In this video, we'll take you on a journey through the rugged outback, crossing rivers and creeks in our trusty Land cruiser, to discover some of the most breathtaking waterfalls in the region. But be warned, our river crossing at Ivanhoe Crossing didn't quite go as planned, and we ended up getting FLOODED! We hauled a** 57km to Mary Pool, a beautiful free camp situated by the river. This spot was perfect for an overnight stay and had toilets and plenty of shade to retreat from the beaming sun.
We continued on to Doon Doon Road House, located on the Great Northern Highway 110 km south of Kununurra, and parked up for the night. This roadhouse is part of the Camping with Custodians Network, which is Australia's first programme that has developed high quality campgrounds on Aboriginal land.
The roadhouse was $35 per night for power and water and had beautiful facilities including toilets, showers, a full kitchen, a BBQ, a fire pit, and even some gym equipment for use. The roadhouse had bits and pieces of grocery essentials and food available; we picked up one of their hamburgers, and they did not disappoint.
From Doon Doon Roadhouse, you can purchase a key ($30 and $20 key bond) to access the dreamiest waterfall tucked away in the Kimberley's. Just a short drive down the highway and through the locked gate, you will enter the private property of Harry, who has graciously allowed travellers access to the amazing Harry's Hole. The track in isn't for the fainthearted and can only be accessed with a 4WD. You will pass through multiple creek crossings that will have water wells over your car's bonnet. As always, it is best to walk the track before driving. At the end of the track, right by the waterfall, is probably the most stunning campground. If you have a rooftop tent or away, this one is for you. The campground offers breathtaking views of the waterfall and surrounding nature, providing a truly immersive experience for nature lovers. Remember to bring all necessary supplies, as this remote location does not have any amenities nearby. To the left of the waterfall, you can scale the rock formations to multiple pools at the top, offering the most picturesque 360 views of surrounding landscapes. As we mentioned in the video, be careful when climbing up the rocks and always watch your step.
On to the next, hello Kununurra. We would have loved to free camp around the area, but it was 40 degrees and we could not sleep through the heat, nor was it fair on the little one, so we spent 3 days at Kimberleyland waterfront holiday park. $40 per night for the first 2 nights, and then we got a text message offering a discounted rate of $25 to extend. Kununurra is a great place to base yourself for exploring the surrounding attractions, such as Lake Argyle, the Bungle Bungles, Ivanhoe Crossing, and multiple nearby waterholes. The holiday park had excellent facilities, including a pool, camp kitchen, and laundry, making our stay comfortable and enjoyable, and is home to a residential freshwater crocodile called Gummy, who comes to the boat ramp each evening to say g'day
We spent our days trying our luck at catching a barra and driving out to (not-so) secret springs to wash off the days sweat. The track is 4WD accessible only, as you will cross around 15 creek crossings. Some of these are short and shallow, while others are long and can be quite deep in places. When you arrive, you are greeted by a tropical oasis filled with lush greenery and refreshing waterfalls. If your feeling game, you can take on the challenge of scaling the waterfall to reach the infinity pools at the top overlooking the stunning valley. If you're not up for the challenge, you can simply relax and enjoy the serene atmosphere surrounding you.
When our time in Kununurra was up, we decided to call into Lake Argyle, which is known for being a Lappers hotspot. We didn't have quite the reception we were hoping for or expecting after seeing the stunning photos online-more of an Instagram vs. reality kind of moment. We cut our stay to only one night and headed for the NT where we could explore more secluded and authentic travel experiences.
