🔴 Rare Book Cafe COFFEE BREAK No. 77: Bookseller and songwriter Joe Maynard
Co-hosts Ed Markiewicz and Lee Linn join bookseller and book fair promoter Richard Mori, The Road Warrior, to welcome to the show New York bookseller Joe Maynard, who is also a songwriter, hiker and art and music lover.
Joe shares tales of his experiences in the book trade, including the time he had to clean out a deceased man’s apartment and the discoveries that led him to learning about an Oregon internment camp for conscientious objectors during World War 2. That led into his early explorations of the Beat movement in the 1950s in San Francisco.
The discussion seems to inspire Ed Markiewicz to pursue an article for an upcoming issue of Book Lovers’ Paradise Magazine on the phenomenon of combing through dead people’s collections, something familiar to book and paper sellers and collectors. You can read the first two issues of the magazine at the links below.
You can read Book Lovers’ Paradise Magazine here:

Joe also shares a song he wrote based on experiences as a young man in New York City. This performance is the first musical treat for Rare Book Cafe fans.
Joe will be an exhibitor at the Books in Boston, the Shadow Show to the Boston International Book Fair. The Shadow Show will be November 9, 2024 at the Hilton Back Bay at 40 Dalton Street in Boston. It’s around the corner from the Boston International Book Fair, which runs November 8-10 at the Hynes Convention Center at 900 Boylston Street in Boston. The Shadow Show runs 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on November 9, and closes as the Boston International Book Fair opens.

Well, hello! What a selection of great finds 👍 Once again I've learned about something I never knew existed: autograph dolls (1959)! And I see on the catalogue blurb it says they make great gifts for teenagers. Who knew??! I also loved the 1960 TV guide listings. Looks like there was a regular TV broadcast from POTUS, as well as top-tier stars from a bygone age. Thanks for sharing the bounty 🤗

Here in Philadelphia, PA there are several letterpress retail stores. I use to work for a printer who used a letterpress machine and the machine that produced the individual letters. The rhythm of the machine as he used it was interesting. Enjoyed this video.
