    I would *personally* consider “Give Me Jesus” to be more adoration or devotion. I am reminded of this bit of The Screwtape Letters which reads, “On the seemingly pious ground that “praise and communion with God is the true prayer”, humans can often be lured into direct disobedience to the Enemy who (in His usual flat, commonplace, uninteresting way) has definitely told them to pray for their daily bread and the recovery of their sick. You will, of course, conceal from him the fact that the prayer for daily bread, interpreted in a “spiritual sense”, is really just as crudely petitionary as it is in any other sense.” All that said, I agree. Every set should probably have *at least one* exaltation song.

    This was awesome, looking forward to it, just was listening to the podcast but I wanted to see the whole interview with video. I guess I’ll wait till later was just want to say that this so insightful. He’s speaking so much truth. I’ve been a paid and volunteer keys player/MD, and this topic is one of the best things, I love how he talked about being a son of the house, it’s not just about money, and having somebody that pastors you and a community to love on you is the much bigger blessing.

      Thank you so much for listening and watching. I’m so glad it helped and encouraged you! I believe others should talk about these real topics. Part 2 is coming out next week! And yes, being the son of the house is the BIGGEST thing-bigger than any of the music or logistics.

    And if it *does* "get old"... (particularly as someone who probably hears the songs *far* more than the typical congregant and recognizes that brains and bodies, by design, tend to be less and less impacted by familiar stimuli) just... y'know...get over it.

    Nice episode. Would you consider breaking down how to improve relative pitch and the ability to identify chord progressions for someone without perfect pitch.

    • @TheWorshipKeys
      @TheWorshipKeys 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the comment and for watching! Yes, that’s a great topic and one thing that this episode does not do a good job at clarifying. I’ll work on a future episode to talk through that process, because it can be overwhelming. In summary, best way to improve this ear training skill is to learn all your 12 major scales, know the Nashville # system (chords related to each scale degree), The Circle of 5ths, and then study chord progressions. When listening to music, we need to identify the key, the progression (which is often rooted in the bass), and then putting the melody on top. Best practice would be to just sit down at the piano, turn on recordings and start playing the music by ear. Force yourself to not look at sheet music or chord charts. Force your ear to trust itself and improve your music theory skills along the way. Once you have all your music theory knowledge, you use it as a tool kit for playing music by ear. 1) Identity key 2) Identify bass line 3) Complete the chords based on the base line 4) Identify full progression 5) Add melody

      @@TheWorshipKeys Thanks for the prompt reply. I appreciate your detailed response. I agree with everything you said. I started regular ear training around 2 years ago and have seen significant improvements. What I did notice was that practicing robotic intervals, random chord qualities or cadences etc. was never really musical and had rarely helped with figuring out the harmony of a real song. I am always wanting to improve this ability and it would be great to hear some more insight from a professional musician such as yourself. I would also like your take on solfege. Personally, I haven't gotten into it as I prefer to remember the sound/pitch within a key in relation to the tonic. I am just not convinced that it is necessary to learn, at least for my own goal which is to identify the chords of a song quickly. My aim is not to transcribe any right hand solos note for note etc which is not super relevant in worship piano which is primarily accompanying.

      🤣 hey! Music is music. It’s all about how it feels. Like Chris says, music is like a conversation. Whatever vocabulary or language needed for the conversation is what will be used, just like different tools and techniques used in CCM and Gospel. Shouldn’t be a point of tension, although sometimes it is, similar to how there are so many denominations with doctrine and theology battles. That’s for a different episode 😅 Thanks for the comment! I love both Gospel and CCM btw! I’ll have guests from all backgrounds and skillsets on the podcast. This week’s episode features a primarily soul and funk player, Ryan Prewett. He also plays for Billy Ray Cyrus and Cross Point Church in Nashville. I learn from every single guest each week! 🙏

    This touched my heart in ways that I didn't expect. Thank you. Please excuse my ignorance of religious litteracy but what material are you rearranging? I've only been to catholic church a few times in my youth and there was little/none music....and certainly not when the priest was talking. Am I confused if I hear Whitney Houston and James Taylor when hearing those chord progressions? I've studied music and arrangements at university in Montreal but, despite my education, this is still mysterious to me. Those 2/5 and tritone subs obviously were familliar but many of these modulations blind-sided me. Again thank you.

    Great points on the mono vs stereo discussion. It’s great to send a stereo feed so the engineer can use it however it fits the situation, but make sure to listen to all your patches summed to mono to make sure there are no issues! It amazes me how often there are phase issues, and I have to choose L or R instead of summing both to mono.
