Just a Dude travelling around having fun. Life is short, make it a good lap.
I've now officially started my journey South. Not sure where I'm going but the plan is to take life one day at a time. Packed up my 2017 Kawasaki KLR650 and left Canada on July 9th, 2022. Currently in South America and maybe beyond?

Bye bye Chile, Hello Argentina, Llamas, denied at border & another Flat Tire. Route 41 S2, E21
What started as my second ever crash turned into quite the adventure. (AGAIN).
I’d actually done a little bit of research this time on ioverlander about the Paso Roballo border crossing between Chile and Argentina. The reviews were that it was “quick & easy”. Well, it was quick… they did tell me NO right away. Apparently you need to submit your Police documents 2 days ahead of time online as they can’t process it at this border crossing.
I wasn’t the only one turned away. 2 other bikers came to the border right after they denied me. It did make me feel a little better that I wasn’t the only one without the appropriate paper work.
They suggested I go to the Chile Chico border crossing where they do everything online for you.
So, 75 kms back to the main highway and then another 163 kms and I was in Chile Chico.
Found a cheap little hotel for $25 and stayed the night.
Arrived at the border early the next morning and crossed into Argentina with zero issues and fairly quickly.
When I tried to leave the border town of Los Antiguos, Argentina with another biker, we were turned away as the Route 40 (main highway) was closed to all traffic due to high winds. (Not that uncommon from what I could gather).
There was a chance that it would reopen at 4pm but no guarantees. As it was only 10am, we opted for a coffee and some wifi. Turns out that there was a massive festival in the town so hotel rooms were going to be an issue.
On the map there was another road called Route 41. It looked to be gravel and in the mountains. I didn’t feel like just hanging around for hours for a road that may or may not open so I decided to take 41 without knowing much about it. Basically following how I’ve picked every route on the trip.
Route 41 did not disappoint, It was AMAZING. Stunning, incredible. I barely out ran a storm and it was super windy. The scenery was so worth it though.
I ended up in Gobernador Gregores about the same time they would’ve opened the other road so I feel that I made the correct decision.
After a night in Gobernador Gregores in a $20 hotel room I got onto Route 40 and headed towards El Calafate. I’m not sure about all of Route 40 but the section I rode was not that enjoyable. The pavement abruptly ended numerous times. Slippery gravel, high winds & nasty potholes. But there are only so many options here for roads.
I think that any road after Route 41 would’ve looked bad though to be fair.
The other part of Route 40 was the amount of dead Llamas or Alpacas (I really don’t know the difference, I could google it but I’m busy drinking beer). They usually get stuck tangled up in the fences and eventually die. Pretty sad as I saw a whack of them during my ride.
OK, I just googled it and they are Llamas.

The best part of travelling is meeting fellow travellers. And this part of Chile only has a couple of options for roads so you’re pretty much guaranteed to run into the same people again. I’ve hung out Andrew (from Smithers, BC), Brian (San Diego, USA), Nina & Romy (different places in Germany) a couple different times now. From New Years Eve to hiking the hanging glacier ...it’s all been fun. ...

After getting my credit card info stolen and my cards cancelled, I ended up in Cozumel, Mexico for xmas. The plan was to regroup mentally and wait for my new credit cards that were to be delivered on Dec 27th, SPOILER ALERT: The cards never arrived not did they even leave Canada. It was only about a 26 hr return trip back to Puerto Montt, Chile. 1 ferry, 3 flights and 2 buses later I was back a...

Bolivia had it all for me. 3 flat tires & my first ever crash. The Salt Flats & Death Road (Yungas Road) had been on my list of places to see since I left BC, Canada on my Kawasaki KLR650 back in July of 2022. Bolivia is the fifth-largest country in South America after Brazil, Argentina, Peru and Colombia. Alongside Paraguay, is one of two landlocked countries in the Americas. #trippingwithal #...

Starting out in Lebu, Chile I make my way South thru Contulmo towards Los Sauces. Can we take a quick second and just agree on how great of a name that is for a town. Los Sauces! I ended up in Valdivia for 2 nights at Kapai Alojamientos. I paid $18 for a dorm bed but was lucky enough to have the entire room to myself for the 1rst night. 2nd night, I had room mates. Bolivia-Chile border x-ing, country #14 of this epic journey on my 2017, Kawasaki KLR650. S2, E17
มุมมอง 290หลายเดือนก่อน
It was a shaky start crossing the border from Bolivia into Chile. I’d had a flat tire for 25kms and limped into Chile. Not a great start to a new Country. BUT, all I needed was an ice cold beer and a crane truck and I’d be A-OK. No ice cold beers but I did manage to find a crane truck headed to a big city to get my bike fixed. Side note: This part of Bolivia & Chile do not drink their beer cold...

I left BC, Canada on July 9th, 2022 to start another amazing adventure. This time on a 2017 Kawasaki, KLR650. I'd started a ride 8 years before on a 2009 KLR650 to see how far I could go until I ran out of money. The answer turned out to be Dominical, Costa Rica where I managed to sell my motorcycle in no-mans land (between Costa Rica & Nicaragua for $4k... that's a whole different story though...

Up here at SnowWater we put our own touches on a lot of things. We have a TV in the bar for special occasions but it's on a "Fireplace" channel 99.9% of the time. Well, I got tired of just a fireplace so I made a different one. I encourage you to yell "Fire poker" whenever you see my arm (usually means that someone has to take a drink but you be you). It's a harmless video but it does have a co...

The Salt Flats in Bolivia have been on my list of things to see since I left Vancouver, BC, Canada way back in early July, 2022. It did not disappoint. It’s HUGE! I’d also been looking forward to being naked on the bike for the Salt Flats…well, technically, I wasn’t naked as I was wearing one sock over my massive manly parts! I loved the Salt Flats so much that I went back a second time to watc...

The Death Road aka El Camino del Muerte, in Bolivia is one of the things you have to do when you visit la Paz, It is incredible. It’d be amazing on a mountain bike cause it is sure is awesome on a motorbike. Everything was going great until I came across a section of the Death Road that had been washed out by a landslide. It wasn’t worth risking the bike by trying to get across. I would’ve need...

Vinicunca aka Rainbow Mountain is a great spot to check out. The motorcycle ride to get there was worth it alone. It was a little crowded up top for my liking but as far as a touristy thing to do, I enjoyed it. I love when I’m not in a hurry and I can explore as I’m riding. I came across an abandoned/ destroyed church that was worth the atop in Marangani, Peru. Another great thing about Peru is...

Although Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain) in Peru is very touristy, it is incredibly beautiful. It's a very cheap option on a motorcycle as well. It cost 5 sol to enter the 1rst area then another 20 sol at the the second gate (less than $7 usd in total). I'm usually not a fan of outings like this but the motorcycle ride there from Pitumarca was so worth it. Most of the tourist buses depart from Cus...

Peru, I'm in LOVE with you! You are AMAZING. Your beauty never ceases to amaze me. Even after a ridiculous night, you still wake up looking so incredible. I had to try eating the famous Cuy (Guinea Pig). Not my favourite to be honest. Personally I think it's way over-rated and too expensive for what you get. I even felt bad as in Pitumarca, they had fashion show with Cuy all dressed up. #trippi...

No llamas or alpacas here… Guanacos! Hahaha Welcome to the best country in the world Al!! I’ll tell Messi you said hi 🫶🏼
Gracias Pilar! I did overhear someone mention a Guanacos and wondered what it was. I'm hoping to run into Messi myself but he hasn't been returning my calls.
Original and real - ur doing well - even if ur not young and pretty like the youtube stars :-)
WHAT! I'm not young & pretty... how dare you be accurate!
@TrippingwithAl haha! And great sense of humour Al! Keep on tripping!
Nice work!
fighting all this wind does feel like work. It's crazy how much you get "punched in the chest" when a semi-truck goes by you in the other direction. You better be holding on!
Seen a couple people ride the 40 on YT. Seems like its pretty windy often. Still better than being stuck in the valley for the winter with your bike! I keep liking and sharing your channel to help, it's one of the best!
I'm happy that it was closed cause 41 on a dry day was incredible. So scenic.
Some days you give it to the road, some days the road gives it to you. Man, I could have given you the info for doing the form to cross there.
The tough part is knowing where you're going ahead of time and planning. I never know 2 day ahead, I struggle with 1 day ahead.
PS: I did do a little "research" ahead of time but it turns out I only looked at the Argentina side of the reviews. All the other reviews (ioverlander) for the Chilean side do mention what I needed to do. No more than 100% my fault, Live & don't learn is my motto.
@@TrippingwithAl it's a weird one, because it is the only border you have to do that at, only because it is so remote. You don't have to know the exact day. I believe once you do it online, it is valid for 7 days. So you just need to do it at some point before getting there on your way down.
But your rockin that found sweater
I'm going to be cremated one day in this sweater!
after thinking about it more, I will be cremated but the sweater shall on forever.
👏👏👍👍
Wow, just love the scenery and the colours, especially the water!! glad you and the K lady are ok!
I've seen so much beauty and I'm not just talking about whenever I look in a mirror!
Absolutely gorgeous adventure guys! Shots and overall atmosphere are amazing!
It's sure been fun making & sharing the vids, I appreciate the feedback.
hopefully you have recovered frim your flu and major travels to Mexico! You are amazing Al! love your videos and updates love youXXOO
Thanks for being such a great human and for watching all the vids Catherine. Miss you & Larry.
Yup BC
pretty accurate eh! It's totally BC. I bet Chilean folks go to BC and say, that's totally Chilean.
Dang man. Did you skip going to the marble caves in Rio Tranquilo???
The downside of not planning anything is I also don't know anything. I'll have to hit there on the way back up!
"Like BC". Yup, but when you think about it. It is in the same location along the Pacific, and at about the same latitude as BC, just south instead of north.
The similarities are incredible. I guess math does make sense. Hope you're healing well Brother!
Great episode Al, I swear I thought you were in BC there for a second, loved the colours of the lake and rivers, well done, oh and glad to see you and the bike are okay:)
It's so beautiful down here Rossi, for sure put this on your list. Maybe for your honeymoon!
Bummer about the rain. The views just out of Chaiten are awesome if it's not cloudy. Hope you enjoy the rest of the Austral.
Not a bad rain record for me in Chile. 1 day out of many many so far. Sure enjoying this part of the world. I'm back to moving very slowly!
Lol. Foo-ta-la-foo. ;-)
I struggle with English as well as every other Language!
Good to hear you had some time with friends over the holidays! I had some friends tell me last year that Chile would be such an awesome place to see. You showed exactly where they where talking about. Beautiful. BTW your Spanish is perfect to me mon ami!
the more beer I drink the betterer my Spanglish is!
I know u had some shitty times with the tires but what an incredible episode! I love the way u shot the Salt Flats and the Train Graveyard! My favorite episode so far!!
Getting some new tires and some other things to the bike as we speak here in Chile. She's going to look so good after her Spa day!
Felix ano amigo
back at ya Al, I'm guessing that you spent it back in Bucerias?
The Salt Flat drone shot was incredible! What a wicked adventure!!
I've been thinking about the Salt Flats since I started this amazing journey. The did not disappoint!
Shitty u had the Flu, not fun at all! But, love the shot u got of the rainbow hitting the mountain, very cool! Also, the sound from those Jurrasic birds is freaky.
not sure what I had as I usually keep a little booze in my tank to prevent such illness! Almost back to 100%!
What a shit show! Glad you made it to Mexico with your friends and that your sister rocks!
never a dull moment on my travels, I wouldn't mind a day or 2 of dullness though.
Love the wall art, big beers and the bridges. Sorry u shit your bed, happens to the best of us!
I think the real sorry person was the cleaning person who had to wash the sheets.
Rainbow mountain is incredible! Edible gophers... not so much.
I don't think I'll ever eat another one.
Hello El Presidente! Amazing trip you’re on. I love watching your videos. Miss you brother happy new year. R Dog
Love you Rude-Dog! Wish you were here having some fun with me! Happy New Years!
Beauty. Loved the highlights. The train grave yard was fantastic. Merry Christmas ya beauty.
everybody loves a "greatest hits" album eh. The trains are awesome, there are so many.
Great video, mi amigo!
Looking forward to some beers with you two one of these days!

of course I remember you. I hope that you & your family are having a great trip. go Atlanta!

Man. That sucks. I got stuck for ages like that on my way from Quito to Miami.
still trying to figure shit out. Being stuck in Mexico isn't the end of the world though.
@TrippingwithAl - No doubt.
Geeeez Al, if you didn’t have bad luck you’d have no luck at all. What a nightmare. I loved Hornipiren, after Mexico, when you make it back to Chile from Hornipiren south you’ll feel like you’re in heaven. Don’t forget to book in advance for the ferry from Caleta Yungay to Puerto Natales, it gets sold out way in advance, Safe travels.
the difference between good & bad luck is pretty slim sometimes. Looking to get back to Chile real soon though... as soon as I have a way to pay bills! I promise to book the ferry in advance @deweyrides also mentioned that to me. Thanks for the heads up.
At least you had time to edit the videos, hahaha.
true enough my brother. Happy Holidays
what a ride this was.....
it was yet another adventure for sure!
Sorry to hear of all your troubles Al !! Glad you made it to Cozumel and good luck with all the credit card stuff and lastly,Merry Christmas!! Cheers 🍺🍺🎅🏻
It's all part of traveling alone on a motorcycle. I'm getting pretty good about not getting frustrated. Merry Christmas to you Fred!
Really enjoyed your video ! Retired in CUENCA a year ago . Driving privileges expired 6 months ago Been struggling for a Ecuador license since then . Hope to be on my way to Peru soon . Thanks for showing the way . Frustrating , Yes. But ridding around Cuenca . Avoiding check points . Has been fine .
I loved Cuenca. Really enjoyed some of those mountain towns around there as well.
It's called The Death Road for a reason. The road condition on the day was pretty bad. Turning back was a good call, AL!
every now & then I manage to do the smart decision. Not too often though!

Hi beautiful video. I’m going to Peru 🇵🇪 in January band I would love to get up there. Only worry is the weather which is going to be super wet I have been told. In which month did you go? Thank you
I was there in mid November. Not sure what the weather will be like in Jan but it sure is beautiful!

Love all the #88'S. Keep on keepin on!!!
and spoiler alert. Today the odometer hit 50k (+/- 3k when I didn't have an odometer for a month).
Great stuff Al! For the people that want to binge from the start, there is a tab "Sort" on your TH-cam playlist page that you can select "Oldest to newest" Thanks for taking us along!
great suggestion, I like to binge myself!
$3 on a new shirt! Budget. Blown.
actually it was 2 for $6. I can't spend anymore on clothing this month!
It is def the most expensive. The only other one that comes close is Uruguay. So cool seeing so many places I went by last year at the same time. I really liked TalTal. Caldera though was maybe my favorite of the cities in that region. You'll enjoy the south of Chile. It's different to the north. The north feels so much like being in the US or Canada.
I started the Carretera Austral today but had to turn back and return to Puerto Montt (future episode story). I did feel like I was back in Canada. Love your vids John, it gives me a sneak preview of awesomeness to come.
Although my travels are incredibly fun & rewarding, it is not easy financially (even though I'm living as cheaply as possible). If you are enjoying my videos and would like to help out... here's the link. Cheers. buymeacoffee.com/trippingwithal
