    An issue im facing whenever doing ujoints up here in the rust belt is that no matter how careful I am on the disassembly, somehow the replacement joint is too wide to get the clips in properly. On severely rusted shafts I will cut out the trunnion and push the caps into the center so as to not break the grooves. Ive resorted to grinding a wee bit of the caps down, I don't like doing this but I have no choice. Is this the fault of cheap aftermarket joints or am I bending the yokes without realizing it? Been struggling with this issue for a long time.

    Sounds nice until support after isn't there. After the last retube mine is worse than ever and was told to pound sand by Tom Woods. Can mark the driveline turning clocked in any orientation and tune is off center causing mine. Tom woods part I paid for but was told to pound sand.

      Hi Kyle, Shawn Wood here. I looked up the records on this to try and gain some insight as to what you are upset about and here's what I can find. We lengthened and re-balanced a shaft for you in Dec 2023 then you called in April 2024 where you and I had a 1 minute and 15 second conversation. I don't remember the details of that conversation I may have said that I don't know how else to fix the problem or I may have explained that a double cardan shaft with a slip yoke style transfer case can result in high speed vibrations. I can guarantee that I did not tell you to "pound sand". At any rate, I'm sorry that we weren't able to help you and hope you were able to find the solution you were looking for somewhere else.

      @@tomwoodscustomdriveshafts7159 I informed you it is substantially worse than before. As shown in this video it clearly falls into the Dynamic vibration category. I understand that this style is less than ideal however no SYE'S are made for the Ford T-Cases so unfortunately is what it is in that regard. You did not specifically say pound sand but stated we checked it it said it was good so we don't need to check it again. When it's a dynamic issue. The bigger frustration is I have clocked it all over on T-Case splines as well as all 4 locations on diff flange and it is 100% the same so still leading towards a driveshaft issue. I placed a dial indicator and measured the run-out near pinion and T-Case and the whole tube top to bottom is not centered. I even ran it and marked it and it's clear where the tube is not centered. Have videos showing this etc. That's the reason I am frustrated. Vibration starts at 2,300rpm shaft speed and gets bad at 2,500rpm and remains bad to and past 3,000rpm. That is shaft speed not engine RPM. Gets a hair better under load and on deceleration. Worse when no load which again points towards a shaft balance concern. That's the frustration.

    • @Turboexplorer
      @Turboexplorer 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@tomwoodscustomdriveshafts7159 Angle at T-case is 13* and pinion is down 1.6* and is leaf sprung so under load should minimize to near 0 under operating conditions. Shaft length from center of u joint to center of CV is 35 1/4" so its nkt a super short shaft. Angle does suggest a double cardon should be best however with this style of slip on T-Case maybe a standard style driveline with substantially less rotating weight would be better. I belive the current one which is a 3" tube, 1350s is 27lbs. Which is a lot of weight to be spinning at 3,000-3,500rpm.

      Harmonics probably. Everything in the vehicle that is moving is vibrating, just at varying intensities and frequencies. At certain points multiple parts of the system will all synchronize which will increase the perceived intensity.

    It would be nice if they could use a true constant velocity joint on drive shafts. The problem though is protecting the rubber boot that seals the CV joint so dirt does not get into the lubricating grease. Easy to do amongst the front or rear suspension members but hard out in the open where a traditional drive shaft is used.

    I had an 'old rusty shaft' that his procedure didn't work on. Tried torching it, penetrant oil, smacking it every which way, air hammer, etc. with no luck. I couldn't just buy a new shaft - because they don't make them anymore for a 34 year old car. I eventually put it on the press. I didn't put it on the press to begin with because whatever geniuses designed this shaft made the ends round and tapered with no way to squarely and safely place it on the press. I eventually managed to rig something up using various sized square steel bars bent into half circles as a mounting surface and break it free. It took _8 tons_ of force. Then I had to do it 2 more times. Having completely restored a car, this is one job I would _never_ do again. I'd pay someone else to deal with it.

    I put new u joints on my rear drive shaft because I had to take the transmission and transfer case out. Now I notice that at 75+ there is a vibration feeling. I tried my best to mark the drive shaft but because this was my first time I think some of the components are not longer in the correct position. I also don't know if those new u joints are good because they felt kinda tight even out of the box.

  • @tomwoodscustomdriveshafts7159

    There are a lot of comments about how much more difficult this is on an old rusty shaft. That is true, a rusty old shaft will be more difficult, but the overall process is the same. I just wanted to demonstrate how we do it, in the shop, with new parts. Once you understand the concept you can apply the same concept to almost anything. When making the video we didn't have any crusty old shafts laying around so I worked with what we had on hand. I promise, we use the same basic procedures on older shafts too. When it comes to replacing joints in a shaft that is decades old and badly rusted there is a paradox. If the shaft is in that bad of shape it is probably not worth salvaging anyway. If your drive shaft is so rusty that you can't get the joints out using the procedures shown in this video, or this video 4xshaft.com/blogs/general-tech-info-articles/diy-u-joint-replacement, it is usually best to replace the shaft entirely. If the joints are so stuck that you have to use a torch, or have to hit the yokes as hard as you can with a heavy hammer, you will be further damaging the yokes in the process. The yokes are important, precision machined parts, if they are damaged, distorted, or extremely rusty, they need to be abandoned and replaced.

    • @tomwoodscustomdriveshafts7159
      @tomwoodscustomdriveshafts7159 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, the rust shouldn't affect the balance but what the rust indicates about the shaft probably does. A rusty shaft is an old shaft and an old shaft almost certainly has worn, loose, and distorted parts, all of which will affect the balance.

    95 Camaro z28 80mph vib. Every body has a different solution. Q. did it vibrate off the show room floor at 80mph. I doubt it. In fact, that issue would have been on blast in 93 and either killed the car line or Chevy would have recalled the car due to safety. Let's accept its not the driveline and aluminum DL won't really fix it. Somebody said change pinion angle to + 1.5 ... NOW we are getting somewhere. What changes things at 80 mph? Weight on the car. Rear suspension mounting wear?

    • @tomwoodscustomdriveshafts7159
      @tomwoodscustomdriveshafts7159 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that the shaft didn't vibrate off the show room floor. It is not uncommon for vehicle to have these sort of problems when new. It won't be every single car or truck but there are certain vehicles that are prone to drive shaft vibrations, even when new. However, lets assume that it was smooth in 1995 when the car was new. Here's what has changed since then, 29 years have passed. That means that if your shaft is a stock shaft it has 29 years of wear on it. Worn out parts will cause the shaft to wiggle around slightly, run off center, and cause high speed vibrations. The thing that changes at 80 mph is the centrifugal force of any imbalances in the drive shaft. These forces quadruple when the speed doubles. Because centrifugal forces are a product of mass x speed, reducing the mass with an aluminum shaft should actually improve the situation quite significantly. I don't think your vibrations are angle related, I think that they are dynamic vibrations. More about all of this here 4xshaft.com/blogs/general-tech-info-articles/diagnosing-drive-shaft-vibrations

    This may sound dubious but Sir, let's assume we live in an ideal world, would running a cv joint with zero drive angle last longer than a cv joint with some degree of drive angle. Thank you so much for your time and answer.

    • @tomwoodscustomdriveshafts7159
      @tomwoodscustomdriveshafts7159 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, the less angle things are running at the longer they will last. And the more angle something runs at the faster it will wear out. There is something to be said about grease circulation at zero angle though. If there is zero angle the grease won't circulate around the parts as it should. However, this might be a bit of a paradox because if there is zero movement in the joints there is not really a need for grease in the first place.
