Its a "rugged" Luxury vehicle now, with nice leather, electronics, gimmicks and 500hp+ engines.
Can such a suspension that is on the black G wagon be put in a G Wagon that doesn't have a front solid axel? And what are your thoughts about a diesel G Wagon. They are more economical. Thanks. Love the channel. Keep on uploading. Love to see how the a triple locked wagon takes on the off-roads.
Love a 90s LR
Wow! $175,000 to climb that Little Rock! My Toyota rav 4 could done it in half the time 😂
Where did you get $175,000 from? And there's not a single chance that your Rav 4 could even get a tire up there.
@ umm I googled “price of g wagons” lol tha fuck? And it absolutely could. My 2005 jeep grand Cherokee could also climb that baby rock. G wagon drivers ignorant as hell
@ umm I googled “price of G wagons” lol tha fuck you mean? Also my rav 4 easily getting up that baby rock. My 2005 grand Cherokee could also do it. G wagon drivers are ignorant as hell
@@gwheeln people love to troll on the internet. Plus everything looks smaller on camera. Two foot tall rocks look like pebbles. 30° climbs look like something an accord could do.
@@gwheeln dude keeps deleting my comments. My 2005 grand Cherokee could climb that rock. G wagon drivers are ignorant 🤡
Regarding the value for money ratio, I think the G Wagen CAN be a bargain. Go for the older G500, and not the AMG (TFL bought the wrong G). They have triple lockers, reliable understressed engines, and the ruggedness of the military vehicles. And, there are tons of them around. I was also shopping for 100 Series Land Cruisers with a rear locker and found them as expensive as a G500. LR Defenders are REALLY expensive. My wife found a 2002 G500 in Utah with 62k miles, one owner, dealer serviced and paid $33k. She didn't want to go offroad with it much, even though (at my urging) it had a Front Runner rack and Autohome RTT. We did do a few several day trips in it. When I was able, I shopped for one nation wide for 6 months and found a one owner 91k mi. 2003 G500 in Texas for $35k. It now has the roof rack from my wife's, JWO 2" lift & front bumper, with winch, ORC T case skid plate, Wildpeak A/Ts on stock 18" rims. I removed the rear seats and made a sleeping platform so I can sleeep inside. It's an overlanding truck. And, as you say, not very good on the road, but MAGIC in the dirt. So far, in 15 months of ownership, I've done about 3-400 miles on the dirt. All in all, far less money than a top spec new Bronco, Wrangler, 4Runner, etc. I love it.
I'm so glad you made this comment. You are dead right. And the G500 engines just seem to go and go and go! Man, I've been thinking about pulling the rear seats and building a sleeping platform back there. I'd love to see pics of your rig. Sounds like it's set up perfectly with the 2" JWO lift, bumpers, and skids. You've got a sick rig and I'm glad to have you here!
@@gwheeln Where can I send some pics to you?
I'll stick with my 5th gen...also saving a 100 grand lol
You can get G500 single owner rigs with less than 70k miles in the $30k range if you shop smart.

Hey there. Curious how long you have had the AFN front bumper and where you found one. I was looking for one over the summer (2024) and couldn't find them in stock anywhere.
They are hard to find. I got lucky in September. Joe at Alliance Auto Care in Loveland, CO (G Wagon Specialist) had one in stock. He may have another one. Also, did you check Jack Wagon Overlanding? Jack has them on his website but not sure about stock. Jack Wagon Overlanding also has a front bumper that is worth looking at.
@@gwheeln Thanks for the referral! Jack was who I talked to this summer. He indicated the bullbar version was supposed to be restocked in a few months, so I just need to follow up. If no luck, I'll reach out to Joe. Cheers!
@@jasonkarriker3134 both are great dudes. I hope one of them is able to help you out.
You made a comment about something about 'how there is something about gwagons just making them good off road and not get stuck easily.' Totally agree there is something about their relative heavy weight, to relative size of vehicle, size/width of tires, all time 4x4, and engine power. Where they can just chug through things in a very satisfying way. I went into a backfield at night thinking it was dry, and immediately sank in mud, to the point the exhaust pipes were well under the water/mud line, and it took some back and forth's at times, but I was able to drive a semi circle and get out, using the front skid plate to break plain and churning the 22's rims and tires. Hugely impressive ability on its part to get us out of a jam, can see why you would suggest removing the steps and changing the pipes up.
It's crazy, isn't it? These things are just traction monsters.!!💪
For the kind of wheeling I do, I've found I use the front locker independent of the rear locker probably 5 to 1. Rear lockers cause so much pushing that it often creates issues by causing the front to skate forward in low traction situations rather than allowing it to turn.
That's a really great technique. I really wish that factory rigs like the G wagon have the ability to independently lock the front locker. Jeep rubicons have the same issue. You can only run front and rear together.
@@gwheeln I'm sure with some minor rewiring you can get the front locker to come on independent of the rear locker. Probably something that could be sold commercially.
@@georgecarousos6735 That's a really good idea. I'm going to chat with a couple folks about this :)
@@gwheeln If you search "Tazer JL Mini" you can see a device that lets Jeep owners modify a lot of the pre-set parameters. May be worth contacting them for a proprietary unit that only you can sell since the market is so small compared to the Jeep segment. If you proceed, make sure that it will work on both USA and international spec'd G-wagons which really opens up a larger sales segment for you.
Curious what kind of highway mpg you get with this set up?
Terrible. 11.5 at 80mph. I can get 12-13 on the mountain roads. Overall since I got it I'm averaging 10.5 but that includes wheeling (and snow wheeling).
Another great vid. Packed full of detail here.
Appreciate you 🙏 more to come!
You have renewed my interest in purchasing a Gwagon. lol
I'm happy to hear that 😎👊😁 enjoy shopping and ask any questions here while you research.
Nice build!!
Thank you, Justin! 👊
I subbed after watching the TFL bit. I love watching people build up less common rigs. Land Rover Discos, G Wagons, and others. Myself, I have a classic 84 Grand Wagoneer that was an unexpected, but wonderful purchase. I now have a Gen 3 LS in it. It's a very mild build with a 2 1/2" lift, hidden Warn 9K winch and a 242 transfer case for both full time and part time 4x4 capability. Similar to your G Wagon, the old Full Sized Jeeps had a flat belly pan. While, the frame does hang under the body, no mechanicals are below that. I built it for camping and exploring USFS areas. Would love to add TrueTracs in the axles as I'm not into risking hard to find sheet metal. Look forward to more content.
Thanks for being here. Your grand wagoneer sounds like one hell of a rig. I LOVE those classic Jeeps. Enjoy it in good health. And let the unique rigs live on and wheel hard!
I highly doubt modifying G wagons is ever going to take off in the USA. . . Super expensive and Americans like Jeeps for some reason. . . In my view, proper diesel Toyotas are the best choice, LC 76/78 4.5 liter V8 diesels.
A used g wagon is cheaper than a new half ton, which is what Americans actually like. They money Americans put into the their rigs makes this a non factor. Jeeps are for daisy dukes and death wobbles.
Although I agree that G Wagons probably won't take off, I do believe they will become a more popular choice as they age and prices drop. And as much as I absolutely love the LC 76 and it's Diesel options, finding them in the US is both rare and expensive.
Also agree that the Gs are less than a new half ton (like half as much). And no matter what the rig, people put money into them. Look at the current portal craze. People are spending $60k on portal builds (in addition to the price of whatever vehicle they start with). Of course that includes armors, Wheels+ tires, etc.
@@gwheeln It will never take off in the same way for sure, based on rarity/availability alone I think, and mods are ridiculously expensive. That said I got one, and am crashing it around the woods because of the relative price to new trucks and used land cruiser options etc. So their may be uptick in the amount of people specifically buying 10-15 year old ones to offroad them.
People like jeeps because there’s millions and millions of them. Also _tons_ of aftermarket support. Although it does create a Catch 22 situation - people won’t buy vehicles with little aftermarket support, but aftermarket support won’t be there until more people buy the vehicles. Cost also plays a part. He mentioned he spent $60k on his vehicle with 40k miles - great deal on a G wagon, but I have 2020+ Wrangler Unlimiteds right now with that mileage pulled up on Autotrader (clean title, 1 owner) for less than )for $25k. For the average person who might slap some rock rails and some 33s on it and call it a day, that’s a pretty good price. Hell, a full lift, wheels, 35” tires, regear, steel bumpers, winch, locker in the rear, would still only run you $20k (or less) and you’re all less than $45k all in. He’s absolutely correct about people buying $60k rubicons and then dropping another $50k on them, but lots of people also have budgets we have to stick to, and having a vehicle with a much lower entry price point helps with that.
I'm pretty sure I could buy another G550 for the cost of those portals. 😂
😆😜 and you probably could.
I'd say switch back to a 2" lift on the 2015 (I understand it had it and 33s when it appeared on theTFL video); and add 37s or 38s to it, coupled with very liberal fender cutting + custom flares (to keep it looking somewhat stock-ish and professional, in line with your approach to modding these vehicles) 😎😬 Do you think the stock axles/drivetrain would be up to it? Are they comparable to a Dana 44, strength-wise? I'd guess they are even stronger.🦾🦾 Anyway, I'd love to see it! Pretty sure I'm not the only fan of big-tire LCG (Low Center of Gravity) builds around here 😅😅
Yo! Welcome to the channel and thanks for the comment. Although in theory that'd be great, it's it possible at the moment. The only lifts available are 2 and 4 inch. And the absolute only way to fit 35s thats been done so far is with a 4". It is possible to squeeze a 34 in a 2 inch. But could be worth playing with the idea. I'm going to research and see. And I do believe the axles could hold up to 37s 💪
I got 2” lifted 33 ok2 with rhino crossbars…1/4” clear going through my 7ft garage door :) did off-road from UT, AZ, CA, WO, Montana. Owned my G for 8 yrs. Love to find your channel

I'd love a Unimog!

Here Kitty Kitty!
A lot of people think the first Gs to the US were in 2002 but Europa International in Santa Fe was bringing them in almost 10 years earlier. All new Gs had to go through Europa until they sold the rights to Mercedes-Benz USA. They sold many to celebrities and pro athletes at a starting price of $135,000 for the straight 6 3.0 liter gas engine. And that's 30+ years ago! I remember going into another Mercedes dealership in the mid '90s and the silly guys there insisted that the G wasn't a real Mercedes but I'm sure their tune changed when they were finally able to sell them years later!
Well said. Thanks for the comment. I went wheeling with a Europa G a couple weeks ago 🤘
All the stuff you mentioned are not big deal. More importantly you wouldn't pay 150k for it anyway because so much of these minor flaws
Dude i love your videos!!!
That means a lot to me. Thanks a ton for the comment and for being here. I'm just getting started 🙂 stay on the lookout for much more to come!
There’s something very satisfying about seeing a G Wagon flexed out
💪😎🤘
what the 2nd or 3rd owner does with his G wagon
Yep! Let the first guy take the depreciation hit 🙂 I was fortunate enough to find this one owner vehicle. All dealer serviced.
Haha get that guy out of there and get your wife in there to take charge!
😎❤️🤘
Glad that lady was there....Lol
Me too 😜
Offroading is not about breaking your vehicle, its the experience of doing what you are doing, having a spotter like her is priceless.
Well said!
Bad ass! It’s on my bucket list for sure.
Having a spotter like this takes the difficulty out of the equation. You have to do this totally alone and then we’ll talk.
An obstacle rated experts only, a $70k rig, Spotter the first time through? Pathetic
Do it in your Duster and then WE"LL talk 😂😂😂
@ Ah! Yeah! No, not in the Duster! 😳😬😎
@@DaciaProject We will spot you! 😄
Has anyone lifted a G65 V12?
I haven't seen one myself.
G wagons start at $150k so i would say that makes them luxury.
Hi again, do you know about Werewolf portal axles from Ukraine? They would seem to be a logical progression for you. More torque and on 38s. . .
Thanks for suggesting these! Doing some homework on them for the future. The black build in this video with the portals is not mine. I'm driving the white one with the 4-in lift and solid axles. But very curious about a portal build in the future 🙂
@ There are other US G Wagons on Werewolf portals…
Hi, I am American but live in Romania. There is a W461 G Wagon 3.0 liter diesel, basically the military spec version, that was last sold to consumers in 2013. Looks legit! Am trying to choose between it and a 4.5 liter diesel LC 200 series from 2016!
Heck yeah! Thanks for the comment. You already know my vote 😜
@@gwheeln I'd love to see someone mod a G65 V12. I think they were only made through 2017. . .
@5:08 that's weird about the sound system. I had a 2006 E-Class and it was great. Id figure they'd put the same one into the G-Class
One would think. But they are truly epicly terrible lol.
Great info thx. I just bought a nice 04 G55 and ready for some mods. Question I have that wax smell (not bad) and I've learned its possibly coming the the fiber board between the roof and headliner any thoughts on replacing that material.
Congrats on your new G55 👊💪😎 Older Mercedes (bmw too) have a very inquire crayon like smell from their leathers. There could be a chance that it's totally normal and there's really nothing you can do about it.
I’m glad you talk about its shortcomings I could say much of the same for my older wrangler but never would’ve compared it to a G wagon I’ve realized I might not be missing much😆
😜👊💪
Is this a stock G63?
Yup. Only tires are not stock.
Highly recommend QuadLock for the phone situation. They make an adhesive mount that would fit perfectly on your wood grain dash
Thanks for the recommendation. I'll take a look!
