Currently developing a game called Idle Fisher!
Automation! #indiegame #indiedev
In this video I go over the logic and code behind how I got automation to work in my cozy fishing game! I make machines called auto fishers that collect fish for the player.

Its only right for them to be machines, right?

In this video I add Auto Fishers to the game, transitioning it from basic fishing mechanics to incorporating automated systems for idle play! These are machines that fish autonomously, which replicates the players' fishing mechanics and stores fish until collected. The Auto Fishers user interface is integrated seamlessly with the game's isometric style, providing features like leveling up and d...

Golden fishes are rare fish that the player can find to get a temporary boost. Either a lump of money or a short duration buff. Some might say this is similar to other games, but I don't see a resemblances.
Hold your breath, time to talk about fishies! #devlog #indiegame

Creating My Dream Idle Game | Idle Fisher Devlog #0

This video introduces Idle Fisher, a relaxing, fishing-themed idle game in development. I share my journey of building the game from scratch using C and SDL, with pixel art and simple mechanics. Players will fish, earn money, and upgrade their equipment. The game features immersive environments, auto fishers, NPCs, combos, and more. I aim to make a cozy, engaging experience while improving my c...
I have watched a lot of devlogs but I like your devlogs because you are funny and you explain the code😂😊❤
Add tax collectors who steal your money and something to multiply your fish per second like mult in balatro
This game seems really cool, hope to see you keep up with the project! Really loved how you went in detail with all the technical stuff in this Devlog, looking forward to seeing more! My suggestions, (if it matters): - Add companions, like cats, that will follow the player around and then dive in the water and catch certain fish from time to time. - I think sound design is really important for an idle game and with the ambient fishing style, I think utilizing a good sound engine could go a long way - Chum or some other item that can be thrown in front of the Player or Auto Fisher to attract new unique fish or to increase the quality of fish caught for some time, incentivizing players to maintain the Auto Fishers for higher profit That's all I got lol, great work so far!
Really interesting game. As I like trading games, I would love the option to storge the fish with better and better silos - waiting for a price increase. Freezing costs money over time, or is expensive. Maybe also different buyers which are farther away so take longer travel times, where you have to buy different vehicles. Just an idea, I do understand, that you need to focus on a lean core gameplay loop
You should add a flying fish! 🐟 Or some leviathans that have a uniqe and really hard minigame!
Hey, I would love to make some fish pixel art for your game!
Your art is absolutely wow! Keep it up!
Thanks for including some details of implementation, it makes it so that I can learn a bit more about how to code certain features instead of the video being solely for inspiration or seeing the status of your game.
hmm, automation!
you are unexpected to see here haha
Will I be able to get it on my calculator
Need any help with sound design?
Ain’t no way I completely missed this
I love this idea but usually don't autocollecting things usually have a lower chance or are slower than the player doing the thing? Like correct me if I'm wrong but doesnt it kinda take away the motivation for the player to actually fish if the autofisher has the same chance of ultra rare fish?
This is true, some other people have mentioned that it would be cool to have only the player be able to catch super rare fish so there is still some insentive to keep playing the game. I plan on implementing a feature like this soon.
@@FishyGamesDev Ah very cool very cool. Of course it is YOUR game so don't let anyone pressure you to change your vision, best of luck with everything!
I really dig that autofisher design. Really excellent pixel art.
Tip: When making a dev log, most of us players (not game devs) just wanna see the gameplay not get into the super technicals (talking about complex code), to us it sounds like a nerd talking about his calculations no offense and is off-putting. Other than that, pretty good video. If your goal is to get wishlists this is the way I would go, make the video more entertaining instead of highly technical (makes some of us feel dumb).
idk what ur on about the technical stuff is what makes this guys videos different
@@ifartmoney wrong, most devs that wishlist a game never buys it, so why appeal to devs if you're not going to get sales? This is according to Chris Zukowski on Code Monkeys channel. The average gamer doesn't want to think about all the technicals they care about the fun part, which is the gameplay not the code, so idk what you're on about. Dani videos never go on the technicals either its unappealing.
I think that going into code is way more enjoyable for watching, plus its also what 95% of other devlog youtubers do. He seems to love sharing his passion with others and showing his love for his craft. Also, about you wanting to make it more entertaining for the audience, he has no idea what we enjoy! He is making a video on what he thinks is entertaining! If you don't like the content, don't watch it, also try not to be a smartass! Let me touch on this again, "When making a dev log, most of us players (not game devs) just wanna see the gameplay not get into the super technicals" That's literally what a devlog is for!!! touching on and talking about all the code for it, you just want a gameplay trailer, not a devlog. Please think before typing!!! Don't be a Debbie Downer.
@@ichthyosaur1431 so apparently having criticism in 2024 is being a debbie downer. I should just accept everything as it is and not have a opinion you're basically saying. This guy literally said he's making a game to sell, and according to hard researched data, devlogs are not good for making money because most people that watch "Dev logs" is developers. So that is why it appeals to you. The sad fact is most of these developers never buy the game, so you are harming his potential sales with your opinion. You have devs who spend years on their games doing devlogs, and then when the game releases, it's only the sound of crickets. And you wonder why 95% of these games that do dev logs fail because of people like you not being honest with them. You just always want positivity all the time no matter if it harms people, and that's a problem.
@ maybe you're right! I apologize for the rude way I acted, you just seemed a tad rude with the way you put it! again I apologize for that.
When it released is it gonna be available on mobile
I don't have any plans for it to be on moble right now, as I believe I would have to remake the game. But maybe in the distant future
Games going great!
Great video! Will the auto fisher be connected to the date on the players computer? If so they will be able to just change the date to get infinite fish. Maybe something you could try to fix in the future?
I did think about this when programming this part. The only way I could think to fix this is either have a server or use a time api which would both cost money. Currently I think its just up to the player if they want to cheat or not. Unless theres a better way that I'm missing?
@@FishyGamesDev You could maybe use one of the many free NTP Time servers and request the time from one of those?
Joe Pera of game development, what a lovely speaking voice.
Keep it up!
what if there was a upgrade on each area that unlocks a boat that takes you out to a deeper spot where you can catch rarer fish
this game looks so cool but i think u should make the fishing bar look less static
What if combo bars where in a different position, even for the same type of fish. Like, one time it's in the center, another time it's more to the right or left. This creates different dynamics as you'll have different, easier and harder fishing times, creating diversity on the fishing mechanic.
Loving the series so far. Looking forward to the finished game
For the CSV list of fish, the IO of the users computer / game engine might get slow or laggy or decrease frames, especially if you're editing the file (idk if you are). Would saving the data in a data structure IN the code not work?
Currently I'm loading the data from the CSV on startup. Then storing it in memory in a structure. I thought this method would make it pretty to read but, maybe it would just be more efficient to store in a structure in the first place
@ I mean if it's only on load I don't think it's even worth your time fixing it. Good luck with the game!!
Keep it up!! I love this video style
great video, looking forward to the next one!
u deserve more subs
quality is insane
last year lmao
Hi again, I've got some good ideas There is a tactic of simulator games in Roblox The luck factor and ranking These two almost make you addicted to the game you can add them if you want Also, I think you decided that the game should be original Then combine it with pokemon (upgrade to stats or something) And a few more suggestions are to breed fish(production as AFK though) , add an aquarium, Throwing bait into the water That's what I'm thinking of right now Use what you like
I like some of these ideas! I'll see what works!
Good job! And I'd love the idea of raising and multiplying fishes by breeding in an aquarium, do you planning some feature like that? For an idle game loop theme it would be great in my opinion :P
I didn't have anything planned like that yet but, I'll take it into consideration!
Love watching, keep it up! I’m starting to learn game dev myself so I’m doubly invested in your journey.
I have a concept similar to this for one of my school projects👀
This lowkey looks so interesting, good luck with your game :D it would be cool to see the game change seasons, such as winter summer etc, it may give it more life
It is indeed winter or something.
The last year joke was great!
You should add frogs to the games, especially ones with ushanka’s 😉😉
Interesting idea, Ill take it into consideration!
@ thank you, can’t wait for the next devlog. Great videos, especially for somebody who just started
This is how you do a devlog, inspirational the amount of effort you feed into your content let alone your game. Looking forward to future updates, I'm.. hooked.
Looks fun! And I know it has nothing to do with the video, but I like the starting at #0. What a programmer.
Fight the fish.
Like whaling or something would be cool
Yes there needs to be a final boss where one of your catched fishes fights back
Stumbled across this when I was finding videos to learn from, for my idle game project. I love the concept of your game, Please add more devlogs ASAP. Can't wait!
I’m in. I’ll hold you accountable. Also can you help me calculate when I’ll die, too?
Subbed! Looking forward to seeing progress. In my experience, what makes or breaks any fishing game is the catching mechanic. It’s going to be repetitive no matter what (it’s fishing) but whatever you can do to make it unique and interesting I think will benefit the game overall. Especially if that’s the only thing the player will be doing. I loved Stardew Valley’s fishing mini game. It had a nice difficulty curve, ways to upgrade and plenty of variation.
B4 your game turns into an AAA game. Change the font, thank you. And good luck
Couldn't hear anything you are saying with full volume, increase your overall video volume
How to play this game..plz tell . I love fishing games. I am also learning game dev
very excited to see how this progresses!
Lookin' Great! I'll be happy to see the progress of your project.
Wish you the best
The art is actually so good
