Hi Jim, Curious about how the silver mounts were made. Are they turned on a metal lathe? Or moulds? Interesting stuff. Cheers
Hi Jim, very good thank you. The John MacDonald score I have plays a D for the 4th note, 3rd bar, 4th part, 1st line, in the run up to the high A instead of the E that you play. Is this a common variation? Playing the E is much easier than getting the D 1/32 note in. I'b be interested in your thoughts on this difference.
Hi Geoffrey: I'm having trouble figuring out exactly what note you're referring to, but if I put a D on any note in that bar it sounds out of place to me. I don't think I've heard the tune played any other way than what I've published. JM
I really like this tune. It's one that I tend to play while tuning up. p.s. Your logo for Morag of Dunvegan is epic! Whomever is doing your graphic design is doing good work.
One of my favorites to play!
Thanks, Jim. Excellent as usual!
Simple one but it is one of my favourites, many thanks for the lesson.
This is supergood!! Competed with this one in the 80:s. Would have done a lot better had I seen your video!ð
Great video, thankyou!
That's a good lesson and a good song.
As always, thanks for the tutorial and explanations about the tune.

Trickey choon...
Awesome tune, perfectly played!! Thank you Mr. McGillivray!
Well done, Jim, and thank you. This is an iconic tune I've never yet tackled, but will do so now thanks to your very fine instruction.
Gold Solid Gold
Thank you - amazing instruction!
These exercises have been a huge help and my grips have definitely improved, but I still struggle with the "low A, B, grip to C" movement which begins so very many tunes (e.g. Green Hills of Tyrol). Many thanks for all your wonderful resources!!
@@michaellatzer5595 Glad to hear!
So, as with the Tarluath and Crenluath, from D, we use the B grace note in place of the D, I know it's a silly suggestion, but shouldn't we do a B then a C from the D note? LOL... Is it even possible? ð I tried it, and feel the C should come first, then the B, that way it's still doing a downward progression.
Good suggestion Alan, but donât you think the instrument is hard enough already??! JM
@@Pipetunes There is some love of suffering, and over-the-top extremism I've noticed, regarding bagpiping, not sure what that's all about. And, yes, I agree.
Very nice
Wonderful tutorial, many thanks! As a mature learner, the principles and exercises in "Rhythmic Fingerwork" have been a godsend, as are the resources in the Pipe Box channel. Very happy new year to you and many more years of piping!!
Thank you!

Chanter of course

Suspiciously similar to I See Mull...
I think the timing is similar to I see Mull but the melody is quite different.
What a marvelous tune! I forget besides being a great piper you are also an artist, as well.
Thatâs nice of you to say Alan. Thank you.
Yeah, learned this tune at the hand of Bruce Hitchings back in 2010 at COP in Carlsbad. Haven't played it since, Bruce fondly recalls his friendship with "Big Ron", and now thanks to your description of him, I can understand why they called him "The Gentle Giant", I just want to thank you Jim for breathing life back into this tune for me, it brings back good memories.
That's great to hear. I'm glad that this video brought back good memories.
@@Pipetunes I did spend about 15 - 20 re-visiting this tune with you on this video, this is high quality $55.00 an hour lesson material here Jim, and you are giving it to us for free?? - Cheers!
Great tune, talented composition
ð
Hi jim, is it the whole phrase in the last two bars of the first singling variation that you are making majestic or the very last bar of the phrase before you go into the doubling variation, my second question is, do you do this to help slightly slow the variation down before you slightly quicken the tempo for the doubling?
I would say it's the very last bar, Owen. I don't slow the end of the singling down before the doubling. Just roll right into the doubling.
@ Extremely interesting , so just to clarify jim the rule of thumb you use is just slow down the end of the Doubling variations when your going into a singling variation and just play all singling into doubling variations without any slowing down of the end of the singling variation?
What a great tune
Thank you
Love It !.. my next tune !.. working on it already !
Great to hear!
@@Pipetunes with my TH-cam Premium subscription I can slow the video down to 1/2 speed and then 3/4 speed to try playing along..

My guess, is the tuning screw, but I only played the flute 60 years ago.
Very nice.
Nice tune for a brilliant bunch!
A really nice catchy tune, thanks.
it's been a while since I've played pibroch, mostly been 2/4 marches for the last few years, does the Suibhal/doubling get ever so slightly speeded up after the first variation?
Very slightly!
Congratulations ð! Another successful 6/8. âĪïļ âĪâĪ it!
This was my first competition season, our band director warned us our nervousness would be present before about 3 games then we would relax and be able to focus on our circle. I would like to try a solo competition maybe this season however I was warned that being 40 it was better to focus on the band rather than doing solo playing as the younger competitors will tend to win the prizes being as they are the future of piping and therefore need all the encouragement they can get. I am worried that Iâd look a little out of place at my age trying solo competition for a first time.
I know that the PPBSO and the EUSPBA have divided grade 4 and grade 5 piping events into "Adult" and "Youth". Check with your local jurisdiction.
Good 6/8 composition, I like the way it builds up to the top hand,
Thanks for listening
Inspiring, thanks!
Excellent, good work Jim
