Pillar Drill Lamp. Industrial light.
มุมมอง 933 ปีที่แล้ว
An old pillar drill owned by Charlotte 's grandfather. When he passed away it was left in his shed, we quietly pinched it and turned it into a lamp for Sue, so she has something her father often used and can use it for a whole new purpose.

Great job .Im about to build a hicap myself .nice to see it all coming together.
@charlieneale42 thank you very much. Good luck with your project
Best of luck Ben, first time pass is my bet ?
Ben, don’t spoil the ship for a ha’peth of tar, an outrigger is seen as a replaceable part. I worked on the original production of the HCPU and other than the Wolf it was my favourite, glad your saving another one.
@stevepickering5866 thank you. To hear that from someone that worked on the original is very reassuring. I didn't know they were a replaceable part
The only thing to do with old landy’s is a full strip down and replace everything that is rusted because it was not treated at production
Take the hard drive out of the dead laptop and buy a usb to sata cable. Then you'll be able to find the photo's that were stored.
Thank you so much, I will definitely try this
Brilliant video as always!!!
My restoration is moving at a snail's pace in this grotty weather and you have put me to shame. I am surprised you had a problem fitting your battery box - mine went together easily. For the brake pipes along the rear axle I used hydraulic hose which doesn't require accurate bends and it looks fine too. It could even be OEM. Good luck with the MOT.
This weather is horrible to be doing these projects in. I don't know whether I was doing something wrong or the seat box has twisted out of shape over the years, but it was a sod. I like the idea of hydraulic hose, a much simpler way.
Good luck!
@@adamlambert1307 thank you
Loving the standard look 👍🏻. Well done . Always harder on your own
Thank you, I really appreciate that, it is hard and not many keep Land Rovers very standard (which is of course fine) but I want this to be as original as possible, scars and all.
Coming on faster than mine!
Haha, thank you. Time, money, weather and inclination are a lot of factors to slow down these sorts of projects. My ADHD goes into overdrive and I rush to try and get things done. this is the first time I have taken more time and effort.
Coming along nicely
Thank you very much
at last someone who knows what they are talking about with grinding back the weld, ive always thought this u need to go that bit deeper on a weld,
Thank you, I have just had to watch my own video to remind myself of which bit you meant, but as soon as I saw it I knew and yes, LEAVE SOME METAL!!!!! I hate seeing it disappear in sparks.
That rear cross member looks solid as a rock, need that on mine! Did you get it as box section and cut the ends?
@tbruce-sawsandsplitting thank you. Yes, I got a bit of box section and capped the ends off, and then I sleeved the holes where the tow hitch bolts go so that no moisture can get inside the box and rot it out from the inside.
@ bomb proof! Very glad I came across your channel mate, I was gonna buy a cheapo of eBay but won’t be doing that anymore!!
@@tbruce-sawsandsplitting I bought my welder and steel for less than it was the buy a quarter chassis and cross member. And if I may say so, it is built to a much higher standard
@@MicallefMade certainly looks a lot better than the ones I’ve looked!
Just picked an 83 110 hcpu so I’m gonna be re watching all of these a LOT!! 🤙 thanks for sharing
@tbruce-sawsandsplitting That's great, I hope to see something of your journey, good luck with it. I will hopefully have another video this week
@ I’ll try to get most of it but half the time I get swept up in the task at hand and forget to film!
VERY NICE CROSSMEMBER AND WITHOUT ALL THE TRAPS LANDROVER BUILD INTO THEM, GOOD WORK.
Found you from Facebook, Malcolm didn’t like my response to him moaning about your “TH-cam plug” 😂
@@Martinsboard I didn't realise I was breaking the rules 🫣
@@Martinsboard Also, I can't see your comment, so I presume it was removed
@@MicallefMade Yea, from what I’ve seen he can be a fountain of knowledge, but he’s a bit petty with his admin role 😂 considering the page has 20k members and you’re contributing to group content I don’t see the problem, just a disgruntled admin that doesn’t want you to get a couple of extra subs 😁
One can't fault the workmanship but one has to question the rationale behind putting a X member fabricated from 6mm plate onto a frame fabricated from 2mm plate.
@defendermodsandtravels I completely understand what you mean. The main two reasons are, firstly, it adds a bit more protection should I bump into something or someone bump into me, pushing down the length of the 2mm chassis is stronger than pushing the corner if I caught it on something. Secondly and mainly, because it was free steel 😂
@@MicallefMade If it was a freebie that's a different matter. I wouldn't worry about little bumps - Edna will win most arguments. I have just replaced the bottom flange on the LH rear corner of my Defender and used a bit of steel cut from the old battery box which is just under 2mm thick. Because one can't keep the mud out I have made holes underneath where I can flush out with a hose. This approach has worked well and I have very little rust on a 33 year old vehicle.
@@defendermodsandtravels Haha, I hope she doesn't have to win many arguments. After watching your video I have just removed my battery box and I am waiting for it to arrive and refit. You were right that it is a sod without taking the seat box out. Rust and ally rot, the two worst nightmares.
I've got the MoD one piece bonnet stay on mine. Still managed to catch myself on the bonnet catch though !
@@red9zero ouch, I really do feel your pain
ive got a strut out of a ford fiesta on mine had it one for years its brilliant its off the back hatch
@@graham-martin5847 nice, is that with or without a wheel on the bonnet?
@@MicallefMade no wheel on front I've got 32 inch massive wide tyres I couldn't even lift it onto the bonnet if I tried as rims are steel too
@@graham-martin5847 No wonder it isn't on the bonnet haha
Hi mate, doing something very similar with my grandfather's 110 Hi-cap. Have you got a link to that underbonnet gas strut at all? Thanks!
Hi @club86, unfortunately it is a home made thing. I bought a pair of rams for another project and they didn't suit because they were too powerful, but they worked well for lifting the bonnet with wheel. If you want any close up pictures or details send me a message and I will send them over to you. I might even be able to find the second ram.
Convincing me to save up for a MIG welder!
@Club86 you don't have to buy an all singing and dancing one. My one paid for itself on the first job years ago. I had to replace my rear cross member, and the welder was cheaper than the cross member alone. I bought the steel and made pretty much what I have done on this 110. They are worth every penny when you can save for one and not pay a garage to do the work.
Looking really good mate!! Inspiring
@@dunnetw Thank you, that is very kind and very much appreciated.
looking good mate. Youve got a good skill there. I always paint my galv parts for extra protection. thoughts?
@willnorth3199 Thank you very much. I haven't ever thought about doing that, but it wouldn't hurt to add another layer of protection, I think I will copy you. Thank you for the idea.
Thank you, just starting my 110 project, keep the videos coming, they help,
@johnrumble424 That's great, keep us updated with your progress. I am no Oracle on the subject and you may know more than me, but if you ever have a question, just ask. I like bouncing ideas off each other.
1st time on a Land Rover, so new adventure for me too. But really looking forward to the frustration and reward. Yes I’ll defo ask a question or two I expect.
Loving this…. Doing a very similar resto/rebuild myself on a 110 at the moment. Always nice to see what other folks are up to.
@@barnbuilds7833 Thank you. I hope you're getting on nicely with your 110 as well?
Top job nice work👌
@@V8guy3500 Thank you
plate looks good i personally cut the hole rite out and cut a plate to fit flush in the hole then flap disc it back so you cant see any repair at all but i am a fanny and it has to be perfect lol
Thank you. I never thought to cut it out fully and fill in the gap. I will try that on the hole by the battery. keep an eye out on the next video and see how it goes. you might see a disaster unfold haha.
@@MicallefMade use magnets to keep it level go round do spot welds grind it back then run a full bead around grind it back lot of work but worth it on stuff you can see
Very neat job, but flush fit plate repair for the win 👍🏼
@rustandoil Thank you, I will try it on the next hole. In hindsight I should have done that to all of the repairs, but you live and learn.
Top work 👍I’m impressed ,the rear crossmember is indeed a mud shelf ,they came from the production line already rusting🥴. Enjoying your content immensely.
@@V8guy3500 Thank you very much, I really appreciate the comment.
Just started following you. Nice work but what welder are you using? Very impressed for a rebuild in a drive
Thank you very much, I really appreciate the kind comment. It isn't anything fancy but it was all I could afford. it is a SWP 210 www.waspsupplies.com/swp-redline-mig-210-turbo-230-volt-mig-welder-1350-p.asp I bought it years ago to make a cross member and have abused it ever since. I would love an upgrade that would allow me to weld for longer before needing to cool down, but you can't have everything in life all at once.
How do you rate the paint you used.
So far so good. I am very bad at painting, always to thick or to thin, but this has been kind to me and dried very nicely. where it has been on for a few months, it seems to have sealed very well. i have used other chassis type paint and rust starts to creep through, but not with this one.
should use poly bushes
@@willnorth3199 I should, but I want to keep it as original as practicable. She will also probably only do 500 - 1000 miles a year. Thanks for the advice though, all ideas and advice is most welcome.
@MicallefMade fair enough, your doing a great job. im currently restoring a Series 1. you think yours is rusty, you should see mine hahaha
@willnorth3199 Thank you very much. Wow! I would love to do a series 1, but I have never driven one or worked on one. I would be leaping into the unknown. How do you find sourcing parts?
@MicallefMade me neather! ive never driven one, never even done a project before. im only 19! i had it set in my mind i wanted to do it, so i worked hard and did it! if u have insta ill send u some pics... parts arnt to hard, theres plenty of websites out there.
@@willnorth3199 Good for you! I would love to see it, my insta is @benjaminmicallef . It is satisfying but hard to work hard to make these projects come together
Stumbled across your videos there mate. Really good work. You have a well kitted out garage there! Top workmanship! You must have really understanding neighbours lol
Thank you mate. It has taken many years to get the kit together but I am pretty self sufficient (most of the time). The neighbours are brilliant, I never start before 10 with noise on the weekends and make sure it is one weekend a month at most so not to upset anyone.
same year as mine chassis aint seen a welding torch yet so i got it galvanised lol,if that thread issue happend to me i would of ran the mig round it then tapped a new thread onto it but luckely i have loads of them lol,you have the gear to do those repairs easily ref the bottom of the shock onto the axel just weld a socker washer in place job done no need to mess around trying to make the hole perfect
That's great! Unfortunately my father in law used abused and neglected the old girl as a farm truck for 20 years so it never had any love. It was also a on a cattle farm, so the muck is even more corrosive. I genuinely love comments like this, because it never occurred to me to run the welder around, lathe it down and put a new thread on. Thanks for the idea.
@@MicallefMade i always think of repair before replace just the way my dad brought me up i fix everything and anything
@@MicallefMade wish i had a lathe lol i build my defenders on my drive putting m57 in mine soon, what kinda shot blasting gear you using?
@graham-martin5847 haha same, luckily there is an agricultural engineers workshop 4 minutes from home, and they let me use their kit if I need it. Nothing fancy, I use www.toolden.co.uk/p/sealey-sb997-shot-blaster-with-water-trap-wheels-37l/ for the chassis and outside stuff. And I use play sand as the media. It is a fraction of the cost and not harmful when it blows around. I sweet it up, sieve ot and put it back in. A slow process, but again it save a lot of money.
@graham-martin5847 an M57, gosh I can dream haha
Thanks for another really interesting episode. It's always a pain, when you uncover small details like the shock tower. But keeping a smile on the dial is the way to go. Cheers
Thank you for your comment, I am making good progress now, more to come soon hopefully
Great video. Man make fire. 🔥
I took the effort to replace the A frame axle ball joint from the bracket. Spare yourself an afternoon and a mangled up vice! Just buy the complete package: ball joint pressed in the bracket and replaced as a unit. For me it really wasn't worth the effort in relation to the savings
I think I will do the same, just change the lot for the sake of the hassle.
To remove the A arm upper bushes (and others) you can also drill like 12 holes all the way around, just through the rubber. Then you push out the inner steel sleeve and saw a slit in the outer sleeve.
I never thought of drilling them out, a little safer than fire
Hi Benjamin, Did literally the same restoration repair a couple of weeks ago myself. This was my recipe: new brackets. Patch up the outrigger. The latter was easily doable. The outrigger isn't really that complicated to partially refabricate yourself.
Thanks for the advice
I have an old 110 purchased from a farm. Some farmers tend to be very hard on them and don’t look after them. I guess the are just machinery though. Good luck with it.
Thank you, and good luck with yours. My father in law did no general maintenance. He only worked on it to get through its MOT. Otherwise, it was heavily abused.
Welcome Back, i like your videos🙌🏻
Thank you, I am hoping to get more done very soon.
Brilliant.
