love into it . These old rigs made it 40 + years on a factory built so why not do a refresh and get another 40 plus more ! Seriously appreciate the message and hope you subscribe! I have alot more to share!

Well there will always be another one to start on. It was a nice rig but it was really small anyway. I think the next one should be a little bigger to allow more room for the kids. I love smaller RVs but they really aren't for family's. Mainly big enough for a couple and that's about it. When someone has kids then you need more sleeping room, so just keep your eye oit for a dirt cheap if not free large RV and go for it. I have seen a few for free, just need to remove them from the property. You can always get a large one like that and just cover it with a tarp till you can get around to it. Keep up the great work and content.

I completely agree, he was small and that became ever more clear while using him with a family of 5 . When I first got him I’ve never owned an RV and didn’t know what to expect while working on him . Learning something every single day . I’ve also never vlogg a day in my life . A lot of “ first “ happened and you know for a fact . You’ll never forget your first lol . I love this rig . Have him forever tattooed on my leg . Just wish I made the trip to Alaska in him . Had a full circle moment . I am looking for something special. Something unique. Something like Chappie . I’ll know it when I see it i suppose. Thank you so much for subscribing to this little channel and supporting us by watching the episodes ! It truly does matter ❤️

I feel for you mate. I enjoyed following your build and you have done a lovey job, I'm sure the new owner will appreciate all your efforts thus far. Take it from an old bloke, life isn't easy or fair at times but you will land on your feet. Sounds like you are putting your family ahead of your own personal desires which is admirable. Hang in there, material things come and go and I'm confident that when the time is right another great opportunity will find you. Better days are ahead so carry on. Cheers !

Oh gosh 🥹 your words seriously struck a chord. Thank you for being such a huge supporter of this little TH-cam channel! I do believe you’ve been here since day one . Having connected with a complete stranger from across the pond is truly a special feeling for me . Yes , I’m putting the needs of my family first but also feel like I’m saying goodbye to a family member lol I know it sounds lame but it’s the truth. I’ve grown a lot during this process and so very thankful for all the memories. Alaska is still on my mind and hopefully I’ll get the opportunity to build another rig that can get us there. Cheers my friend! Thank you so very much for joining me on this journey!

Thank you for being a constant support on my channel! Truly means a lot to me ! Being so new go Vanagons I’m seriously leaning as I go on this build . Vlogging adds another layer of complexity and effort. Not to mention time 😂 . Again thank you for being so supportive!
