Gospel Seriously: The Dangerous Necessity of Goal-Driven Ministry
What are you aiming for in your ministry? How are you planning to reach these goals? What do you have to change to make it happen? Not just in your rhetoric, but in your action? Not just in your grand visions, but in your daily routines? What good but secondary things will you abandon for those goals? Will you be serious about it? Systematic? Sacrificial? Courageous? What skills do you need to learn to reach the goals?
This kind of thinking has gained much traction in various Christian ministry circles in Australia in recent years. For want of a better term, I’ll call it ‘goal-driven ministry’. It’s the kind of ministry thinking that tends to borrow heavily from the worldly wisdom of things like systems theory-inputs, processes, measurement, outputs-strategic planning, leadership, statistical analysis, quality control, business management, etc.
Because this goal matters so much, I want to issue two appeals to anyone involved in making decisions about gospel ministry (including myself):
Appeal #1: Engage in goal-driven ministry for the sake of the gospel of Christ crucified
Appeal #2: Constantly critique your goal-driven ministry by the gospel of Christ crucified
This is a video version of an article I’ve recently written in the Australian Church Record. It’s designed to help people involved in Christian ministry to think theologically and biblically about their ministry.

    I was surprised to see the descriptions of those he was addressing throughout chapter 2, as “free”. Free to receive grace, free to show grace. Flies in the face of how we might frame it… but there is no greater powerful, agency, freedom than to be able to win over those who might oppress you. And free to acknowledge the sovereign Lord cover them all.

    James is talking about a very shallow kind of faith - like we sometimes hear people say, "Well, I believe in God." But that's not the kind of faith Paul is talking about in Romans 4 (or Galatians or any other time Paul is talking about faith). That's the kind of faith James is talking about in James 2 in order that he can destroy the doctrine of faith righteousness. In other words, it's a straw man argument. (Straw man arguments are used all the time in debates. So it's a tactic meant to discredit the doctrine.) Paul is talking about what Abraham believed or more importantly WHO Abraham believed. He's talking about HOW Abraham believed. Remember that God had just promised that Abraham would have a son. Read the context of Genesis 15:6. That's when it was written: "And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness." And that became the cornerstone of Paul's gospel. He actually called it, "my gospel" in a number of places. We know that this theology - this gospel - was unique to Paul because we don't see it expressed ANYWHERE ELSE in the New Testament. The only other time it is cited is when James is trying to debunk it. So we know that this is the gospel according to Paul and Paul alone. Justification by faith is such an important and powerful doctrine that it single-handedly destroyed that great mother of harlots in the 1500s. But the opponents of this doctrine are still around in every church around the world. I had never heard what I just told you. I was shown this when I did a search for the pattern, "counted for righteousness" and "imputed righteousness". Nobody in the first century made note of this except Paul. So, when he calls this, "my gospel", you can take that to the bank. The only other mention of the doctrine is that valiant attempt to debunk it as a viable theology from someone who wanted to convert the world to Judaism.

    "By forgiving sins, God is counting us as righteous." Well, that MAY work under the New Covenant but what about Abraham? There was nothing in Genesis talking about God forgiving Abraham's sins. Abraham was still under sin even after he was justified. What justified Abraham? The conclusion that justification and forgiveness of sins being two sides of the same coin is handy but insufficient - as far as the doctrine of Romans 4 and the balance of Old Testament theology. If forgiveness of sins through justification was the path to take then that would kind of negate the book of Leviticus and most of the books of Exodus and Deuteronomy. The sacrificial system was designed around cleansing from sin and general uncleanness. That might have been rendered superfluous if it all could have been wrapped up in Genesis 15. Or so it seems to me.

    I've been through video #1 and I'm well into video #2. Are you two gents ever going to get around to discussing justification by faith?

  • @GizmoFromPizmo
    @GizmoFromPizmo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    In the U.S., courts don't ever declare anyone innocent. The only judgments are guilty or not guilty. Just a slight difference in the systems.

  • @GizmoFromPizmo
    @GizmoFromPizmo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The King James Version doesn't use the word "credited", it uses "counted" and "imputed" but it means the same thing, I'm sure. It should be pointed out that Paul says that the Law is what imputes sin to us, which is an oft overlooked point. He also calls it the "power of sin" in 1 Cor. 15. The doctrine of justification is intricate and wonderful because once you get it, you REALLY get it. Most never do, which is awesome. I've heard a lot of junk sermons in my day that attempt to resolve James 2 and Romans 4 but, tho many have tried, none have succeeded. There is no reconciliation of polar opposite theologies.

  • @GizmoFromPizmo
    @GizmoFromPizmo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Matthew 5:45 uses both words, "good" and "just". Matthew 5:45 (KJV) - That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. Evil and good are poetically the same as the unjust and the just. There is a moral ingredient or implication. The expression, "Doeth righteousness" is used in the New Testament. It has that meaning but that shouldn't hinder our understanding of the doctrine of justification by faith.

  • @GizmoFromPizmo
    @GizmoFromPizmo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Speaking out of turn, however. When discussing the judge who would justify the ungodly, all I have to say is, "Thank you, Jesus!" Rom. 4:5 - But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Let's not lose sight of the fact that nowhere is the verse in Genesis quoted, "Abraham believed God and it was counted to him for justification." The verse uses the word "righteousness" and then the whole discussion about justification springs from that. The words have the same meaning even though they are used by the same person at different times. The verse cited above uses both Justifieth and Righteousness and its talking about the exact same thing. In that verse, there's not even a SHADE of difference between them.

  • @GizmoFromPizmo
    @GizmoFromPizmo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    To me, we are encouraged to RIGHTLY divide the word of truth. Dividing where the word does not divide is not "rightly dividing" it. The Greek words are the same root word. See my following comment for several examples of the English and Greek words used in translations.

  • @GizmoFromPizmo
    @GizmoFromPizmo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like to explain the difference between justification and righteousness this way (and it doesn't take 2 long videos): Romans 1:17 (NIV) - For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed-a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The *righteous* will live by faith.” Romans 1:17 (KJV) - For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The *just* shall live by faith. Depending on the whim of the translator the Greek word could be translated "justification" or "righteousness". They are roughly the same words in the Greek and are used interchangeably. Righteousness = δικαιοσύνη Just = δίκαιος Justifying = δικαιοῦντα Justification = δικαίωσιν It's the same root word. It's is used in different translations in different places (as in the above example) to connote and define the same exact meaning. How do I explain the difference? Like this: There is no difference.

  • @GizmoFromPizmo

    The Apostle Paul probably didn't have a lot of Hebrew Old Testament to study from. Jesus and the Apostles, the Sanhedrin, the Scribes and Pharisees studied the Septuagint (LXX). When the New Testament quotes the Old Testament it quotes from the Septuagint and not from the Hebrew. That's why we can't find some of the prophecies cited in the New Testament in our current Old Testaments because we're not using the same source as was being used by Christ and the apostles. Today, we rely on the Masoretic Text, while in the first century all they knew about was the Greek Septuagint. I could cite a few passages but that would only belabor the point. Suffice it to say that the two sources are different and sometimes, substantially.
