Sound Walls - Making the Speech to Print Connection
มุมมอง 1.9K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Take a moment to think about this: we have 26 letters and 44 sounds that make up the English language. Print is not a 1- to - 1 correspondence, but we treat it as if it is when we post word walls in classrooms. There is a specific sound represented by the digraph sh but most word walls have words such as ‘she’ and ‘should’ posted under the letter ‘s’. By attending this webinar, you will be aske...

There is nothing original here. Even her diet joke was borrowed from another expert.
Wow!! Thank you for posting this!! Your comments about speech at the very beginning sounds just like my mother. I never realized my mother was dyslexic.
Great job, Sue! Great examples of broader concepts with the use of morphology and orthography. Additionally, I like that teachers can use what they are required to teach and do so in the ways that you presented.
Is it really World Knowlege or Word Knowlege?
Thank you!

The way I used notes in college was the sole purpose of passing multiple choice tests. From my text book and notes taking of the professor lectures, I would formulate question/answer flash cards. The strategy for studying for essay exams were much different. Essays are logical connections of the facts in a specific format directed by the teacher. I used a mnemonic picture graph to accomplish writing answers for writing exams. (Usually the college professor would give the class 10 questions and from those questions he/she would choice 3 questions. After I researched the questions, it was pretty obvious which questions would be asked.) For random facts; flash card study helped but was not perfect because random information is useless garbage information if it couldn't be applied to the subject area. So I quickly forgot it. I suck at Trivia Pursuit games and spelling word games such as Scrabble. But I excelled at Logic, Philosophy, and Apologies. I'm very good at behavioral analysis of student behavior and creating tangible solutions that involve student learning strategies in classroom environments. I forget thing very easily for example if I put my car keys in my backpack but put them in a different place in the backpack, I usually panic because to me I lost my keys because I forgot were I put them and can't find them!!!! Dyslexia sucks.
This would be so valuable if we could see the presentation.
This was so helpful ! thank you
Seems simple but this is one of the few times I have seen someone present their studies, the post tests, the long term results so clearly.
How is working memory a muscle? Working memory is a pretty consistent construct most research trying to increase working memory has failed. You can for similar items have chunking that will help but its transfer is limit to how that chunking can be used. People can be creative with this. So for instance the memory champion will used memorized marathon times to remember strings of numbers through chunking but if you give him something where that technique can't be used working memory goes back to its baseline.
I wonder if visual notetaking woodwork dysleixa
Some people find it very effective
How can I view the handout?
Damn first comment word. Us disabled people get taken advantage of more than anyone treated like trash without a thought about it
I am SO GLAD this is still here ;) :) :)
... having just had somebody ask on Reddit -- thinking about teaching middle/high school math w/ engineering background... worried about getting the concepts across :) :)
How many times does she say “right”?!!!! This is a great example of what NOT to do in a presentation,….. right???
I loved the webinar. The only suggestion I have is to please not turn back and forward in your chair.
Good resources, but I'm not a big fan of prescriptive pronunciation. If someone says "A" instead of "uh" for the article "a," who cares? Each has its place depending on context and I'm not about to correct a student on something so inconsequential.
I have taken Pete’s courses they are wonderful . My son was lucky enough to have Diana King and the wonderful teachers at Kildonan School without the O.G. Training my son would have been illiterate . Can’t thank Pete enough for what he continues to do to educate on this subject .
As a non native English speaker I had no idea you were making different sounds when you were saying "f f f - th th th"...
Sadly this information is very specific to the USA, and stops in the middle of the talk.
Very well done. Here for a class and found this very informative and plan to use the strings with wings.
Thank you for the info, I have never heard of a sound wall. Definitely have seen the benefit of using visuals around the classroom to help students.
Thank you for sharing! I enjoyed learning so much more about dyslexia. I will use this information when working with my students!
Could there be some FREE "Dyslexia_Friendly apps/"Assistive tech.""; for: "Africa's_dyslexics!!"??
at and it..working memory isnt this a phonemic awareness exercise />
Thank you so much for sharing. Such useful information and a valuable resource.
I have this disorder, I got a question how do you help someone like me?
Hello! Helping my friend brother with dyslexia, I gave him dyslexia sheets and had a book and told them to use the different colors and see what helped stabilize their reading and what didn’t. For them it was red that helped, blue second, and I think green third. You can find colored overlays on Amazon. After you get the color you want then you can get colored glasses from a place like Zenni that does colored lenses for glasses and use that to focus. Do touch typing to learn to type without having to even think about the keys or look at them as well and using audio books but having the text present and reading them as well to connect the information. Learning about how to help them with algebra as we speak! So when I find how to help then I’ll come back and speak on that part of dyslexia. Hope that helps
So they ended up having a hyper imaginative brain and so they could picture a red overlay in their brain and outside in real life from their brain and it helped them with reading. It’s a thing called hyperphantasia so I’ve been having him to mental exercises as well too get him comfortable using his creativity to help him in everyday life and he was doing good the first day but it gave him a headache so he’s resting but it has helped him read and do what he needs to. Hope this also helps!
Thank you for this information. I am learning so much more about Dyslexia, I know that I struggle with it but doing more research has been helping me. Thank you again. Jessie Granados
Thank you for posting this videa, this helps me understand these concepts so much better. It is so important to understand the breakdown of the parts of language and reading in order to help students with Dyslexia. Such an informative video, thank you.
Thanks for sharing! This is a great way for me to learn about dyslexia and how to help any future students with dyslexia.
Great presentation Full al meaningful activities All well connected Thanks Loli from Spain
Excellen Info in your presentation,so well explained and humorous Thanks Loli from Spain
I feel that this is such an important piece to work with Dyslexic students, thank you for the detailed lesson!
Thank you, good stuff!
I’ve watched this over and over again. Great presentation!!!
Is there somewhere we can go to resource the powerpoint?
This video was very insightful. Yes, I agree the humor kept me engaged and learning about the importance of education. “PEE” post, explain, expect is a great tool to keep us reminded on what not to do as a teacher.
Loved the strategies and presentation. The humor kept it engaging and enjoyable. I loved the "CARS" acronym. I took notes and will be trying to keep these strategies in mind when working with my students.
Thank you, IDA for sponsoring this talk.
Thank you for sharing this information. I found the sound wall to be a simple but highly valuable and easily applicable method to bringing, as you said, "the science of reading to the classroom." I think this will help my students greatly and will be an important addition to my classroom.
I am so happy for a channel like this. It is so helpful to be able to have a deep dive into reading and disabilities. We may know that a child struggles with reading, but it is also important to know why. The better we can understand our kids and their needs, the better we can meet their needs.
Thank you for this intro to sound walls! I am pretty unfamiliar and found the information very useful for my future classes. I especially like the quick breakdown of the parts of the brain where reading occurs.
Thanks for a great presentation! Your organization has been incredibly helpful to me in learning more about dyslexia and the different supports that are available. It is awesome to see different approaches being taken to ensure student success!
Terrific and concise look at introducing morphology.
Are their free tutors that help with note-taking for dyslexic students in university, college, and school? Thanks 👍
I wish she could go with me to every 504 meeting . Last year I had a vice principal state without ever meeting my son just by his grades state " well let's see which of these (referring to his accommodating) can we get rid off to make the list shorter since you're grades are good and I'm sure you don't need some of these. Hmmm I didn't bother arguing im just done with educators that don't educate themselves. You figure those accommodative are why he's succeeding. I don't really give up but it does get exhausting
