      I sadly can not answer that question very well. I have not been able to do too much printmaking as of late. A family situation has made it very difficult to find time to be able to create art. I would say I have been able to print a small edition every 3 to 4 months in the last 2 years. It has held up good and just as good as the day I bought it.

    A question on Aqua inks: I used them for linoleum printing. The ink took a long time to dry. And never seemed to dry when it was layered, one color on top of another. Also, after a few weeks, the paper developed an oily halo on the paper at the edges of the inked image. I researched Akua and they are aware of these issues, but it seems they haven't done anything. I was thinking of getting some powdered chalk (magnesium something) and adding a bit to the ink. We would do this to litho or intaglio inks to alter the oiliness.

    • @mattpernack6816
      @mattpernack6816 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      its the nature of the ink. Soy based inks unlike water-based, oil-based and even water-soluble oil don't dry to a hard film. They dry by the paper absorbing the soy based oil. If you use too much it does have a tendency to form those halos. You can either try to use less ink (the akua is pretty heavily pigmented.) or try to drain the extra oil from the jar. But my best recommendation would be to not use Akua for relief printing. Its pretty much meant to be used with any intaglio process like drypoint, etchings or engravings.

    • @mattpernack6816
      @mattpernack6816 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Having worked there for 7 years, I hear that a lot. I was told that the catalogs cost close to 10mil a year to print and ship (this included the 3 smaller sale catalogs they did in addition to the major one.) Oddly enough sales wise both the catalog and the internet brought in roughly the same amount. The owner decided that instead of trying to sell other people's product he would use that money and amp up his own production. Sadly that meant a lot of products (which included print making inks and that powered watercolor) were not in demand from other retailers. So it didn't make sense to make a product that didn't sell.

    Thank you!! Very informative. But...... I was waiting for you to speak a bit about how paper density (how compact the sheet is) affects the grammage and weight. Such as some ultra-thin Japanese notebook paper that I'm pretty sure is more dense in order to reduce thickness, while its heavy weight (which would normally imply much thicker) seems deceptive. I'm wondering if there are some standards that will help us compare, bc from what I can tell so far, when dealing with Japanese paper, you can basically throw out everything you know about grammage and weight, since the density varies so much. I'm going to watch your whole Paper School series and hopefully you will talk a bit about stone paper or onion-skin and various rice papers, etc, and some other more exotic types. Then there's Chinese paper, which I know nothing about except ripe/half-ripe/raw sizing types. And the history and standards for what we call newsprint, bond, kraft paper, etc?? There's lots to learn! Thank you for making this series, I'm excited to have found it.

    • @mattpernack6816
      @mattpernack6816 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really didn't touch paper density. Honestly I didn't think too much about it and it never occurred to me to discuss it. however paper density would have multiple factors just like weight/grammage from the manufacturing process, the original sheet size and the material being used. However on the topic of Traditional Japanese handmade paper or Washi, it is harder to be specific on weight/grammage. This is because it is a handmade paper. Each sheet can vary in weight/grammage or density because each one is individually made. Now this is not the case with certain Japanese papers such as Masa which are machine made but using similar materials as washi. The world of paper can be extremely confusing.

    Matt can you tell us how a rare book is preserved and the pigments and inks used in old books? Thank you. Just found your videos. Love them!

    • @mattpernack6816
      @mattpernack6816 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not know a whole bunch about rare books preservation, but I know know that typically they are stored in a climate control room and expose to as little light as possible (of course we also have think how old is old). Cotton gloves are typically worn when handling them. I do know there are some kind of buffering agents can used on the paper to shift its acidity to be more PH neutral. of course it also depends on the paper used. Newsprint is not acid free thus it will eventually become brittle. If its super important it may be mounted to some kind of acid free board and even stored under glass. When it comes to pigments most of them are very light fast. even the ones that are not tend not to fade too much most because they are not exposed to UV light, cause well they are in a book. There are some old inks that used iron in them and they will shift with age mostly because in essence they "rust". But most inks today (like india ink) and even back then used carbon which is light fast and didn't fade. If an ink fades quickly most often they are a dye based ink which means they will fade because a vast majority of dyes are not light fast. sadly however with old inks its hard to tell because often times they used a vast majority of different materials and longevity was not often understood. a lot of the old pigments also used are often toxic too.

    Just bought one of these and thanks for explaining everything and identifying issues that made the press (seriously) not so great, and especially offering some advice on what to do to try to improve the thing. Wish I had seen this during my research and review process. I did read a review that said to use a feeder and a catcher felt would significantly improve the quality of the resulting prints. I haven't figured out what the difference is between the two or how I should apply the felts yet...I have them and will experiment. I wondered about the bed flopping down at the end of the rotation process and am considering adding some additional extension supports to hopefully fix this. I did add some sticky stair tread strips to the bottom of the bed but it still slipped/binded up so will try the wood and layer with the rubber shelf stuff. The calibration is a pain to dial in - and more experience will be needed. Arrgh, it was easier to pull a good print by hand! Thanks again for your video.

    I thought washi refer to the long mulberry fiber, making thin strong paper. That is how we get washi tape, to repair pages, and as a decorative product.

    • @mattpernack6816
      @mattpernack6816 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Washi has to be handmade using traditional techniques. Mulberry fiber is just the most popular fiber used to make it. For some reason a lot of Japanese mulberry papers that are machine made are marketed as washi simple because they don't know better, understand the culture or I am sure there is a some translation lost. Plus is sounds better. Machine made mulberry or Kozo paper is still really good and will last just as long, its just more inexpensive because not everything is done by hand. Being machine made does cause the fibers to align more creating a more pronounced grain direction, which washi does not have a grain direction. That would be the major difference than would stand out the most between hand made Washi and machine made mulberry paper. Washi making is considered part of their cultural heritage. In 2014 UNESCO actually washi to their list of intangible cultural history of humanity. ich.unesco.org/en/RL/washi-craftsmanship-of-traditional-japanese-hand-made-paper-01001.

    Do you know anything about Bible paper?

    • @mattpernack6816
      @mattpernack6816 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is called Scritta paper. It is basically an acid-free paper made from either wood pulp, cotton or linen. It often has fillers added to it, the most popular being Titanium White Pigment. They use fillers to make the paper more opaque and harder to see through. They use the fillers because Scritta paper is very thin, because if they didn't the books would be very thick. I don't even know where you can buy the actual paper. In fact, it is so notorious difficult to work with that only a few select print houses do so. I heard they even need special equipment to print on them because most modern printers can't even handle the paper. The paper is used in hymnals dictionaries and encyclopedias too.

      @@joycreateslife Honestly your best bet is to try and contact a paper supply house and see what they can do for you. You are probably going to have to buy at least an entire ream of paper and it will more than likely be at a full size sheet which will likely be 33" by 46" ish. you can try this i found these links for th eU.S> www.thomasnet.com/products/bible-paper-56863608-1.html and the U.K. store.bookbinding.co.uk/store/product/7479/Offenbach-Bible-Paper-50gsm/

    Thank you for a good and honest review. I just purchased this and experiencing the same problems. But, honestly, in a small New York apartment during a pandemic, it will have to do. Applying patience of course.

    Just out of curiosity, is paper money sized? I assume it must be but not sure how or to what extent. There's going to be a lot of angry vegans if it turns out that they're carrying gelatin cash!

      I do not have a definitive answer for that but money is made using several printing processes but the rotogravure process is the part that does all the small detail. Its basically an intaglio process so i assume it has to have sizing on it or it would bleed a whole lot. More than likely its an acrylic type sizing or a plant based one because it would be less expensive than gelatin based sizing. I am making assumptions because the paper making process is typically held in secret to prevent counterfeiting. the only information i could find was on Wikipedia that says bank note paper is infused with polyvinyl alcohol or gelatin instead of water. they are being intentionally vague is my belief.
