I'm PG Tye Botting, and I'm here to help you get more out of your love for Filipino Martial Arts (FMA), especially Modern Arnis and related arts like Kombatan and Balintawak. I also occasionally share tidbits from my background in kung fu and other arts.
Who am I? Just a lifelong martial arts student of over 40 years who also enjoys teaching to keep learning. I started training FMA in 1991, eventually joining Modern Arnis in 1992 under Guro Eric Alexander. About a year later I became a direct student of Prof. Remy Presas, following him all over Texas until his untimely passing, and I have continued Modern Arnis ever since. Even earlier, from 1982 onwards I have been training and teaching Northern Shaolin / Northern Praying Mantis kung fu. Full web-bio: www.kungfu.cc/instr.shtml
My content goal here is high-density training information with no ego, no posturing, and plenty of details to help you train and grow.

Modern Arnis Seminar Snippets: 14 Count Sumbrada for Kids
This seminar snippet is a fun, short walkthrough of one half of a 14 Count Sumbrada I developed with Abel Martinez back in the 1990s based on our Modern Arnis training at the time. It has some elements of distance and cane management, as well as broken rhythms. Using Remy's 12 basic strikes, the sequence is 3-8-9-2-5-12-12, alternating each person. We normally do it with more live hand action and movement but it was still new to my son here. To do the whole drill just repeat the same movements on the other side - I would do my son's moves shown, and he would do mine.
This excerpt was me working with my son Conal as part of the kids' training during our Springfield Arnis Training back in January 2015 - he was 9 years old back then. ;-)

Modern Arnis JOT 12: Twin Finger Throw
มุมมอง 3.1K2 ปีที่แล้ว
This Modern Arnis JOT is about a twin finger reverse alternative version to our common backwards throw or outside wrist lock. It has a similar aim vector, but instead of a bent wrist uses a flexed wrist with force going through the last two fingers. Thanks once again to Guro Larry for helping me show how to train it. In application, you can get to it from various other locks, holds, and release...
Modern Arnis JOT 11: Roof Blocks
มุมมอง 2K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Our first-ever Guest JOT is about roof blocks, thanks to PG Craig Mason. Roof blocks (aka Umbrella or Kasilagang) are quite common in FMA but there are some important considerations with respect to timing, power, and distance. PG Craig walks us through a few of the more important aspects and their implications with the help of Guro Larry Thompson. Some bottom lines: put power into the motion, c...
Modern Arnis JOT 10: Finger Lock Trading Drill
มุมมอง 1.9K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Our Modern Arnis JOT today is a simple drill you can use at the end of a warmup and to develop sensitivity and control for finger locks. Just One Thing (JOT) here is the Finger Lock Trading Drill (or Finger Lock Drill), in which you take turns executing finger hyper extension locks (nicely! and don't forget to tap!), with all fingers and thumbs as possible targets. Hook the digit, control the b...
Modern Arnis Seminar Snippets: Strike and Disarm in One Motion
มุมมอง 3.3K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Another Modern Arnis seminar snippet, this one involves the concept of engineering positioning and control that results in a powerful strike accomplishing a disarm at the same time. This is more about understanding how movements and power generation can be linked together for multiple purposes at once rather than showing an actual technique, but you might be surprised at how opportunistically t...
Modern Arnis JOT #9: Abaniko Double Action
มุมมอง 2K2 ปีที่แล้ว
This Modern Arnis JOT (Just One Thing) is another favorite of Professor Presas' - Abaniko Double Action. It's a few-count series of moves based around abaniko (fanning) mechanics, mainly for skill development and flow, like an amara. PG Tye Botting shows the two most common ways of doing it (low and high) and shows some range and targeting variations to make it your own. A nice multi-strike com...
Modern Arnis JOT #8: Body-Stick Lever
มุมมอง 1.3K2 ปีที่แล้ว
A favorite of Professor Remy Presas, this JOT (Just One Thing) is a basic technique from Modern Arnis, the Body-Stick Lever, Cane-Bicep Throw, or Cane-Body Armbar. In never really had a name, just "do this!" PG Tye Botting shows three ways to employ the same basic leverage: inside to the bicep, outside to the elbow, and between the thighs. Modern Arnis JOTs are very short videos about a single ...
Modern Arnis JOT #7: Pass-Through Drill
มุมมอง 1.3K2 ปีที่แล้ว
This JOT (Just One Thing) is a beginner's drill from Modern Arnis, designed to quickly develop flow, timing, distance, deflections, and accuracy. PG Tye Botting quickly walks through beginning single and double stick versions and shows you basic ways to mix it up and get more out of this classic drill. Modern Arnis JOTs are very short videos about a single idea, move, tweak, or principle. Let u...
Modern Arnis Seminar Snippets: Shoulder Spear
มุมมอง 2.4K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This seminar snippet sets up a way to train one of my favorite opportunistic inserts in Modern Arnis or any art - hitting them with their own shoulder, like a battering ram. It doesn't have to be from this motion only; it could be from an arm bar, after a grab release, as part of an offensive grab or defensive pull - basically any time you get a straight arm and have control to keep it straight...
Modern Arnis JOT #6: Hand Sparring
มุมมอง 2.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Another sparring-focused JOT (Just One Thing) from Modern Arnis, this one is a basic sparring drill dealing with attacks to your hand by attacking the attack. PG Tye Botting quickly walks through range and evasion considerations and then shows how attacking the hand they essentially gave you automatically moves your hand out of the line of fire at the same time. Turnabout is fair play! Modern A...
Modern Arnis JOT #5: Basic Sparring Drill - Following
มุมมอง 2.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this JOT (Just One Thing) from Modern Arnis, PG Tye Botting shows a basic sparring drill to train striking during an opponent's windup or followthrough. Imagine a string attached to the tip of both sticks such that when they wind up, they also pull your stick towards them. We call this the following drill or attack the draw. First it is done statically just with the feeder winding up, then a...
Modern Arnis basics 19: trapping hands intro
มุมมอง 29K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Trapping hands is a core drill in Modern Arnis. This video is a basic intro to trapping hands to get you started in the flow and then begin to modify targets, change roles, insert techniques, and add pressure to challenge the drill. Many styles have versions of this drill, also known as kadena de mano, or de kadena. Changes can either keep or break the flow, and trapping hands can be a great ve...
Modern Arnis Seminar Snippets: Simultaneous Action
มุมมอง 1.5K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This seminar snippet shows how you can use simultaneous action in Modern Arnis tapi-tapi (or Balintawak too). The key is that each individual attack matters and should go for full intent, but even while you're executing one attack you're managing and controlling while gearing for multiple followup attacks. This kind of exchange is an example of the kind of chess-like setups that Prof. Presas wo...
Modern Arnis Seminar Snippets: Thoughts on Sinawali Exploration
มุมมอง 6093 ปีที่แล้ว
This modern arnis seminar snippet is a short discussion about exploration of your sinawalis with insertions, blending, deconstructing, and more. To illustrate or punctuate these thoughts I show some brief examples in the air but this not actually a training video. This is from some camp final thoughts at the 2014 Summer Stick Slam run by my friend GM Bruce Chiu of Arnis International - fun camp...
Modern Arnis Seminar Snippets: Tapi-Tapi Trapping, Training Flow
มุมมอง 1.5K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Some modern arnis seminar teaching snippets working a training flow walk through for Tapi-Tapi trapping from the 2014 Summer Stick Slam run by my friend GM Bruce Chiu of Arnis International. I shared this with my partner in the video as a training aid for him to work these concepts - we're not going fast or demo-ing by any means. And it's important to note that this is more about position recog...

Excellent presentation and flow, thank you Tye and Mosi!🙏🏾😼
much appreciated
Thanks for watching! Hoping to get back to releasing more new content later this year, too. 👍
Try doing a Rumpida or Redonda after strike one. Much faster and more practical than empty hands. Offense is the best defense.
This is why I like TH-cam
👏👏👏👍
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for your clear demo.
Glad you liked it and thanks for dropping by and checking it out!
Dude your arms are shredded. You must put in work with those sticks. Kudos to you because you look like a senior like me
;-) Thank you sir, yep about 55 yrs old when I did that, now 58 - just gotta keep going, keep pushing, and do the work! Thanks for dropping by and keep on training and best of luck!
wow
Thanks! I’m a Balintawak guy working on my amarra. This gave me some ideas!
Perfect, thank you sir - that's all I was trying to stimulate; just some basic ideas to get the juices going. Everyone will have the best way forward from there for their own particular styles. 👍
Excellent, thank you
Thank you sir - for watching and for commenting!
damn that veins bro
thank you very much!
Nice...trapping always reminds me of Bruce Lee.
Thank you sir!
thanks for sharing your knowledge. I am new to (watching only :D) arnis. it appears to me that much depends on the arm muscles and the wrist joint strength. any special excercises to develop the strength required? or regular drills will build required strength over years? thanks in advance
Hi Subhash! While there is a certain amount of wrist and arm strength that aids the tenchiques, it's really just to be sure the transfer of one's whole-body strength works correctly. I do have some strength exercises along the lines you're asking about in the 8th video: th-cam.com/video/PhJGRypuUX8/w-d-xo.html , here. Hope this helps!
Excellent Techniques, thank You for sharing this kind of ARTS From Philippines which applicable to all ages and Gender. God bless us.
Maraming salamat Ser! Thanks for watching and for your kind comments. All the best to you and yours!
Nice 👍
Thanks for watching!
awesome !
Thank you! Cheers!
Great videos , thank you
Glad you like them and thanks for watching!
This is a awesome video, would love to see some videos building off this, such as de ca dena with inserts, such as serpents kiss ex.
Thanks Zach! Yep, after the big camp is over I'll get back into making these longer videos and one of them will be a continuation of this and include inserts , change-ups, alterations, and crossovers. 🙃
@@tyeskf awesome ! Cannot wait sir !
Uoss! Sensie watching from Philippines 👍🥰
Hello there! Thanks for watching! Maraming salamat
Nice. Thanks as always for sharing.
You bet my friend! Thanks for watching!
As a Filipino m. A. I would just like a little correction. The word for push is TULAK not TULOK. Otherwise an excellent at is tutorial
Yep, thanks that was a typo on my part.
An alternative process, we used an outside hammer fist when drilling as the outside partner; back fist for the inside partner.
Yep, tons of alternate feeds for sure, thanks!
Nice work man
Appreciate it - thanks!
Very nice drill sir. Thank you
Most welcome of course and thanks!
wonderful
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you from this wonderful video, very detailed and clear! greeting from the Philippines ^_^
Thanks for watching and very glad you enjoyed it! Pugay
No es real... El bastón no se para... Es imposible hacer eso... Un bastón se mueve a más de 300kh..
If I understand you correctly and that your comment is meant to be general about the whole idea of blocking and controlling, then it depends on how they're striking and how one positions oneself relative to that and their timing, really. For a hit "at" or "in" and not "through", then one can jam their strike with one's block (hence the term, and noting that the blocking stick should be moving with similar speed), and go from there. But, if you have a specific time-marker I would be happy to discuss more. Thanks for viewing and commenting in any case.

? I'm not getting the reference, but I do appreciate you taking a look - thanks!
Still miss you FMA brother!
Thanks again to Guro Larry Thompson for volunteering to be the demo dummy for this! Hope to see him on more JOTs in the future. If you're ever in or near Durango, CO, don't forget to drop him a line to visit or train. 👍
Very happy and honored to get PG Craig to do a guest JOT for our first such spot! Looking forward to him sharing more material on TH-cam in the future. Don't forget to check out his TH-cam channel: Craig Mason
thank you very much!
Thanks for viewing and for the encouragement!
@@tyeskf I'm gonna follow your videos from the beginning very good quality, sir!
Love the emphasis on mechanics! Just how the local GMs here do it! More power to modern arnis!
Thank you sir - yep, mechanics are the gasoline for whatever you're trying to do! 👍
I had a lot of survival fights with my bully way back in high school and had never encountered that kind of punching style with all of them. As far as I can remember is that whenever they throw a punch at me I'll just dodge it and throw a devastating punch to their liver because that's my favorite spot.
Yep, that's why this is a drill and not a technique, as I said from the beginning. That said, you can often do this kind of thing against a grab attempt (like the grab-to-hold-and-hit) and such. You can also think of the first move as a kind of assisted dodge - and there are 2-count and 1-count variations as well.
good work
Thank you! Cheers!
I always carry two sticks everywhere I go. Just in case I get attacked by a Liberal or a Trump supporter. One stick for each faction.
Heheh, never know when you might have to just pick up any ol' thing...
I like the second one a lot.
Yep, it is a good flow and comes up a lot, 👍
Thank-you sir
Once again, I really appreciate you checking these out and also posting feedback - thank you! Is there anything you'd particularly like to see in an upcoming JOT?
Very good video
Thank you sir! Definitely appreciate it!
Thank you for sharing
Thanks again for watching, Neal!
Nice! I like the JOT format.
Glad you like it! Thanks much!
Thank you Sir for sharing!
Thanks much - my pleasure!
Great material, as always!
Thank you sir! Would love to have you out here sometime!

Lol, thanks! 🤙
Nice, thank you...
Welcome 😊 and thanks for watching!
Thank you very much
Happy to share, just glad if folks find some value in these basics and snippets. 👍
nice drill
Thanks 👍
Can I do “Bing” instead of “Shoom”??…🤣
Absolutely - I should have mixed them up "ping" "bang" "pow" ;-)
