Japanese people don't want to put people in an uncomfortable position. What if you actually aren't ok and don't want to talk about it? So small talk is more likely to be focused on actions rather than emotions.

When I was living in Wellington, New Zealand, even if it was pouring, no one used umbrellas because they would get turned inside out immediately from the wind. When I visited Japan, I was pleasantly surprised to see that this was not the case there.

I think many languages have a different between former language and colloquial. In Dutch the study a books greeting is for example "Hallo, hoe gaat het?" ("Hello, how are you?"), but in regular conversations that's seldom used (except by foreigners learning Dutch, lol). Most common we use "Hoi", "Alles goed?", "Hoe is 't", "Goedendag", and an endless array of local (variations) as we have over 600 local dialects.
