Can We Get It To Run After 40 Years. 1948 REO Truck. Part 4
In part 4 we take a look at the engine now that it’s out of the truck. We get the oil pan off after making a major mess and then finally get it to turn over. We end up with two broken valves that we’ll have to replace.

This is the third video in which we are working on fixing this 1948 REO truck that had been sitting in a pasture for around 40 years. In this video we get the top of the transmission back on it and then pull off the radiator. We then decide that it would be best to go ahead and pull out the engine. Sure! When the oil pan was on you were pulling against a vacuum created by not opening and closing the valves for so many years. This condition was a product of the transverse Coriolis effect from sitting facing north while the moon and stars moved overhead for decades. It's just as well you didn't try to drain the oil as you may have suffered an explosive implosion and had oil all over the shop, ceiling, walls, everything including yourself. Don't even try to understand it. This is advanced physics.

    I’ve got the identical truck that I’m in the process of restoring. My engine was free but needs a rebuild. Hardest thing to source so far has been the engine bearings. Point of reference, your truck has a generator, not an alternator. Alternators didn’t become common until to 60s. I’m really impressed to see your interest in getting this old truck going! I’m watching every episode. Best of luck!!

      Thanks for the information about the generator. I hadn’t realized that. I have a IH 400 that also has a generator and not an alternator, so I should have known that. I’m also a little concerned about how hard it’s going to be to source parts that I’ll need.

    Good decision on taking the engine out and taking it apart. I see so many videos on TH-cam where people take an old stuck engine and hammer and jerk on it to get it unstuck. Sometimes it works out okay but you risk breaking rings, piston and valves, bending push rods, and doing other internal damage. That's all good an fine if you really don't care about the engine and just creating content. But if you plan to use that engine you did the smart thing. In the case of a REO I would imagine getting engine parts is difficult if not impossible. And yeah even taking an engine apart doesn't guarantee you won't break something but it's a much safer option.With all that said that truck's a great candidate for a Cummins if you're rich💲💲. Look forward to seeing more.

    You have to wonder why they didn't use a starting engine like (Caterpillar/John Deere) used? Alot better system, using a starting engine. Too many moving parts in the IH system to keep in order. I've seen rebuild videos on the IH system, very complicated, they suggest you shut off the tractor on the gas system? Diesel runs on (Heat/Compression) I wouldn't want to put gas in a hot system like that on a hot motor, cracking pistons.

    • @JonathanS78
      @JonathanS78 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I thought this was an interesting question and so I did some research on it. Kinda interesting. I might do a short video about this. IH decided to not use a pony motor (starting engine as you called it) because they wanted it to be crank startable. The issue with pony motors is that you can’t crank start them. IH wanted something that could be reliably started in any conditions. As far as stopping on gas. It wasn’t as much of an issue with cracking pistons as cracking heads. You want to let it cool down on the diesel by letting it run at an idle for a while if you have been working it hard in the heat before you turn it off. Thanks for the comment and for watching the video.

      There is what they call a Super MD-TA. It’s the gas start diesel version of a Super M-TA. That’s probably what he had. These gas start diesel engines were used in a lot more tractors than just the 400s. They even used them in bulldozers for quite a while.
