Vincent (Starry, Starry Night) by Don McLean (cover by Owen Ó Súilleabháin)
VINCENT (Starry, Starry Night)
Songwriter: Don McLean
Original Artist: Don McLean
Cover Artist: Owen Ó Súilleabháin
This song is one of the best examples of a songwriter's response to the work of a visual artist.
I remember the first time I heard this song. Maybe I was around six years old. My older cousin bought the single of the global hit song American Pie. Related in 1971 the song probably started to become popular in Ireland much later, perhaps when my old cousins was coming over age.
I found the cassette in our grandmothers house one day. I took down her old portable cassette player and turned the tape over to play the "B-Side" song, which was Vincent. It was a moment of sonic epiphany for me. It was the first time I became aware of the idea of 'songwriting'.
One of the things that stands out to me today is how McClean urges us not to see Van Gogh's work in its true light. He yearns for us to 'listen' to what he was trying tell us.
"Now I think I know,
What you tried to say to me...
They would not listen, they're not listening still
Perhaps they never will"

The Lake Isle of Innisfree
มุมมอง 2543 ปีที่แล้ว
Written by William Butler Yeats around 1888 as a young man in his early 20s. Later in life Yeats said of the poem: I still had the ambition, formed in Sligo in my teens, of living in imitation of Thoreau in Waldon Pond, on INNISHFREE, a little island in Lough Gill, and when walking through Fleet Street in London, very homesick, I hear a little tinkle of water and saw a fountain in a shop-window...

The basic setting is from Bud and Travis in the fifties. They were an American folk duo. You have done it full justice. I still like my setting though; I used Carolan’s Colonel John Irwin (AKA Planxty Irwin).

With you here in August '21 in Canada, and marvelling to think how fortunate to have found this nourishing, calming, cheering gathering of good folk, good music, good words and all just now. Little did ye know that the pandemic was coming, and that Eileen Mahoney's birthday concert in Oct '19 would come to have extra-meaningful resonance as time ticked along! Much comfort from you lot, and thanks indeed for every breath of it!

Dear, Dear Owen, Your musical setting is absolutely beautiful as is your soulful singing of it. After having read this poem many, many times over the years and walking the hills of Yeats and passing by boat, that tiny immortalized island of Innisfree, on Lough Gill in County Sligo and after naming my band after it, the essence of "Innisfree" has entered my "heart's core". Thank you so much for this added dimension of beauty.

Thank you for sharing this. W. B. Yeats recognizes the essence of Spirit in all as he is moved in the midst of busy London to sense the depths of Self and unity with all through Heart energy. Your musical composition is so beautiful. Again, thank you for putting your Heart energy out there. Mr. Yeats, I'm sure, is pleased.
