🎶 What Are Dare and Vedare?
- Dare: Transitioning from a note lower than F to F, this embellishment begins with an F gracenote to E, followed by a High G gracenote, and resolves on F with strong emphasis.
- Vedare: Used when moving from a note higher than F to F, this embellishment starts with a brief F on the beat, then adds the F gracenote to E, the High G gracenote, and resolves on F, maintaining rhythmic precision.

really nice lesson with lots of valuable tips
Very good Jim...some excellent scales to practise....i am hoping soon you will include the chedari in a lesson....i am learning that now for a new piob i am playing...i have your book but just struggling with the final execution of the chedari with the Piob high G an A..thnks Dave
This is so helpful and piping gold
I always struggle with F-gracenotes myself, so I'm super glad you've put this video togethre! Because bying "Rhythmic Fingerwork" and "Piobaireachd Fingerwork" wouldn't be all that accessibly helpful for me as a blind piper, this video really helps. Have you ever thought of making a specialized version for blind pipers where even just the descriptions or stories behind the movements are simply explained out loud? This is also the worst thing about how Jeannie Campbell's books about pipemakers is only available to a visual audience so it somewhat excludes us blind people from learning about the coolest history of our instrument too.
My favourite tune🙂 This has given me lots of pointers, thank you so much. I don’t suppose you would do a similar video for a hornpipe? I’m looking at learning crossing the Minch but any hornpipe would be good.
What electric chanter is this?
@@ianmccann381 blairbagpipes.com/product/blair-digital-chanter/
Excellent breakdown! Thank you for sharing your knowledge
Thanks! Simple to play but complex.
As always I have to tell you THANKS VERY MUCH with capitol letters. I am a humble amateur piper ( 67 y.o.) and since I became retired I took my bagpipes seriously than before. I tried alone ( I tried to learn watching videos) I never used the tuning meter, but recently a Galician friend ,he plays the Galician and GHB pipes, learnt to me to use the tuning meter and…..the sound of my bagpipes changed absolutely. I discovered a new world of sensations and sound, underlining always I am just an amateur and lover of bagpipes since my childhood. Thanks so much again for your lessons.
Woow This is very beautiful my friend! 👏🏼You did an awesome job 😊 (I covered this too btw) 🙃.
Sandy Hain 2nd batt Black Watch was composer good friend of my Father!
Love this!
Thanks for doing this
Well done Sir-thanks for doing what you do.
What is that instrument
This a (Bagpipe) practice chanter
Deger pipes? I'M JEALOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've always wanted one since 2005, specifically a first-generation model like you have, but they stopped making them in 2009. I have two sets neither of which work at all since I've owned them, which is the most upsetting thing ever, but I really like the actual sound of the first-generation Deger pipes FAR over that of the second generation, and while I helped Fagerstrom to make some HUGE tonal and tuning improvements to his Technopipes, the physicality of playing the Technopipes just cannot compare to a Deger. The only thing I wish were different about Deger was that it wouldn't be so complicated both to contact him but also to ship pipes back to him for repairing.
This video is so helpful, thank you
I am learning how the play Scotland the brave
I am having a great challenge….I am not sure if I will be able to do it
Keep at it and take it slowly.
@ Thanks very much indeed
Definitely robust sound
I like that tune! Never heard it before, and it is now my next project. Thank you!
Brilliant well done
Sounds lovely! May I ask, what chanter, chanter reed, drone reeds and bag?
Outer Tenor: Balance Tone Inner Tenor: E-zee Drone Bass: Balance Tone
GDE's?

The on-screen title of video seems misplaced.
This is my new favorite tune Mr. McGillivray! Thank you so much for composing it!
Glad you like it!
This is great - many thanks!
As usual great teaching!
Beautiful tune👏🏻👏🏻
So cool to play an instrument that old if it talk then stories it would tell 😊
Great to see the series continuing!! Love to hear the history and stories behind the tunes as well! I really like the tune too...
Beautiful tune, Jim!!
I want to learn that one!
What a great tune! Thank you.
Lovely tune! Many thanks for sharing.
Love this series!!! I recommend this to all our band members. Thank you for your great knowledge and sharing. So looking for more!!!
Very nice Jim, thanks.
Right on! Season Two, here we come!
Great news! I'm looking forward to Season 2. 👍
Congratulations Jim !
In the heavy throw from D, should the grace in the grip portion stay a D or become a B like other grip-based embellishments?
Yes, D gracenote, not B. JM
Great explanation thankYou 🦘
Couldn't be clearer, thanks.
Couldn’t agree more. I believe these series are the clearest, most accessible lessons available in the history of piping.
Very good teaching clip..
Loving the videos and lessons Jim. Could you make a breakdown for “lament for the little supper” from your rhythmic finger work- piobaireachd book pleaser
Former student of yours! Glad to see you're still the incredible teacher I remember.
Welcome back!
I am a piper but nowhere close to your level. I started in 2012 but as I play tunes due to a shift in PM of our band we had been taught some of the basics but not how they work together. I found your channel thru an email for one of the suppliers who sold your books and I purchased both. I found your website and found music where I could print it and download it. Subscribed to your website and purchased some credits for sheet music for the tunes and most of the more popular tunes for teaching and for students to work with. You are the best and also get a chuckle out of your two videos that I also have. Thank you so much for being out the for those of us who endeavor to learn the pipes. I am probably as old as Duff but not quite that level I am pretty sure anyway. LOL Thanks
This is really nice of you to say (and to remember old ‘Duff). 😉Thanks for this.
I am fairly new to piping and probably will never be a proficient, but these videos are invaluable. I doubt I'd even think to try Piobaireachd without this resource. I will watch these as long as I play the pipes and as long as they are available, thanks Jim.
Glad to help. Try to have fun with it.
