    Beautiful colors and beautiful images! But these redds don't seem complete and the spawning doesn't seem very successful...

    • @stevenoakes7991
      @stevenoakes7991 ปีที่แล้ว

      Selection of the most photogenic clips from five or six weeks of spawning activity, over 200 redds at this location…all completed and 100 percent successful (at least in terms of the physical act itself). Numerous redd sites shown with a wide range of activity from excavation to fertilization events, egg eating etc. etc. Not easy to edit down thirty hours+ of 5k footage (over ??? number of days of filming) to four minutes and make it interesting for the average person…even if in this format the activity is out of context and in no particular order or sequence. Not meant or intended to show any individual redds or overall spawning activity from start to finish. Maybe I’ll do that one year but honestly it’s been done before and wouldn’t be as visually spectacular, actually would probably bore the crap out of most people. Some clips are of redd sites where spawning activity is almost finished while other clips show sites where it’s barely started, some sites half way through. Happy to answer any specific questions.

    Never seen that before what I can't believe is there eating the eggs. Unlike salmon brookies I noticed 2 males 1 on either side of the female both fertilizing eggs weird

    • @stevenoakes7991
      @stevenoakes7991 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eggs drifting outside of the redd have a very low chance of surviving and the fish won’t pass up the opportunity to gain some extra protein. The bulk of egg eating takes place during spawning events when large amounts of eggs are dislodged, occasionally when the female is excavating. Females often spin around quickly to eat eggs that are dislodged from their own redd during egg laying or excavation. Males compete to fertilize the eggs, often with a very small male sneaking in underneath the cluster of spawning activity, referred to as the precocious male.

Long story short, I was wading around a lake in BC that had amazing colors and came across some red kokanee spawning. I fumbled around with my gorpo for an hour trying to get a footage but it was complete junk and I ran out of space on the SD card. I totally need to get something going so next year I can also go get footage of one of the creek and giveaway the footage to the watershed society to promote their work and get engagement for their fund raisers and volunteers program. I listened to this song on vinyl practically non-stop in 1976 for 6 months following the birth of my still born little boy crying my eyes out, hiding in my house.. Then for the next half a year I think I listened to it halftime. I had found out I had an infertility disorder right after that pregnancy ... Then my OBGYN told me it had been long enough for all that. I said okay, went back to school and work, I had surgery on my ovaries, we applied for adoption, and then suddenly I was going to practically have two daughters at once. Well, that baby of mine also died as did I and now I just have my adopted daughter but you know what? That was 50 years ago, turned out my husband was the worst snake in the grass and I believe I'm much relieved that I didn't have to look at and raise that man's child who would have been carrying around some of his evil genes. Thanks for all your help Van! Don't know how I would have gotten through all that without this amazing otherworldly song of yours.

    • @stevenoakes7991
      @stevenoakes7991 ปีที่แล้ว

      Luke, if you look up Redside dace Ontario distribution you will find maps that show where they are found. Being an endangered species in Ontario they are found in very few places now. They have specific habitat requirements that include a stream width of usually not more than 10 metres. They are not pollution tolerant and disappeared from most urban tributaries of Lake Ontario a long time ago.

    • @lukejmorrison
      @lukejmorrison ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevenoakes7991 very cool. Do they live their whole lives in these streams? I'm guessing that they spawn in these streams? I'd love to figure out if one could help propagate them in aquariums to help reintroduce them to streams. I'm guessing that most of these streams are cooler waters? I see that there is some inatiteve to rebuild the foliage on the edges of streams to help the Redside rebuild it's population.

    I asked if some of those trout were Browns because they would not be native trout and unless they were stocked at that size they have certainly flourished - so are some of those beauties Browns?

    • @stevenoakes7991
      @stevenoakes7991 ปีที่แล้ว

      My apologies for missing your comment Doug. All of the fish are brown trout, all of them are wild originating from wild German fingerlings stocked in 1930. Some stocking was done in the sixties but not since 65, the stocking done at that time was for a put and take fishery in places where they would not have survived for vey long. The fish that persisted were no doubt from the original 1930’s stocking…why they all look so different. Thanks for watching.

    • @mcdoug6
      @mcdoug6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevenoakes7991 Were they stocked in a stream that was previously inhabited by brookies? I've fished Downeast Maine for about 40 years and most of the streams and rivers have native brookies, but the habitat is marginal due to a lack of cold water during the summer months. There aren't many mountains in the area and most of the cold water is due to seepage of cool springs in very limited areas. I often wondered if brown trout were introduced to the watershed whether they might flourish in places where brookies struggle. The fish in your video are obviously flourishing. Thanks for the reply

    • @stevenoakes7991
      @stevenoakes7991 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mcdoug6 Brown and brook trout have an interesting history in this watershed. For their entire history they have had a competitive coexistence. Up until the last fifteen or twenty years brook trout actually dominated and outnumbered brown trout by 20 or 30 to 1. In recent time they have been blamed for brook trout declines in the watershed when in fact their numbers have declined at almost the same rate as brook trout. In the same time period an aggressive stocking program of non native strain Atlantic salmon (salar not sebago) as well as large numbers of rainbow escaping from in-line ponds have changed the population dynamics rather dramatically. No doubt that average stream temperatures are rising but the upper watershed has tremendous groundwater resources and I don’t believe the true impact of climate change has come yet. Wild fish populations are in my opinion easily put out of balance when large scale stocking programs persist over a period of years.
