Is it appropriation or appreciation? Also, if they do not know, are they really appropriating? One other argument: can we perhaps say that elements from all cultures travel, change, and/or evolve over time? I would also argue that the Romani people can do and wear whatever they want and whatever they wish. We have to stop living in fear, or worrying about the prejudices or opinions of others. For as many people that hate the Romani people, there are dozens more that love them.

As a Hungarian girl who's mother grew up in the 80-90ies, she told me about the Romani people who lived around Balaton lake, near Siófok. She told me how amazing those people were at creating music with just their fingers, without any instruments and how great they were at partying. Mother's grandmother was actually a Gipsy woman, and thanks to her bloodline, she was blessed with a genetics that granted her a naturally well darkening skin when she sunbathes, and she still looks amazing despite her age that's closer to her 50ies now. She could be mistaken with a Mediterranean woman if she spent enough time under the sun and nobody would suspect where her looks are from. She is a great dancer and without even knowing of her heritage, she could dance through the entire night without eating or drinking when she was a teenager, and was an amazing runner. Hearing some of the music in this video reminded me of her stories about the Hungarian Romani. I unfortunately look nothing like a Romanian person, I'm totally whitewashed thanks to dad's genes, but mum knows how an actual Gipsy partying looked.

I will agree that if you're going to live here in America, it will behoove you to at least attempt to learn English, since it is the main language most people here speak. It seems to me that if you at least attempt to learn English, it will help to get along better and succeed here Beyond that, if you wanna speak your mother tongue, that's fine with me. And, yes, I think it's cool if you try to learn one of the Native American languages. They are endangered, many of them, and I hate it when languages die out.

I'm thankful your channel exists to provide nuance. I hope to one day see many films & shows to depict real stories of real Romani people with the same level of depth that other people get.

I’m Romanian, and while this movie wasn’t my cup of tea, I applaud Egger for his research of my country and folklore. It’s so refreshing to see Romanian actors being cast, the clothing was accurate, props such as Romanian crosses and religious icons were used, obscure mythological figures like the solomonari(dark mages/warlocks) were featured, they did an homage to the Dacian culture(which is are ancestors to the Romanians) and they actually filmed in historical locations like the 15th century Corvini Castle in Hunedoara, which is one of the most beautiful castles in Europe. The locations weren’t depicted as in real life(as the scenery is CGI) but I understand this was mostly done for the atmosphere. One bone I have to pick with this movie was the Rromani representation( Rromani/ Rroma people are ethnically different from Romanians, that’s why I spelled it with a double r), because while the costuming and dances were accurate, I feel like the representation of their culture still falls into stereotypes, like having with the occult and the grotesque. Historically this group was both persecuted for this and constantly pushed by the media into this box(by making rromani characters fortune tellers and witches). They didn’t break this stereotype(I don’t think they wanted to, because it’s convenient to narrative and rooted in history), but they tried to be respectful: and that matters. The movie used the g*psy slur and the Romanian counterpart of that slur, ț*gani, but this was probably done to reflect the historical context. You can watch Florian.Florian’s take on this, he is a Romanian Rromani creator! Overall, I am grateful so much care and effort was put into representing these cultures, and I hope more producers and writers will follow their example!

Ask people in the United States/ Europe how they feel about Roma/Romani people. You see, they see Gypsy’s as nothing but pickpockets, scammers, thieves and criminals. They target wealthy people. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but it’s all over the world.

This is nothing to do with racism... OMG!!! People love to give their opinion when they don't know shi*. Manele is not exclusively "gypsie music" to make that clear for all the losers out there, it's just that any educated person runs away just hearing the words "manele" because it promotes bad taste, lack of talent, horrible lyrics, bad behaviors, superficiality, stupidity, and lack of education. It just mocks real art. If you don't know the genre, its history you don't have the right to spin this in a different light. A lot of these manele singers (gypsies or not) get in really big scandals. Months ago one was on the news for hitting a woman, they associate with shady "clans" that do illegal things (including harassing people in public places and stabbing them!!!!). In Europe not anyone can carry a gun randomly, but again some manelars were at a weting and started shooting their guns around for fun while being intoxicated!!! They literally do illegal things!!!!!!! This manele "genre" has a certain bad name because it earned it, and it promotes this bad behaviours, and everything is reflected in the music. They never speak properly (they butcher the language), the lyrics are superficial and misogynistic, some of them literally take foreign songs translate the lyrics and promote the song as their own. The ethnicity and skin color of the "manelars" is not important they are generally all viewed the same, so no this is not about racism. If one goes to a Heavy Metal concert, pays good money and has to listen to Back Street Boys (another completely different genre)... things would not be fun. Yes!!! People would be pissed!!!

@Florida. Florian I must say I admire your work that u do bringing justice awareness lessons and teachings of our history to ur audience and the world but something that l've long been confused or you could say angry about is how urslef I have noticed and many over Roma content creators (so not just urslef) is about the Roma that moved to the uk in the late 1500 hundreds it confuses me it almost seems like because we moved so long ago from mainland Europe and have bred with other ethnic backgrounds we don't seem to be as respected nor relevant nor deemed as real Roma bye the majority no we don't still all follow some roma traditions unfortunately but that doesn't mean it's not in our blood as much as urs but because we have taken on new traditions as the land around us has shaped and lead us to we are looked at as a bit of a embarrassment really but If you and many over Roma content creators would look into some of the amazing work and things Roma have did in the uk such as sports, business men,and still carrying on some Roma traditions till this day and way of living I think ur mind would be changed I have been blocked of a number of Roma content creators for saying things like this and it's really frustrating my family landed in the uk around the late 1700 in Scotland and there's actually a plaque in Scotland thanking the Roma that settled here for bringing there skilled craftsmanship among other things and actually making it a village to this day that was originally established bye the Roma coming to the uk I'd love to here from you on this topic in particular and just understand ur thoughts on this topic Kind regards @Florian

To discourage interracial identities in the early twentieth century, all Americans were often categorized as "white" or "colored," to decide if they were discriminated against or not... I'm sure this meant that all Roma were put in the "colored" category with Native Americans and Black people, discriminated against as a second class.

I often get asked, how did the Romani American population that has been in the United States since the early 1900s fare in the Jim Crow Era where all people deemed “Colored” especially African Americans were legally segregated, discriminated, and treated as third class citizens. While the Roma community was often sent back at Ellis Island due to racial profiling which characterized even rich Roma with a perfect record as “likely to become a public charge,” there was a considerable Roma community in certain areas and that meant local segregation did happen even with certain segregated Romani classes, and Roma being forced to live in non-white areas only.
