SOFT MACHINE - Moon in June ["BBC Peel Sessions" version - about 1970 (maybe June '69)]
I can still remember
The last time we played on Top Gear
And though each little song
Was less than three minutes long
Mike squeezed a solo in... somehow
And although we like our longer tunes
It seemed polite to cut them down
To little bits - they might be hits
Who gives an... after all?
Tell me how would you feel
In the place of John Peel?
You just can't please
All of the musicians all the time
Playing now is lovely
Here in the BBC
We're free to play almost as long and as loud
As a jazz group, or an orchestra on Radio Three
There are dancehalls and theatres
With acoustics worse than here
Not forgetting the extra facilities
Such as the tea machine, just along the corridor
So to all our mates like Kevin,
Caravan, the old Pink Floyd
Allow me to recommend 'Top Gear'
Despite its extraordinary name
Yes, playing, playing now is lovely
Here in the BBC
We're free to play almost as long and as loud
As the foreign language classes... and the John Cage interview...
And the jazz groups... and the orchestras on Radio 3
Pop stars drink each others' wine
Plough each others' earth
Hoping for companionship
And then perhaps rebirth
Plant seeds in fresher plots of earth
Bound up in concepts and dreams
And fears of worse things to come
They never do
They stay the same
Music-making still
Performs a normal function
Background noise for people
Eating and talking and drinking and smoking
That's all right by us
Don't think that we're complaining
After all it's only leisure time, isn't it?
I could almost sing this song
In a nice tone of voice
If I had to, I'd be glad to
It's awfully nice to be here
So let's open the beers and get tipsy
We'd be mad to
But if you sound refined
You just can't blow the mind of a kiddy
Or a young lady
And if you come from the sun
You just can't fool a mum into thinking
That you're alright, really
So before this feeling dies
Remember, I could be telling lies
Now, I love your eyes
See how the time flies
I think it's so great
You seem to change your fate
By working and playing
Something new in every way
Can be yours in a day
But I wonder what I'm really saying
So just before this feeling dies
Remember I may be telling lies
Falsehoods
White lies
Adverts
Idle chat
Banter
Half-truths
Rumours
And just lies, plain lies...
I shan't say.
One more word...
So instead... I'll play drums...

Rare and excellent rearranged version of a composition of Karl Jenkins, "Pavan", taken from the album "Rubber Riff" recorded in April 1976 but released in 1994. This is beautiful. Is Sergei Solovyov a violinist? The music sounds the same as Karl Jenkins' "Pavan" but this version has a violin. What album is this from? I tried to Google Sergei Solovyov to find out more about him, but I only found a film maker so I'm not sure if it's the same guy.

You definitely did! I have a cassette recording of most of this taken from a John Peel show in 1981. The track is so long that the tape ran out before the end, so cutting off John's inevitable comments, leaving me unable to name it. The advent of lyrics search 2 decades later finally solved the mystery. A real masterpiece.

Thousand Island Park is an amazing and magical place on the Southwestern corner of Wellesley Island in the Thousand Islands. It is a late nineteenth century Chautauqua-like community of 315 ginger bread cottages so impressive that it has landed on the National Register of Historic Places. I first stumbled upon this place in the early 80's and I was immediately taken aback by it's incredible beauty and charm. I've been back nearly every year since. But wait... there is a big problem. A vexing question that I needed answered. A question I wondered about for years. "Thousand Island Park" is also a piece of music. But not just any piece of music. It was composed and played by John McLaughlin, one of my all-time favorite jazz musicians and his groundbreaking jazz fusion group called Mahavishnu Orchestra, who recorded this piece on their 1972 album 'Birds of Fire'. Was there a connection, I wondered? John McLaughlin is an Englishman born in Yorkshire England in 1942 - a long way from Thousand Island Park. Was that piece of music named after the same place I loved so much in the Thousand Islands? Eventually, curiosity got the best of me (along with a bout of insomnia one night). And so I started researching it on the web very intently. At first, I could find nothing. But I was persistent. And then, I found my first clue. In a 1999 interview, Mclaughlin talked about how he became interested in Indian thought and philosophy and it's influence on his music: "I became very interested in comparative religion around 1962 when I was 20. I was raised without any religious education whatsoever. I became a member of the Theosophical Society because they had a wonderful library. On discovery of the wonder and profundity of Indian thought and philosophy, my appetite was really whetted. I became aware of Ramana Maharshi, a man who had a strong impact and continues to exert quite an influence on me. I went on to become aware of Ramakrishna, Vivekananda, Premananda and Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj. My discovery of Indian music was also quite a revelation. I was first struck by the beauty of it and the mastery of the improvisation that exists in both the North and South. The relevance of this to my music, which is jazz music, was great-the necessity of mastering this kind of discipline for improvisation." It turns out that the Swami Vivekananda who McLaughlin mentions above, lived at Thousand Island Park for seven weeks in July in 1895. According to a Thousand Island Park Landmark Society brochure: "Swami Vivekananda’s arrival at the Main Dock of Thousand Island Park a century ago, on June 18, 1895, was the result of a convergence of events that would have a lasting effect on millions of people, both here and abroad. He came to the Park at the invitation of Miss Mary Elizabeth Dutcher, an artist and cottage owner who had attended his spiritual classes in New York City and was struck by his strength of purpose ( he landed at the same dock pictured above). Swami said that he was "at his best’’ at Thousand Island Park. The ideas he refined and expressed there grew, during the years that followed, into institutions both in India and elsewhere. So this must have been the connection. John McLaughlin must have been inspired enough by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda to visit Thousand Island Park to meditate on the very same rocks where the Swami once meditated. And he must have further inspired by this experience such that he composed "Thousand Island Park." Only thing left to do was get confirmation of my hypothesis. Through much poking around McLaughlin fan sites and numerous posts, I finally came into possession of McLaughlin's email address. I sent him an email asking him if I was correct and much to my surprise he answered me back. He is a man of few words, but basically indicated that I was in fact correct in my assumptions. Mystery solved! You would probably have to be a rabid McLaughlin fan to really appreciate this story.
