Tanzania was a German colony that was taken off the Germans after the first world war and given to the British. The Germans and Austrians were making jewelry with this stone zoisite and they knew it was zoisite now known as tanzanite by Americans who don't like being corrected in history a bit like that 1812 to 1814 war with the British, but during the 1880s to the 1950s you can find details in various antique jewelry made by Austrians and Germans in books. And of it's rediscovered only by chance when a large stone was found in 1960s then on the mountain they found more. That large stone sold for 1 million dollars in a private auction in 2010s ish.
