John was the genius behind the songs and music for sure but as a band leader you have to show honor and respect for your band mates. It's complicated I'm sure but John's personality and control issues played a huge role in the break up. I can see it in his personality even today. I respect John nevertheless but I'm calling it as I see it. No one ever said legends are perfect, we're all human ❤
That "John Fogerty solo project" is responsible for some of the all time classics of rock and Americana. But let's not forget the contributions the "rest of the guys" made on Mardi Gras...yeah... ...as much as we'd like to.
👍
I've been a CCR fan since the mid to late 60's. When they were together, they were tight. I've seen several of John's solo shows, and even though he does put on a great show it just doesn't have that 'Creedence' sound. Shame they couldn't have put aside their differences and continue on a bit longer. The amount of hits they had in such a short time was unreal. But its nice to hear Stu finally validate John's opinion of Saul Zaentz after all these years.
This is a superb interview, a joy for this fan of the original CCR and as one who attended several Creedence Clearwater Revisited shows. I always say or I realized in the last few years that of all the bands from the 60s, CCR’s stock has appreciated the most of any group! And to think that Fortunte Son was the B side of the single!
They could not stand being together with a Genius. A very common thing. Unfortunately.
I understand both sides of the story to a point , but if they don't appreciate John's "solo project" songs why did they play them in the "Revisited" band for 30 years? Should have played their own material lol They should of played "Joyful Resurrection" and see if the crowd would have liked it better lol
John's had a few solo hits - a couple as the Blue Ridge Rangers, and of course some big hits from his Centerfield album, but there's been decades long gaps between his records. I respect what Stu is saying here - Tom Fogerty was a talented guy whose talent was squashed by his more domineering younger brother. John should have learned from, say, Ray Davies; you can be creative and express yourself and still allow your brother to do some lead singing and write some songs. John may have been the genius in the band, but look at Brian Wilson - he gave lead vocals to his brother Carl, to Mike Love, Al Jardine. It doesn't have to be "my way or the highway".
Thank you for posting this video. It was interesting to hear Deniece explain the creative process that bubbles up from the artists' experimentation efforts while hanging out in the studio together.
Young ppl take his words to heart get a good manager!
The other two wanted too to write songs and they did, but we're no good..Tom Fogerty had talent, charisma and a great voice. He was CCR s George Harrison, Dave Davies, John Entwistle, Bill Wyman or any other "Quiet One".
1 hit record? John has had multiple hit albums includinga Grammy Best Album winner since Creedence. Cook has a lot of nerve. He is sitting in that big house by the sea watching dolphins jump because he rode John Fogarty's coat tails. It was John Fogarty's songs and voice and production that made Stu Cook a wealthy man. He was a mediocre bass player who would have been nothing without John and now he tries to minimalize John's importance to the band? Ungrateful and jealous...that is what all three of them were.
Very intelligent remarks from Stu, wish they could have worked it out and stayed good friends, thanks!
Stu, you owe john fogerty for everything. John could have got a bass, rhythm guitar, and drums from locals. CCR WAS JOHN FOGERTY! You owe him for everything you own, you owe him for being in the rock and roll hall of fame. You and doug eould have never got there without john!
The fact is, Stu was a big part of that, because he, Doug and Tom all wanted to screw the goose that was laying the golden eggs -- John. None of these three EVER wrote anything worth listening to. John wrote ALL of their hits and made them the money. When their egos couldn't accept that John WAS the song writing and arranging talent in the band, John just told them to take a hike and left. The proof of this was that after the break up, he was the ONLY one to ever have another hit and "Revisited" was just a cover band playing Jon's music!
Real.
The difference between being a rock superstar world renowned band and talented guys that play the circuit with limited marginal fame can by summed up like this: John Fogerty. If you want fame and fortune you need hit songs period. And John provided this.
Never wrote a song, mediocre musician, ungrateful to boot. Without Fogerty, the other players would never have been more than weekend bar band warriors. Jagoff.
MONEY!!
A legend
He's living in a house where he can watch the dolphins because of John Fogerty's talent.
It should have been John Fogerty and the CCR, like a lot of rock bands. No matter how good the band was, it was his unique vocals thsold the records.
I fully agree, with Stills solo album (with the giraffe) a very close second. All four of CSNY releassd fabulous work in 70-71. And then Young follows with Harvest along with the superb Nash /Crosby album.🎶✨🎶
The Evil One is an amazing album. A seriously underrated piece of work, except for the ones in the know. Thanks for the interview. ✌😊
Steely Dan took “ Can’t buy a thrill”from a Dylan song, and Dylan took “Time Out of Mind” from Steely Dan’s Gaucho album.
He is right. Ccr were 4 people. Fogerty has not been able to score any major hits on the charts.
Helluva blues singer. The best!
Sad Tom died of aids due to his gay homosexual lifestyle
What a hater.
I don't think the bitter jealousy inside Stu will ever go away, will it? Facts are facts. The Blue Velvets and The Golliwogs had no success with Tom Fogerty writing and singing lead. Once John got out of the Army and renamed the band and took over singing, writing and arranging duties, they were a smash success. And John has had multiple hit records and singles since the demise of CCR. Not just one. So enough with the b.s., Stu. Being jealous and bitter all your life is no way to live at all. And to say that John thought of you all as anchors holding him down is also ridiculous. John never once expressed that feeling in all the interviews he has done on CCR.
John has multiple times disparaged the playing of all of them. He referred to them as a 'couple of bums, that can't hold time' at various music fests, players whose limitations he knew. Because you know, he was some sort of Page, Beck, Clapton, Greeny on the git....Ah, not so much. Spewed forth tripe about them being jealous of him at every turn.Trite poor boy baby whining, vindictive crap, at every turn.... Oh, but "I'm so happy now", I "cant let the past get in the way", except it does.... Great muso, though. Just not any of the above ax men in any way.
good ranking and good collection!😊
So glad to hear a perspective other than Johns! Thank you. Also very nice to hear something complimentary about other bay area musicians particularly Garcia. Sick and tired of Johns cheap shots against the Grateful Dead a band that out toured out recorded and creatively outdid Creedence on a scale of about 25 to 1. Also Johns family band thing: gag me with a spoon. And the microbus with support our troops painted on it: Lame. Thanks again stu
I wish he would have mentioned what songs they had when they signed to Fantasy. They'd been recording there since 1964. Porterville should have been a hit.
Waddy’s the best his baby finger outguns most guitar players I’ve ever seen. Love ya buddy.
What a great interview,it's a surprising to hear Deniece talk about not knowing the Hip Hop community embracing her in such a big way as her songs especially on her early LP,'s have been sampled numerous times. Regardless, what a beautiful spirit and singer with so many great stories. Her LP's have really stood the test of time.
GOAT Band
There's a bunch of people who should not be in that are, but i agree with you
Hell yes, Robbie🖖
Peter is pretty out of it and no train of thought...
CCR was 90% John Fogherty no doubt, we just happened to realize how important the other 10% were. There was chemistry in the band. Too bad the band only lasted 5 years. Yet they produced so many great songs.
My whole life I’ve called you guys cliff dougard and steve Cookson. Because you’re not worth remembering.
I would disagree. Doug and Stu played some amazing music and without them there may still have been a John Fogerty, but their wouldn’t be a CCR as it was and their bass and drums sound is integral
John sound like a bastard...he may be talented but all the songs were played by 4 members together not just John alone!John is an idiot!!! John thinks he is clever but his mistakes allowed the band to be screwed by Zaent.
OMG!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
the more generic the better it means something to everyone! Moreso if its vague!
nonsense lyrics mean a million thing to a million different people!
Hifi sounds shit for rock needs raw edge from record or better still cassette
we love you Duff massively underrated LIKE Izzy
I bought your book! Can’t wait to read it! Yup. I am a nurse. Yup it’s so sad because many beautiful talented people especially creative people have these issues. But I think since the internet are helping each other understand, seek care, and outsmart these dreaded issues.
I have that Buckingham Nicks album! It is very good.
My 2 cents: As someone who has played in many bands for over 50 years I just want to say I get where they all are coming from. They were young and got some questionable advice from people they trusted but the bottom line is this: A band's sound is most definitely the combination of the contributions of every musician in the band. You take out one of them and their sound will change - sometimes for the better - sometimes for the worse. You either have chemistry or you don't. John is obviously a super talented writer and has an amazing unique voice that set them apart on the radio, and his band buddies were the perfect wings that allowed his talent to fly as high as it did. Anyhow, I loved the band and wish they hadn't had to go through this.✌❤🎸
Totally agree, you are spot on. CCR has been my altime favorite rock and roll band, been a huge fan have every albums they released. 😎👍
The other 3 were ingrates. They got rich on John's coattails. John was the writer, the singer, and the lead guitar player. He could have picked up 3 bums off the street and been as good as what he was with the original whiners he had in the band. If they were so instrumental in being a part of the band, why did their last album, "Mardi Gras" suck? Because Stu Cook & Doug Clifford wrote and tried to sing songs on it. They were not the Creedence sound. When they went out in their made up "Creedence Clearwater Revived" band, they didn't play Doug Clifford & Stu Cook hits like.........er........um..........there must be some, but I can't think of one. They played the songs that John Fogerty wrote, played and sang. They are the epitome of ingrates. I wouldn't have played with them at the R & R hall of fame induction either. Did they ever turn to John and say "Thank You" for making us rich?
Like 5he stones without bill and charlie
You are not wrong. The sad thing is they could have worked it out.
@@woodrowmagnus2535 John got pissed when Tom quit and demanded the others write songs or else the band was over. Why did he do this? Because Tom wanted to contribute songs and John wouldn't let him - which is why Tom quit. The other two guys were on Tom's side, so John said "OK, now we're all writing songs... or else."
